Transport Commissioner visits Queen's
Mike Brown MVO, Commissioner of Transport for London, has visited
the William Wright Technology Centre (W-Tech), part of the School of
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
Professor John Garry on Taoiseach Leo Varadkar's public lecture at Queen's
Professor John Garry from the School of History, Anthropology,
Philosophy and Politics reflects on Leo Varadkar's first public visit to
Northern Ireland and the growing European impatience with the lack of
progress in the UK's Brexit plans.
£790,000 to support blood cancer research Funding of £790,000 provided by local blood cancer charity Leukaemia
and Lymphoma NI, will create two new research posts at Queen's, and
recognises the impact that the University has globally in the field
of cancer research.

New Bernard MacLaverty novel
Forty years on from his first book Secrets &
Other Stories and sixteen since The Anatomy
School, the internationally acclaimed and
award winning author Bernard MacLaverty (BA,
1974) has published his fifth novel - Midwinter
Break. Set in Amsterdam it has strong
Northern Ireland connotations.
Bernard MacLaverty has written five collections
of stories and four other novels, including Lamb
(1980) and Cal (1983). Booker Prize
shortlisted Grace Notes (1997) won the Saltire
Scottish Book of the Year Award.
UN role for conflict expert
The United Nations (UN) has appointed
Queen's graduate Fionnuala Ní Aoláin (LLB
1991, PhD 1997), an expert on conflict
resolution, to the new human rights position of
UN Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and
Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental
Freedoms while countering Terrorism.
Professor Ní Aoláin, who concurrently holds
academic posts in the USA/UK, was named
Regents Professor of Law by the University of
Minnesota in June, for her accomplishments in
teaching, research and scholarship.
Queen's hosts 2017 WRWC
The Stadium at Queen's Upper Malone facility
was the venue for six of the post-pool games in

45,412. And it was the most viewed - bringing in
TV audiences from across the globe with Ireland,
France, the UK and USA all showing to record

Invest NI Northern Ireland Connections Event
Invest NI is holding a Northern Ireland Connections event on Friday
20 October from 6pm-8pm in the British Consulate General (1
Supreme Court Road, Hong Kong).
This is a free event and places will be allocated on a 'first come'
basis. Drinks and light refreshments will be provided. If you are

QUAL Annual Gala Dinner
Bookings are now being taken for the 2017 Queen's University
Association London Annual Dinner which takes place at the Law
Society on Chancery Lane on Wednesday 15th November 2017.
The guest speakers will include Supreme Court Justice Lord Kerr of
Tonaghmore (LLB 1969) and Queen's Pro-Vice-Chancellor for
Education and Students, Professor David Jones.

enable the University to deliver a better experience for students

Hans Sloane Medal
The Trustees responsible fo the Hans Sloane Medal are trying to
catch up with past winners to see what they have been doing since.
The Medal has been awarded to the top A Level student in
combined results of Biology, Chemistry and Physics for 50 years.
If you won a Hans Sloane Medal, or know some-one else who did,
please get in touch and we will forward you details of the co-
ordinator.
