Batteries

Your Leica Geosystemsinstrument is operated withrechargable plug-in batteries. The Basic battery (GEB111) orthe Pro battery (GEB121) isrecommended for TPS110 Series instruments. As anoption, six individual cells canbe used with the appropriatebattery adapter GAD39.

Six individual cells (1.5 V each)produce a voltage of 9 Volts. The battery indicator in thedisplay is designed for a voltageof 6 Volts (GEB111/GEB121).For this reason the charge stateof individual cells is notindicated correctly. The batteryadapter with individual cellsshould therefore be used as abackup.

The advantage of individualcells is the low self-dischargerate - even over longer periodsof time.

Use the LeicaGeosystems batteries, chargers and accessoriesor accessoriesrecommended by LeicaGeosystems to ensurethe correct functionality ofthe instrument.

External power supply for total station

To meet the conditionsstipulated for electromagneticacceptability when powering theTCR110 from an externalsource, the supply cable usedmust be equipped with a ferritecore.

The Lemo plug with theferrite core always has

to be attached at the instrumentside.

The cables supplied along withyour instrument include a ferritecore as standard. If you are using older cableswithout ferrite core, it'snecessary to attach ferrite coresto the cable. If you need additional ferritecores, please contact your localLeica Geosystems agency. Thespare-part number of the ferritecore is 703 707. For assembling open up one

ferrite core and clip it around thesupply cable, about 2cm awayfrom the Lemo plug, beforeusing the supply cable for thefirst time together with aTCR110 instrument.

Measuring34

Distance measurement, continued

A laser distancer (EDM) isincorporated into theinstruments of the TPS110 series.

In all versions, the distance canbe determined by using aninvisible infrared beam whichemerges coaxially from thetelescope objective.

Measurements tostrongly reflecting

targets such as to traffic lightsin infrared mode withoutprism should be avoided. Themeasured distances may bewrong or inaccurate.

For applications withoutreflector, the TCR-version alsouse a visible red laser beamwhich emerges in the same

manner.

When a distancemeasurement istriggered, the EDM

measures to the object whichis in the beam path at thatmoment.

If e.g. people, cars, animals, swaying branches, etc. cross thelaser beam while a measurementis being taken, a fraction of thelaser beam is reflected and maylead to incorrect distance values.Avoid interrupting the measuringbeam while taking reflectorlessmeasurements or measurementsusing reflective foils.Measurements to prismreflectors are only critical if anobject crosses the measuringbeam at a distance of 0 to 30m

and the distance to be measuredis more than 300m.In practice, because themeasuring time is very short, theuser can always find a way ofavoiding these critical situations.

Measuring35

Distance measurement, continued

Reflectorless

Be sure that the laserbeam is not reflected by

anything close to the line ofsight (e.g. highly reflectiveobjects).

When a distancemeasurement is

triggered, the EDM measures tothe object which is in the beampath at that moment. In case oftemporary obstruction (e.g. apassing vehicle, heavy rain, fogor snow) the EDM may measureto the obstruction.

When measuring longerdistances, any

divergence of the red laserbeam from the line of sightmight lead to less accuratemeasurements. This is because

the laser beam might not bereflected from the point at whichthe crosshairs are pointing.

Therefore, it is recommended toverify that the R-laser is wellcollimated with the telescopeline of sight (refer to the chapter"Checking and adjusting").

Do not measure with twoinstruments to the same

target simultaneously.

Red laser to prisms

WARNING:Due to laser safetyregulations and

measuring accuracy, using thevisible red laser (RL) is onlyallowed to prisms that are morethan 1000 m (3300 ft) away.

Accurate measurementsto prisms should be

made with the standard program(Infrared mode).

Red laser to reflector tape

The visible red laser beam canbe used to measure to reflectivefoils, also. To guarantee theaccuracy the red laser beammust be perpendicular to thereflector tape and it must be welladjusted (refer to the chapter"Checking and adjusting").

Make sure the additiveconstant belongs to the

selected target (reflector).

cElectronically

The instruments are adjusted inthe factory prior to shipping.

Instrument errors can changewith time and temperature.

These errors should bedetermined before the

instrument is used for the firsttime, before precision surveys, after long periods of transport, before and after long periods ofwork, and if the temperaturechanges by more than 10°C(18°F).

Before determining theinstrument errors, level-up the instrument using

the electronic bubble. Theinstrument should be secureand firm, and should beprotected from direct sunlight inorder to avoid thermal warmingon one side only.

Line-Of-Sight Error (Hz-Collim.)

The line-of-sight error orcollimation error (C) is thedeviation from the perpendicularbetween the tilting axis and theline of sight. The effect of the line-of-sighterror to the Hz-angle increaseswith the vertical angle. For horizontal aimings the errorof the Hz-angle equals the line-of-sight error.

The laser plummet is integratedinto the vertical axis of theinstrument. Under normalcircumstances setting of thelaser plummet is not necessary. If an adjustment is necessarydue to external influences theinstrument has to be returned toany Leica service department.

Checking by turning theinstrument by 360°:1. Install the instrument on the

Checking and Adjusting62

Laser Plummet, continued

Inspecting the laser plummetshould be carried out on abright, smooth and horizonalsurface (e.g. a sheet of paper).

If the centre of the laser spotmakes a clear circularmovement or if the centre of thepoint is moving away more than1mm from the first marked pointan adjustment is possiblynecessary. Call your nearestLeica service department.

Depending on brightness andsurface the size of the laserspot can vary. At a distance of1.5 m an average value of 2.5mm diameter must beestimated.

The maximum diameter of thecircular movement of the centreof the laser spot should notexceed +/- 0.8 mm at a distanceof 1.5 m.

Reflectorless EDM

The red laser beam used formeasuring without reflector isarranged coaxially with the lineof sight of the telescope, andemerges from the objective port.If the instrument is welladjusted, the red measuringbeam will coincide with thevisual line of sight. Externalinfluences such as shock orlarge temperature fluctuationscan displace the red measuringbeam relative to the line of sight.

The direction of thebeam should be

inspected before precisemeasurement of distances isattempted, because anexcessive deviation of the laserbeam from the line of sight canresult in imprecise distancemeasurements.

Inspection

A target plate is provided. Set itup between five and 20 metresaway with the grey reflectiveside facing the instrument. Movethe telescope to face II. Switchon the red laser beam byactivating the laser-pointfunction. Use the telescopecrosshair to align the instrumentwith the centre of the targetplate, and then inspect theposition of the red laser spot onthe target plate. Generallyspeaking the red spot cannot beseen through the telescope, solook at the target plate from justabove the telescope or from justto the side of it.

If the spot illuminates the cross, the achievable adjustmentprecision has been reached. If it lies outside the limits of thecross, the direction of the beamneeds to be adjusted.

If the spot on the more reflectiveside of the plate is too bright(dazzling), use the white sideinstead to carry out theinspection.

The term "electromagneticcompatibility" is taken to meanthe capability of the instrumentto function correctly in anenvironment whereelectromagnetic radiation andelectrostatic discharges arepresent, and without causingelectromagnetic disturbances inother equipment.

WARNING:Electromagneticradiation can cause

disturbances in otherequipment.

Although electronic total stationsmeet the strict regulations andstandards which are in force inthis respect, Leica Geosystemscannot completely exclude thepossibility that other equipmentmay be disturbed.

CAUTION:

There is a risk thatdisturbances may becaused in other

equipment if the total station isused in conjunction withaccessories from othermanufacturers, e.g. fieldcomputers, personal computers,walkie-talkies, non-standardcables, external batteries.Precautions:Use only the equipment andaccessories recommended byLeica Geosystems. Whencombined with total stations, they meet the strictrequirements stipulated by theguidelines and standards. Whenusing computers and walkie-talkies, pay attention to theinformation aboutelectromagnetic compatibilityprovided by the manufacturer.

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), continued

CAUTION:Disturbances caused byelectromagnetic radiation

can result in the tolerance limitsfor measurements beingexceeded.

Although the total stations meetthe strict regulations andstandards which are in force inthis connection, Leica Geosys-tems cannot completely excludethe possibility that the totalstation may be disturbed by veryintense electromagneticradiation, e.g. near radiotransmitters, walkie-talkies,diesel generators, power cables.Check the plausibility of resultsobtained under these conditions.

WARNING:If the total station isoperated with connecting

cables attached at only one oftheir two ends (e.g. externalsupply cables, interface cables),the permitted level ofelectromagnetic radiation maybe exceeded and the correctfunctioning of other instrumentsmay be impaired.Precautions:While the total station is in use, connecting cables (e.g.instrument to external battery, instrument to computer) mustbe connected at both ends.
