2012 Prius Plug-in vs. 2012 Chevrolet Volt
Top Prius Plug-in Advantages Over Volt
The Chevrolet Volt has a bit of an identity crisis. Early publicity said it would be a series hybrid (the wheels are powered solely by electricity), but in the end it became a parallel hybrid (the wheels can be powered directly from the gas engine). Some shoppers may still regard Volt as an “electric car,” but it is not.
In contrast, you can think of the new Prius Plug-in as simply more of what people already love about Prius, now with added EV range and plug-in capability. The traditional Prius virtues and these new advantages combine to make Plug-in a formidable competitor to Volt, as this Edge will show.

More intelligent charging
Once Volt’s batteries are discharged, it uses the gas engine until the car is recharged by plugging in. In Prius Plug-in, the gas engine can recharge the batteries enough to enable a return to EV mode. However, under normal driving conditions, both cars require plugging in for a full recharge.
