Terminal Learning Objective

Task: Use Visual Signaling Techniques071-326-0608

Conditions: Given a requirement to use visual signals while mounted.

Standards: Give the proper procedures for each required action.


Performance Steps

1. Ensure the Soldiers you are signaling can see you.

2.Perform the visual signals for combat formations, battle drills, and movement techniques as follows:

a. Perform formation signals coil and herringbone:


Raise one arm above the head and

rotate it in a small circle.


Extend the arms parallel to the ground. Bend the arms until the forearms are perpendicular. Repeat.

b. Contact left, contact right, action right, action left, action front (right, left, or rear), air attack, and nuclear, biological, or chemical attack:


Extend the LEFT arm parallel to the ground, bend the arm until the

forearm is perpendicular. Repeat.

CONTACT LEFT

CONTACT RIGHT

Extend your RIGHT arm parallel to the ground, bend the arm until the forearm is perpendicular. Repeat.


Extend both arms parallel. Raise your RIGHT arm until

it is overhead. Repeat.

Action Left Action Right

Extend both arms parallel. Raise your LEFT arm until it

is overhead. Repeat.


Action Front (LEFT, RIGHT OR REAR), FIGHT ON FOOT,

OR ASSAULT FIRE (DISMOUNTED TROOPS).


Bend the arms with forearms at 45-degree angle. The forearms are crossed. Repeat.

AIR ATTACK


NUCLEAR, BIOLOGICAL, OR CHEMICAL ATTACK



c. Perform the following movement technique signals:1.Traveling2.Traveling Over-watch 3. Bounding Over-watch




Extend one arm to a 45-degree angle. Bend the arm and tap the helmet. Repeat.

Extend arm to the right and

raise it up and down.



Extend the arm sideways, slightly above the horizontal;

palm to the front; wave the

arm to and from the head several times.

Extend both arms horizontally to the sides and then bend your arms at the elbow so that your hands move across your face,

one above the other. Palms should face out.

Simulate cranking of the engines by moving the arm, with the fist, in

a circular motion at waist level.

Move a light to describe a horizontal figure 8 in a vertical

plane in front of the body.


Raise the hand upward to the full extent of the arm, palm to the front. Hold that

position until the signal is understood.

Move a light horizontally back and forth several times across the path of

approaching traffic to stop vehicles. Use the same signal to stop engines.

HALT or STOPHALT or STOP


Raise the fist to shoulder level; thrust the fist upward the full extent of the arm and back to shoulder level (rapidly) several times.

Move a light vertically several times in front of the body.



OPEN UPOPEN UPExtend the arms overhead, palms inward, then slowly lower arms to a

horizontal position.


CLOSE UPCLOSE UP

Extend both arms parallel to the ground, palms up, then move the arms upward and inward towards the head.




Face the vehicle(s) being signaled, raise the hands to shoulder level, palms to the front. Move hands forward and backward.

Hold a light at shoulder level; blink it several times toward the vehicle.

Face the vehicle(s) being signaled. Extend the forearms to the front, palms in-ward and separated (width of the shoulders). Bring the palms together as thevehicle(s) approaches. The vehicle(s) must stop when the palms come together.



Extend the arms, make two or three movements up and down, hands open towards ground.



STOPSTOP(Alternate signal to stop tracked vehicles)(Alternate signal to stop tracked vehicles)


For BUTTON UP, place both hands, one on top of the other, palms down, ontop of the helmet. The arms are back and in same plane as the body.

For UNBUTTON, give BUTTON UP signal, then separate the hands, Moving them to each side in a slicing motion; repeat.

*When alone, flag colors have these meaning.**In poor visibility, you can use colored chemical lights or flashlights

with colored filters in place of flags.








Note: When used alone flag colors have the following meaning:

1. Red-Danger or enemy in sight

2. Green-All clear, ready or understood

3. Yellow-Disregard or vehicle out of action
