Navigator 600 Series AnalyzersSilica and Phosphate 1 Introduction
2 IM/NAV6PBS Issue 2
1 Introduction
1.1 ProfibusProfibus is a manufacturer-independent, open fieldbus standardfor a wide range of applications in manufacturing, process andbuilding automation. Manufacturer independence and opennessare ensured by the international standard EN 50170.
Using the Profibus protocol, devices from differentmanufacturers exchange information on the samecommunications bus without the need for special interfaceequipment.
The Profibus family comprises three types of protocol, ProfibusDP, Profibus FMS and Profibus PA, each of which is used fordifferent tasks. Of these three protocols, the most important forprocess automation are Profibus DP and Profibus PA.
Further information on Profibus can be found atwww.profibus.com.
1.1.1 Profibus DPProfibus DP is designed for high-speed data exchange and iscommonly used by complex or externally-powered devices. Thecentral controller or 'master' device (e.g. PLC or PC) utilizesProfibus DP as a fast serial connection with distributed (slave)field devices such as Profibus-enabled Navigator 600 Seriesanalyzers.
DP-V0 is the basic stage of the Profibus DP communicationprotocol. DP-V0 provides cyclic data exchange between masterand slave devices.
The Navigator 600 Series analyzers also support the DP-V1extension that enables additional acyclic communicationbetween master and slave devices.
1.1.2 Profibus PAProfibus PA is designed to accommodate process automationfield devices that require power via the network with the optionto use intrinsic safety for hazardous areas. Typical devices usingthis protocol include transmitters and positioners.
A DP/PA coupler or link device is used to connect the ProfibusPA network to the Profibus DP network.
1.2 Profibus and ABB ProductsNavigator 600 Series analyzers utilize Profibus DP as this is theprotocol optimized for high speed and low connection costs(see www.abb.com/fieldbus and follow the Profibus link).
1.3 Profibus DP Transmission TechnologyThe transfer method of Profibus DP is RS485 – a proventechnology. A twisted, shielded, two-wire copper cable is usedas the transfer medium.
The bus structure enables addition and removal of stations orstep-by-step commissioning of the system without affectingother stations. Later expansion has no influence on stationsalready in operation.
Transmission speeds of between 9.6 kbit/sec and 12 Mbit/secare available. One uniform transmission speed is selected for alldevices on the bus when the system is commissioned.
Note. This Supplementary User Guide contains informationspecific to Profibus DP-enabled Navigator 600 Seriesanalyzers and must be read in conjunction with the UserGuide relevant to each model.
Navigator 600 Series AnalyzersSilica and Phosphate 2 Installation
IM/NAV6PBS Issue 2 3
2 Installation2.1 Installation Overview – Fig. 2.1All devices are connected in a bus structure ('line'). Up to 32stations (master or slaves) can be linked to create one'segment'.
Each end of a segment must be terminated by an active busterminating resistor. Both bus terminators must always bepowered to ensure fault-free operation therefore it is stronglyrecommended that they are connected to a back-up powersupply.
Up to three line bus amplifiers (repeaters) can be used to extendthe network to a total of four segments, allowing a maximum of125 devices to be installed in the system.
2.2 Cable LengthThe maximum cable length of a segment is determined by thetransmission speed – see Table 2.1. The cable length specifiedcan be extended by using repeaters but it is recommended thatno more than three repeaters are connected in series.
2.3 Cable SpecificationThe cable lengths in Table 2.1 refer to the following cable type:
Suitable Profibus cable, part nos. PCA010, PCA 011 andPCA 012, can be obtained from ABB. Refer to Data Sheet10/63-6.46 EN.
2.4 Device Integration – the GSD FileProfibus devices differ with respect to available functionality andparameters and these vary individually for each device type andmanufacturer. In order to obtain 'Plug-and-Play' configurationfor Profibus, characteristic device communication features suchas manufacturer name, device name, hardware/softwareversions, baud rate and the number and nature ofinputs/outputs are defined in an electronic device data sheetknown as a GSD file.
A GSD file is readable ASCII text file that contains both generaland device-specific specifications for communication. Each ofthe entries describes a feature supported by a device. By themeans of keywords, a configuration tool reads the deviceidentification, the adjustable parameters, the correspondingdata type and the permitted limit values for the configuration ofthe device from the GSD. Some keywords are mandatory, e.g.Vendor_Name; others are optional, e.g. Sync_Mode_supported.
The GSD file (ABB_OAD4_1001.gsd) for Profibus-enabledNavigator 600 Series analyzers conforms to the Profibusstandard.

Warning. When connecting a Profibus-enabled Navigator 600 Series analyzer to a Profibus-DP network:
Use shielded data lines and ensure they are not reversed.
Ensure all data lines are routed clear of the source of any strong electrical and magnetic fields.
Refer to the User Guide for all other installation and connection details.

3.2 Network Configuration
To configure Profibus communications, refer to Section 11.6 of the User Guide relevant to the analyzer model and access theProfibus tab:
Note. A Navigator 600 Series analyzer is not configured using Profibus commands but via the analyzer's keypad and menusystem.
Fields Description
Slave Address
A unique identifying number for the analyzer from 1 to 126.
A default address of 6 is set in the factory before shipping. This address can be changed to any value from 1 to 125 to enable the analyzer to be visible on a Profibus system.
