1 Introduction

BACK was originally developed as a commissioning and integration tool to help off-load the time-consuming on-field work as its name indicating BTS Advanced Commissioning Kit.

Current version supports TCU-A of MCELL, TCU-B of MCELL and CTU of HORIZON. It is fully available for GSM900 and DCS1800. Regarding the scenario of China, the transceiver of INCELL backwards and PCS1900 can NOT be covered by BACK.

BACK application allows one-click operation for RX path calibration, TX path calibration and VSWR measurement with respect to GSM, Extended GSM and DCS frequency spectrum. It embeds a communication program that ease engineers to put script in and get response out.

2 Installation2.1 Installation Requirement2.1.1 Hardware

Pentium 100 or higher recommended. It is supposed to run possibly on lower.

16 MB RAM 10 MB free space hardisk ( for complete installation )

2.1.2 Software Windows 95,98, NT and 2000.

2.2 Installation instructionBACK software is provided with a setup utility easing the installation procedure.Uncompressed the software into a directory, run “setup.exe” from the

directory. All the files necessary to run the software are installed by the setup utility and no more files should be installed manually.Once the installation is completed, a new program group called “BACK” will appear on your “Start->Programs”menu. The BACK utility is included in this group.NOTE:During the process of installation, your PC probably indicates whether some files would be updated by BACK. Just click “ No” to avoid any update

by this software. If some files are updated by BACK, your PC may suffer failure of installation. In some particular case, when run “setup.exe”, you probably come across the system indication “Run time error “52” / “53” –(Bad file name or number), please follow this guide:Open the BACK install directory Delete the file “Setup.lst” change the file “Setup.txt” into “Setup.lst” Redo your setup procedure. The negative result is that BACK could not be put into start menu, instead, you should explore it in file directory yourself.

3 About this manual This user manual relates to BACK version 1.0.

4 Utilization4.1 Overview Here below introduces BACK key concepts which are used throughout the user manual.

BTS type Site type Preparation Rx calibration Tx calibration VSWR TCU_CLOCK 0

BTS type BSS Type describes the cabinet type you will work on, Example: M-Cell2/6, M-Cell2/6(for TCU-B), Horizon etc.

Site type Site Type describes the frequency spectrum applied on site Namely, PGSM, EGSM and DCS Preparation

Preparation enables transciever to be into test mode.

1. Rx Calibration Rx Calibration describes the procedure to calibrate the bay level offset tables to compensate for the losses or gains due to preselectors and RF cabling from the antenna inputs at the BTS

2. Tx Calibration Tx Calibration describes the output power calibration procedure which is to set the pre-defined maximum transmitter output power at the top of the cabinet.

3. VSWR VSWR describes the check operation which ensure that antenna feeders and connectors are properly terminated

4. TCU_Clock 0 TCU_Clock 0 forces transceiver to Stop hunting between fibre A and fibre B and to look only at fibre A

4.2 Getting started

Press the Start button of the main menu ->Program ->BACK ver 1.0 => BTS Advanced Commissioning Kit. (See Figure 1.0)

Figure 1.0

4.3 Main window When Starting BACK, the main screen looks as below: (See figure 1.1)

You can access three menu options: Port, Communication and Help. Port: help you to set-up serial port for communication between PC and BTS.Communication: main commissioning work done hereHelp: online help provided

The toolbar below matches the functions of each option above. (See figure 1.2)

4.4.1 Serial port configuration The Port configuration provides an appropriate communication channel between BACK and BTS as a terminal window. The port configuration lets you configure each one of the serial ports that the program detects as being available. As a result, the following window will appear: (See figure 1.4)

Figure 1.4

You will be able to configure the serial port’s parameters which are: Baud rate Connection preference: Data bits, parity and stop bits.

4.4.2 Communication option4.4.2.1Term window utility

As indicated below, when Terminal window pop-up, the communication between BACK and BTS is set up similar to Hyper terminal window utility in Windows Office. (See figure 1.5)Note that the premise of Term window utility is to configure the serial port appropriately.

4.4.2.2.1 Terminal window

Single-click button of Terminal window enables you to access a terminal window as same as mentioned above.

Figure 1.7

4.4.2.2.2 TCU_Clock 0Single-click button of TCU-Clock 0 is the action which is required by Motorola service manual prior to commissioning procedure. The description on this can be found in Motorola service manual.Note that the specified RSS cable should be connected to transceiver before this action. Otherwise warning information should be seen. (Refer to Motorola service manual)

4.4.2.2.3 Preparation Single-click on button of preparation lets transceiver enter test mode.Note that EQCP cable should be connected to transceiver for this step (refer to Motorola service manual). Otherwise the warning information will indicate wrong action.

Figure1.9Note: the TCU_clock 0 and preparation must be prerequisite prior to commissioning Tx, Rx path and VSWR.

4.4.2.2.4 Rx path Calibration

Single-click the button of Rx path calibration lets you execute the process of Rx path calibration specified in Motorola service manual. You will get the window as below. (See Figure2.0) Reception (A or B) to identify which receive antenna branch to be

calibrated

Antenna (1, 2 or 3) to identify which receive antenna to be calibrated

Calibration to execute the bay level offset process

Read to help you get the bay level offset value prior or posterior to calibration.

Save to enable bay level offset value to be written into ROM. When you finish bay level offset calibration for all specified frequencies inside table, the offset value will be saved automatically into ROM. This Save action is more important in case that you select one specific frequency to be calibrated.

Terminal to provide you with a terminal window for communication between BACK and carrier.

Calibration table the bay level offset value will appear on this table as the result of calibration during the calibration process.Note: Double-click on specific frequency will help you to execute bay level offset calibration on this frequency. It is must to take Save action once you perform it.

Dec button to lower the transceiver’s transmit power by a step of 0.2 dB. Note: When you perform changing the transceiver transmit power, there is a progress bar with button at both sides to increase or decrease the output level

when clicked during the calibration process Start button to initialize the Tx path calibration process.

Terminal button to launch a terminal window from this action.

Save button to write the Tx transmit power value into ROM of transceiver.

Add button to upper the transceiver’s transmit power by a step of 0.2 dB

The upper session of the window shows you the Tx calibration results. Especially, the Read button let you directly get the offset value from the transceiver. (See figure2.3)

Figure2.3

4.4.2.2.6 VSWR (Voltage Stand Wave Ratio) This window manages the VSWR operation. This table controls the transceiver to set maximum output power on the fixed frequencies. (See the figure 2.4). It could be considered as an approximate test for the whole frequency spectrum. In addition, this window can automatically calculate the VSWR value from the manual input of Forward and Reverse power value. Currently, it can not support saving VSWR value.Note: The frequencies appeared in this window is fixed hence you have to follow these frequencies for execution. For user’s convenience, you can double-click on one specified frequency to execute VSWR on that specific frequency.
