Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

All good things come to an end. Sadly it is time for us to relinquish two

precious, phenomenal priests.

Most of us laity dedicate our lives to our immediate family, making whatever sacrifices are necessary.

No sacrifice for them is beyond consideration by us. But being able to expand their notion of immediate family

to envelope an entire church community, as our priests have, is extraordinary! There is certainly something Divine in it. And as members of this wider community we must

count them as blessings in our lives.

How fortunate Saint James parish has been to have all three priests assigned to it so truly Pro-Life! Their

support for the Sanctity of Life is open and unfailing. Our Respect Life Committee is deeply grateful.

We pray that the same good God who gave us our

outstanding departing Pastor and Associate Pastor will continue to favor us in this way. Our consolation in this

regard is that we get to keep, alas, only for a time, Father Kirby Rust our young Associate Pastor

of towering intellect.

Of all three, who can observe their profound reverence during the Celebration of the Eucharist without deeply

embracing the miracle of the fact that what was elevated as mere bread and wine is returned to the altar as the

Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Their attention to detail, adherence to Orthodoxy, respect for Tradition and steadfastness is contagious.

“Without Steadiness or Perseverance no Virtue can long subsist; and however honest and well-meaning a Man’s

Principles May be, the Want of this is sufficient to render them ineffectual, and useless to himself or others.

—Benjamin Franklin “On Constancy” in the Pennsylvania Gazette

April 4, 1734

Not so in their case. Not so.

Their embrace of Franklin’s assertion is palpable.

So, fare thee well Fathers Martin and Scott. We will sorely miss you. Know that our lives have been

positively changed by knowing and following you. And that to you we will be forever grateful.

May the peace of the Lord be with you always!

FAREWELL TO FATHER MARTIN

AND FATHER SCOTT You have served the Lord with gladness –

tirelessly, faithfully, and with great compassion for his flock.

Now as the day dawns on the next chapter of your life,

may God continue to richly bless you and watch over you,

may the God of peace grant you peace now and always.

We have been so blessed at Saint James to have had a caring shepherd in Father Martin who has

worked tirelessly to not only move us closer and closer to God, but to “get us to heaven”.

We will miss you dearly and appreciate all you have done for our parish as whole as well as the

support you have shown individual parishioners throughout their personal faith journey.

Although our time with Father Scott has been short, he was a breath of fresh air for our parish at the

perfect time. We appreciate your constant challenge to be Christ-like. We feel fortunate to be the first

parish experience and wish you well as you take on the role as Pastor at St. Edward.

Wishing you both well…until we meet again!

What is Apollos, after all, and what is Paul? Ministers through whom

you became believers, just as the Lord assigned each one.

I planted, Apollos watered, but God caused the growth.

-- 1 Corinthians 3: 5,6

Dear Family of Faith:

As I prepare for my last Sunday and departure as your pastor on the Feast of Saint James, Apostle, the verses from Saint Paul's Letter to the Corinthians come to mind in a prayerful, reflective, and conscious way. The six-years that I have served as your pastor have been the source of many blessings and graces. I am grateful.

I may have planted an idea, thought, or brought a truth to light along the way, all the while conscious that many others helped to water your growth in faith and holiness. Nonetheless, it was God who caused the growth. And that will always be true. I came among you simply to be obedient to what the Lord assigned me to do. I am satisfied that I likely accomplished the mission in excellent ways, and I am repentant that I may have missed the mark too frequently. For the former, I owe any excellence to the grace of God. For the latter, I beg your forgiveness for however I might have failed you.

I shared with you my first Sunday in 2014 that my job is to help you get to Heaven. I surely hope that you feel at least a step or two closer to getting there! And I reminded you frequently that our life together was simply about our relationship with Christ; our relationship with one another, and how we bring Christ to others. Our simple, beautiful way of life in Christ will not change in the years ahead. As you continue the pilgrimage of faith, please know that I admire you and my affection for you runs deep and wide. I have often said that I so appreciated referring to our home in Hardin County as "the Heartland of Kentucky." I will carry you in my heart for as long as the Lord gives me in this world.

Please pray for me. I will pray for you. Saint James the Greater, pray for us.

God bless you and keep you now and forever,

First Reading: Isaiah 55:1-3

Second Reading: Romans 8:35, 37-39

Gospel: Matthew 14:13-21

When Solomon asked for an understanding heart to lead his people, he must have known that it was the one gift that opened the door to every other gift. For wisdom (prudence) is the virtue that guides all other virtues, and grounds judgment. The wise seek God,

and those who know him seek to know him more, as Solomon, and the parables, demonstrate.
