• Do not attempt to disassemble or modify this device. Maintenance and/or repair work must be carried out by professionals only. If the safety warnings are not followed, warranty, performance and product liability claims will be invalidated.

• Only use the AC power cord supplied with the charger or recommended by the supplier.

• If the power cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent or a professionally qualified person to avoid danger.

• Remove the charger from the power supply before connecting / disconnecting the battery. Risk of electric shock.

• A short circuit between the charger's plus (+) and minus (-) may cause fire, electric shock and/or other hazards. Make sure the plug is kept away from all metal when the battery is not connected.

• If/when the metal part of the charger becomes dirty, pull the charger out of the socket and clean with a dry cloth only. Risk of electric shock.

• The charger gets warm during charging. This is normal and not a defect. • Stop charging immediately if charging does not occur within a reasonable

time. • If abnormal odors or deformity of the charger occurs during use,

immediately turn off the power and unplug the power cord to avoid possible danger or risk of fire.

• Please keep the charger cool and dry when not in use. • Do not expose the charger to direct sunlight and/or other heat sources

(e.g. radiators and/or other electrical appliances, chimneys, etc.), moisture, water, flames, fire or high-explosive gas; or in places where liquids (e.g. condensation and water from leaky ceilings) or objects which can enter into the product.

• Please do not dispose of your old appliance with your household waste. Please dispose of it at your local recycling center.

• Ride slowly on rainy, snowy and/or icy roads. Calculate good braking distance on icy roads.

• The eBike is intended for driving in the rain and is not damaged by it. But never immerse the electronic parts (motor, battery) in water and/or other liquids.

• Never lend your eBike without prior thorough instruction in its use.

• Important! Charge the eBike at least once a month, even when not used for long periods. This protects the battery and extends its life.

• Never touch the battery contact points with wet hands and never attempt to short-circuit the battery using tools. Risk of personal and/or product damages.

• Batteries are affected by different weather conditions. Generally, a battery performs best when used at temperatures above 0 °C. The battery capacity is reduced by approx. 1/3 at freezing temperatures. Therefore, the driving distance will be reduced during use below 0 °C. However, the battery is not damaged when used at temperatures below 0 °C.

• All bikes, even the most sturdy and expensive, can be dangerous to drive due to common wear, possible crashes, transportation, age and/or other external factors.

• The user is responsible for using the bicycle safely. It is therefore important to carry out regular safety checks.

• Only use the bike if it is in perfect condition. • Customize your driving style to your abilities and surroundings. • Avoid getting your clothes or bags stuck in the tyres. • Always use a helmet when riding the eBike. • Always remember to have the bike examined by a professional after a

crash or an accident. • Bicycles are only safe to use if they are examined by a specialist every

year. • Unsuitable spare parts and accessories can make the bike dangerous to

use. Always ask a professional. • Drive safely and always be aware that eBikes are silent in use. When you

approach others, it is typically not detected by them. • EBikes are only recommended for users who already can ride a regular

bike. Cyclists who have not been riding for a long time should only ride eBikes in traffic when they are comfortable using it.

• Do not modify the bike or try to improve its driving style or speed. If such modifications occur, the manufacturer will not take responsibility for the eBike and the warranty, performance and product liability claims will be invalidated.

E-Bikes with electric motors (electric bikes) are designed to be used on good surfaces and roads, and they are not suitable for off-road terrain. The maximum capacity of eBike is 120 kg including cyclist and bags. Usage When accelerated, the user must use his/her own muscle power. This is essential when much energy is required. If the battery is not charged, the safety protection is activated, and the display will indicate that the battery needs charging. In this case, charge the battery immediately. Please notice the following must be in accordance with current laws and regulations: • The assist will automatically be deactivated at 25 km/h. • If the motor does not initiate when the eBike is used, first check that the

battery is properly installed. If the problem persists, contact the store where the eBike was purchased.

Purchase Please note the following: • Your bike is ready for use and has been controlled by a professional. • The dealer informed you about the bike's functions and the safety

features. • Always ask for the original instructions when dealing with complicated

parts. Before using the eBike: Read and implement the safety checklist. Practice riding and braking on a safe surface, first using the rear brake and then gradually using the front brake. You must be able to perform a complete full stop without losing control. If the front tyre stops turning, the eBike will become unstable and therefore the brakes should be adjusted by an expert. After 4 weeks or 300 km. • It is normal for any bike - even the most sturdy and expensive - to have

the brakes, gears, bearings and wheels adjusted regularly. This is done to prevent product and personal injuries and malfunctions.

• Read these instructions carefully and make sure that the bike is properly assembled before using it.

• Be careful when riding in the rain, on gravel or on slippery roads. • The bike can be used in the rain without damaging it. However, the

electrical parts, such as the battery and the motor, should never be immersed directly in water.

• Never touch the battery terminals with bare hands and never attempt to short-circuit it.

• Never disassemble the electrical machine part. Contact a specialist. • Never lend your eBike without prior thorough instruction in its use. • Batteries are affected by different weather conditions. Generally, a

battery performs best when used at temperatures above 0 °C. The battery capacity is reduced by approx. 1/3 at freezing temperatures. Therefore, the driving distance will be reduced during use below 0 °C. However, the battery is not damaged when used at temperatures below 0 °C.

Traffic laws and regulations Traffic regulations and laws dictate the following: Lights: Between sunset and sunrise, you must have and use one white light pointing straight forward and one red one pointing straight back. Reflectors: Your bike must have at least one red rear reflector and four amber pedal reflectors. Brakes: Your bike should have two functioning braking systems. Bikes in UK generally have the right-hand lever for the front brake and left hand one – for the rear brake. Bell: Bike bells are not required by law in the UK, but it’s good to have it. A polite but determined, chiefly British “Excuse me” can also work as a less aggressive warning device. Helmet: Wearing a helmet while riding is not mandatory. Cycling rules in the UK • Everyone must drive/ride on the left-hand side of the roadway. Never

ride your bike against the traffic flow. • The use of cycle lanes is not compulsory and will depend on your

experience and skills, but they can make your journey safer. • You may use a lane shared by bikes and pedestrians, but if it’s segregated

you must keep to the side intended for cyclists. In these cases, take care when passing pedestrians, especially children, older or disabled people, and allow them plenty of room.

• You cannot cycle on sidewalks / footpaths. • In pedestrian areas, only ride your cycle if there aren’t too many

pedestrians about; otherwise dismount and push it. Also, if there is signage specifically prohibiting cycling in such areas, you’d better respect it.

• You can ride across cycle-only crossings and so-called Toucan crossings – light-controlled crossings for both cyclists and pedestrians. They are push-button operated. On any other type of crossing you must dismount and walk across.

• You must not cross the stop line when the traffic lights are red. Just don’t. Ever (yes, even when there’s nobody around). Some junctions

Page 10: User manual Witt E-Bikes / UK E-Sumo · 2020. 3. 3. · liability claims will be invalidated. ... crash or an accident. • Bicycles are only safe to use if they are examined by a

10

have an advanced stop line for cyclists where you can wait ahead of other traffic.

• Do not pass between the curb and a bus when the bus is in a bus station. • You must not carry a passenger unless your bike has been built or

adapted to carry one. • You are not allowed to hold onto a moving vehicle or trailer. • When approaching a junction on the left, watch out for vehicles turning

in front of you, out of or into the side road. Just before you turn, check for undertaking cyclists or motorcyclists. Do not ride on the inside of vehicles signaling or slowing down to turn left. Pay extra attention to those nasty big trucks, they are dangerous to cycle next to, especially at junctions.

• If you are turning right, check the traffic to ensure it is safe, then signal and move to the center of the road. Wait until there is a safe gap in the oncoming traffic and give a final look before completing the turn.

• Take extra care when crossing tramway tracks. You should also dismount at level crossings where a ‘cyclist dismount’ sign is displayed.

• Cycling while drunk is, of course, a big NO. While there is no legal limit for the alcohol volume accepted when riding a bike and nothing will happen to your driver’s license, the police can decide you are not able to ride safely and fine you by up to £2,500.

• We also recommend having liability insurance. Check with your insurance company that your insurance covers all damages you may incur on the bike.

• Cyclists must always respect all applicable traffic regulations and laws.

Safety checklist Troubleshooting for this section can be found in the section "Troubleshooting" • Squeeze the brake levers using all your arm power - the handles should

not touch the handlebar. • Squeeze the brake levers and pull the bike forward - the brake pads must

clamp tightly around the discs/rims. • Brake front tire and turn the handlebar - the handlebars must not be able

to rotate. • The saddle must not be able to rotate or rotate up or down. • Check that the tyre is not blocked, the release lever/arm should not

protrude. • Turn the tyres - they should be in line and move smoothly without

touching other parts of the bike. • Let the bike fall freely from 20 cm height - if accessories such as rear bike

rack, displays or lights are moving or falling off, they may be mounted incorrectly.

• Check the lights and the bell. • Check tyre condition and pressure and look for loose spokes. • Check the frame, handlebar and grip for scratches and dents. • The brakes and cables should not show signs of wear or damage. • Check for broken links in the bike chain. • Test the brakes and gearshift with a test drive. • Check the electric motor and the charging level.

12

Troubleshooting Maintenance performed by unqualified technicians can result in serious accidents: • The brake lever screw can be used to adjust the distance between the

handles and the handlebar. • Brake adjustments should be performed by an expert. • Normally the handlebar can be tightened using a screw that is in the

center of the handlebar. All other adjustments should be made by an expert.

• Tighten all screws around the saddle. • The saddle and handlebar can only be adjusted up to the line on their

respective bar. • Align the tyre, tighten the nuts and lock the release lever/arm. • Loosen and straighten the tyre - the distance from the front fork and

frame should be proportional. • Tighten loose screws. Have an expert repair any part or screw that is

defective. • Tighten loose screws, replace the lights, secure the cables. • Pump air into the hose with a hand pump - compressed air can damage

the tyres. Get an expert to repair defective tyres or loose spokes. • Any minor damage should be repaired by qualified personnel. • Damaged cables should be replaced by qualified personnel immediately. • Damaged chains should be replaced by qualified personnel immediately. • If the brake is too powerful, weak or unstable, or if the bike is running

unstable or irregular, or if the gearshift does not work optimally, the eBike must be repaired by an expert.

• Consult a qualified service center for servicing the electric motor.

Safe bike ride • Only use the bike if you are healthy and in good shape. • Do not use the bike if you are affected by alcohol, drugs or medication. • The bike should be adjusted according to your weight. • Practice cycling, braking, shifting gears and turning safely before riding in

tight traffic. • Wear gloves in cold weather to always be able to hold the handle with

both hands and use force when braking. • Always keep your bags secured on the rear bike rack. • Do not hang bags on the handlebar. Risk of serious accidents. • Be aware of the effect of heavy bags: use proper bicycle bags that ensure

the bike's balance. • Bicycles have a longer braking distance than cars, so be sure to respect

the safety distance. • The braking distance increases on damp, wet or dirty surfaces. • Ride with caution - electric bikes do not accelerate fast! • Do not make any sudden movements while starting the bike, otherwise

you risk falling. • Practice a quick start before a climb to avoid riding too slowly and thus

risking crashing the bike. Transportation • When transporting the bike, it must be fixed horizontally on a suitable

roof mounted bicycle rack on the car to avoid unnecessary strains on the handlebar and other parts.

• Remove all accessories such as displays, bottles, pumps etc., otherwise these can loosen during transport.

• When the bicycle is transported at high speed and in rain, water will penetrate the bearings and into cables which cause damages.

• Make sure the rear derailleur/gear is upwards to avoid damage if the eBike is transported horizontally in a vehicle.

• Read and perform the safety checklist before any kind of transport.

Page 14: User manual Witt E-Bikes / UK E-Sumo · 2020. 3. 3. · liability claims will be invalidated. ... crash or an accident. • Bicycles are only safe to use if they are examined by a

14

Maintenance • Every bike should be checked by an expert at least once a year. This to

find eventual hidden defects such as micro-damage to the frame or handlebars, broken brake cables, broken tyre rims, worn brake pads, etc.

• Use only suitable and original spare parts - pay attention to the replacement of brake pads to fit the tyre rim and that the brake force meets local traffic regulations.

• In case the control display shows an opaque error message, contact the store where the eBike was purchased.

• Keep the bike and display clean and avoid water ingress (rain is not a problem). Do not immerse the battery into water. Do not clean the bike with a water pump or a pressure washer. Only use a damp cloth.

• Always keep the battery charged regardless of whether the bike is in use or not.

• Use only the original battery charger. • If the eBike is to be stored, be sure to recharge the battery regularly - at

least once a month - to prevent the battery from losing capacity. • Store the battery in a dry place at room temperature. • The battery reaches its maximum charging capacity after being charged

10 times. • Do not expose the battery to high temperatures such as direct sunlight,

open flames, etc. • If the battery leaks after an accident, it must be replaced immediately.

Contact the store where the eBike was bought. • Batteries may not be disposed as general waste but must be disposed at

a waste disposal site according to applicable laws and regulations. • Do not strain the bike. This includes using bicycle trailers and off-road

riding. • Remember to assist the electrical energy using your own muscle power

at steep inclines to prevent the system from overheating. In case of overheating, a fuse is activated to avoid personal and/or product damages.

• To save battery power during acceleration, you can assist by using your own muscle power.

15

Cleaning and storage Cleaning • Regularly clean your bike - this is also the best way to find eventual

damages on the bike. • Bicycles should not be cleaned with a pressure washer, with steam or

water jets. These cleaning methods can push sand grains and moisture into the bearings and cables, thereby damaging the bicycle.

• Clean the bike with warm water and soap to remove grease and dirt. You can find a suitable cleaning product at your local bicycle dealer.

• Also clean the chain and gears. A clean and greased chain that runs smoothly increases the life of the gears.

• After cleaning the chain and gears, lubricate them by using a suitable water-repellent product.

• Problems such as dirty or rusty parts, especially when it comes to the chain, are not included in the warranty. Chains are not immune to rust and should be cared for.

• Remove residual grease from the tire rim after cleaning and lubrication. • Remaining grease on the tire rim can reduce braking efficiency. Storage • When not in use, store the eBike in a dry place. If it is outside, its life can

be reduced. Therefore, it is also important to protect the bike with an anti-rust coating. This product can be purchased at your local bicycle dealer.

• If the bike is not in use for a long period of time, it can be hung on the wall as it will protect the tyres from damage.

• Clean and prepare the bike before storing and have it checked by a specialized bicycle mechanic.

• Remember to deactivate the system by turning off the main switch. • Even though the bicycle can be used in rain and poor weather, the bicycle

must be stored under a roof preventing moisture from affecting the electrical parts and the motor.

• Remember to protect the bike against theft. • Remember to charge the battery every month, when the eBike is

stored.

Battery and charger safety Your eBike is equipped with a lithium battery. Never charge the battery with a non-suitable charger. When using such a charger, the battery may overheat or in worst-case cause fire or explode. If the battery charger is damaged or lost, ask for a new charger from your local dealer. Keep the battery charged even if you are not using the bike. The battery can be charged directly on the bike or demounted. Do not charge the battery near flammable objects, children or babies. Remove all valuable objects from the battery when charging. The charging time varies according to how much power is left on the battery. When the battery is fully charged, the LED charger goes from red to green. This indicates that the charger can be removed from the battery. Never leave the battery charger connected to the battery for a long time. Lithium batteries are discharged slowly and do not need constant recharging (charging overnight is recommended). • The battery and charger may become hot during charging. This is normal. • New batteries are charged 50%. Charge them as soon as you can and

charge the battery for 14 hours the first time it is charged. • The battery charger is equipped with an indicator light. When the light is

red, the battery charges while green light indicates that the battery is fully charged (green light also indicates that no battery is connected to the charger).

• Be aware that the power supply must be compatible with the battery charger.

• Only use the battery charger indoors. • Charge the battery and keep it out of reach of children. • Do not attempt to open the battery charger as it contains high voltage

parts. • Do not touch both electrodes simultaneously. Risk of electric shock. • Do not remove the battery from the bike whilst charging.

• Charge the battery at least 2 hours per month. The manufacturer/distributor cannot be held liable unless this is followed, and the warranty does not cover.

• Never charge the battery with different chargers. • Prevent liquids or metal objects to enter the charger. • Never use the battery charger near oil, dust, dirt or steam. Avoid

exposing it to direct sunlight. • Never use the battery charger during a storm. Use the battery charger in

ventilated areas and not too hot places. • Do not use the battery charger near open flames or fire. • Never expose the battery to bumps or excessive vibration. • Opening or damaging the battery will void the warranty. • The eBike is designed to be used by one user under normal traffic

conditions. • Never use the bike in terrain and never try to jump with it. Do not

overload it, as it can cause personal and product damages. Important! • Check that the nuts on the front and rear tyres are properly tightened. • Check that the crank is properly tightened. • Check that the tyres are in good condition and that the tire pressure is

correct. Low tyre pressure reduces driving distance per charge. • Check that all nuts are tightened. • Check that the brake pads are properly adjusted. • Check that the brake cables are intact. • REMEMBER TO CHARGE YOUR BATTERY AT LEAST ONE TIME EVERY

MONTH.

2 years on the frame • The warranty covers all defects, which originate from production defects

or material defects. It does not cover damage from wear and tear or indecent use.

• A proof of purchase must accompany any claim notification. • The warranty period begins the day the product is purchased. • Any claim notification must be given to the dealer. 2 years on the battery and electric parts • The warranty covers battery operation. • The warranty only covers if maintenance and inspections have been

carried out, as described in this manual. • All care and maintenance warnings must be observed and

respected. • Claim notifications must be processed by the dealer. • If the terms of trade are not respected, the manufacturer/distributor is

entitled to reject the claim and therefore you are liable to cover the costs.

Note: All rechargeable batteries wear out over time and after use. As time passes and the usage increases, performance is reduced. It is therefore to be expected that after two years the battery will have a performance of approx. 70% depending on usage and maintenance. Be sure to follow the battery instructions to ensure optimum results. Make sure you treat your battery, and in general your eBike, with care. Do not let the battery stay on the bike when it is not being used, although it may well endure it - make it a habit to remove it and charge it completely after use. It prolongs its life and reduces damages.
