Important Information

WARNING If the pen display for the Sympodium™ L250 interactive lectern is damaged, DO NOT touch any liquid that may be leaking from it. This liquid is an irritant. If it makes contact with your skin, eyes or mouth, immediately rinse the affected area with running water for at least 15 minutes. Consult a physician if this liquid makes contact with your eyes or mouth.

WARNING Do not open or disassemble any of the components in the Sympodium L250 interactive lectern. If you do so, you risk electrical shock from the high voltage inside the casing of the components. Also, if you open the casing of the pen display, you void your warranty.

WARNINGDo not allow children to play with the stylus because they may accidentally remove the small tip, which can be a choking hazard.

CAUTION The Sympodium L250 interactive lectern is certified for use in North America only. Because of this, ONLY connect the Sympodium L250 interactive lectern to a mains voltage circuit of 110V/120V 60 Hz. It isn’t designed for use on 220V/240V 50 Hz circuits.

CAUTION As the pen display is extremely sensitive to liquids, don’t apply glass cleaner or any organic solvent such as alcohol or even mild detergent. Use of these cleaners can damage the pen display’s finish or seep into the electronics, voiding your warranty coverage. See page 24 for more detailed cleaning information.

Do not immerse the stylus in liquid.

CAUTION Do not use the L250 in a facility control system that requires extremely high reliability; the lectern may cause other electronic devices to malfunction, or other devices may cause it to malfunction. Where use is prohibited, power off the pen display. SMART Technologies Inc. does not accept any liability for direct or consequential damages. For details, refer to the warranty shipped with the lectern.

CAUTION Only use the power adapter that came with the L250 to install the interactive pen display. Other adapters may not work properly, may damage the L250, and may create a fire hazard. If you use a different power adapter, you’ll void your warranty.

Page 4: User’s Guide - Smart Technologiesdownloads.smarttech.com/media/products/sym/guides/l250... · 2020-04-02 · ii Important Information Other Precautions For proper usage of the L250,

Other PrecautionsFor proper usage of the L250, read this guide carefully and observe the following precautions.

The Components

• Do not place sharp or heavy objects on the L250, especially on the interactive pen display. These objects may scratch the pen display’s surface or block the ventilation holes. Also, don’t use any instrument on the pen display other than the stylus because other instruments may damage the pen display’s coating.

• Do not connect or disconnect the video cable or the power cable if the interactive pen display or your computer is on. Doing so may damage the liquid crystal display (LCD) and/or the computer video card.

• Use the L250 with a video card that can support XGA resolution and a refresh rate no higher than 70 Hz. An inappropriate video card may damage the pen display. Also, while the refresh rate is 45 Hz to 70 Hz in XGA mode, it is 45 Hz to 75 Hz in other modes. However, do not exceed these vertical refresh rates because the pen display may overheat.

• Do not block the ventilation holes. Doing so may cause the L250 to overheat. Also, a computer may overheat in an enclosed space. To avoid this, ensure your computer has a clearance of 1" (2.5 cm) on all sides (including the front and top edges), and that you leave 3" (7.6 cm) between the output of the computer's fan and any side of the enclosure.

• Don’t lift the unit using the countertop surface as that surface isn’t strong enough to support the weight of the unit

• Avoid subjecting the L250 to intensive shock or vibration. You may damage it if you bump it or drop it.

• If you or the service technician needs replacement parts, use ones that are specified by SMART Technologies Inc., or parts approved by SMART that have the same characteristics as the originals

• When you’re not using the L250, turn it off so you conserve the life of the interactive pen display and prevent image ghosting. Also, you should install a screen saver and use the power management features of your operating system.

The Stylus

• The stylus is a sealed unit. There aren’t any user-repairable parts inside, nor are there any batteries. If you attempt to open the stylus, you may break the seal and render the stylus unusable. Also, if you open the stylus, you’ll void your warranty.

• With use, the stylus wears down. Do not use a stylus that has worn down to a sharp or angular tip, as it may damage the pen display. See page 25 for instructions on changing the stylus tip.

ii Important Information

Page 5: User’s Guide - Smart Technologiesdownloads.smarttech.com/media/products/sym/guides/l250... · 2020-04-02 · ii Important Information Other Precautions For proper usage of the L250,

The Environment

• Avoid setting up and using the L250 in an area with excessive levels of dust, humidity and smoke, where it’s exposed to direct sunlight, severe temperature changes, heat from other appliances, water or any other liquid. You should operate the L250 in an environment with a temperature range between 41° F and 95° F (5° C to 35° C) and with a humidity range of 20% to 80% (non-condensing). However, you can store the L250 in an environment with a temperature range of 14° F to 140° F (-10° C to 60° C) and a humidity range of 20% to 90% (non-condensing).

• Do not modify the power cord. Handle it carefully and avoid excessive bending. You should route the power cord through an area where it’s unlikely to be stepped on, or pinched by items placed on or against it. If you must run a cable over the floor, lay it in a flat, straight line, and secure it to the floor with tape or a cable management strip of contrasting color.

• The L250 comes with a three-prong, grounding-type power plug. This plug will only fit into a grounding-type power outlet. If you’re unable to insert the plug into an outlet, contact your electrician to replace the outlet.

• Place the L250 in a location where users will have clear and direct access to the main power plug, as they must be able to unplug the unit at all times. Always disconnect the L250 before you install any devices or perform any maintenance.

• Unplug the L250 during an electrical storm, or if it won’t be used over a long period of time

Locating More Information on the L250Read this guide for instructions on using the Sympodium L250 interactive lectern with the integrated peripherals and your laptop. This guide assumes that an integrator has already connected the necessary input and output devices to the L250. If you need information on integrating the L250 with any device to create an interactive room setup, read the Sympodium L250 Integrator’s Guide.

Also, this guide doesn’t elaborate on the many features of SMART Board™ software. That information is in the SMART Board User’s Guide that comes with the lectern and in the extensive online Help files that come with this application. While you read both the SMART Board User’s Guide and the online Help, keep in mind that:

• the pen display for the L250 works just like a projected SMART Board interactive whiteboard. This means that a stylus touch on the interactive lectern’s pen display is equivalent to a touch on the interactive whiteboard with a finger.

• the stylus, pen tool and function buttons act like the pen tray tools on the interactive whiteboard

Introducing the Sympodium L250 Lectern

When you’re presenting, you can use the SMART Sympodium L250 lectern to control and annotate over computer applications while you face your audience. With the L250, you can control up to four input sources, including your own laptop computer, just by pressing a button. When you press this button, you can hear the audio from the selected source through the room sound system and see the video image of your multimedia presentation on the interactive pen display and any connected display, such as a large projection screen in the auditorium. If the selected source is a computer, you can use the SMART Board tools to annotate over your presentation files and highlight key information. As a result, you can effortlessly deliver a dynamic, interactive presentation.

In a typical setup, the L250 is integrated with:

• an internal computer and an external (laptop) computer

• a document camera

• a room projector

• your network

• a microphone

• a sound system

However, your integrator may have included other devices, such as a VCR or DVD player, another computer or another USB device. (If you need to add devices or components, refer to the SMART Sympodium L250 Integrator’s Guide.)

NOTE: None of these devices is included with the Sympodium L250 interactive lectern.

For the pen display to be interactive, your source device must have the SMART Board tools open. You’ll know they’re open if you can see the SMART Board icon in the system tray (Windows® computers) or the Dock (Macintosh computers). These tools are included with SMART Board software, which you can install on any connected computer. You’ll find information on how to use this software in the SMART Board User’s Guide, which came with the L250, or in the SMART Board software Help files.

SMART Board software includes a number of tools for annotating over computer applications during a lecture or presentation and then saving these annotations, including:

• the SMART Board Control Panel, which lets you configure the pen-tool buttons

• the Floating Tools, which is a virtual palette of annotation tools

• SMART Notebook™ software, which also includes many annotation tools. You can use this application to organize, save and share your annotations.

• SMART Recorder, which can record a video file of everything you do on a computer

• SMART Keyboard, which is a virtual keyboard that allows you to enter text in an application

• SMART Video Player, which is a Windows-only application that allows you to annotate over video and graphics, and then save or clear your annotations. Use this application to highlight the key aspects of your presentation video.

You can set your laptop on the lectern and use the laptop connection panel (see Figure 12) to connect it to the L250 (see page 15). Doing this allows you to use the interactive pen display and any connected device with your laptop. The laptop connection panel includes USB, network, video and audio cables that you can pull out, and you’ll also find a convenient power outlet for your laptop.

Figure 12: The Laptop Connection Panel

The L250 comes with a wireless keyboard, which has a trackball for mouse functions, and an infrared (IR) receiver. In a typical setup, your integrator would set the receiver on the top of the lectern or would mount it using the hook-and-loop fastener. The keyboard is usually placed inside the lectern.

To use the keyboard, remove it from the L250 and place it in a convenient spot. This location must be in a straight line to the IR receiver. If it’s not in a straight line, move either the keyboard or the receiver. If the receiver is mounted, you can detach it from the hook-and-loop fastener, place it in a good location, and then return it to the hook-and-loop fastener when you finish with the keyboard.

The SMART X-Port 40 unit (see Figure 13) switches the input and output signals for RGB video, USB data and the audio each time you press a control panel button. This unit is rack mounted inside the L250 and has an unbalanced-to-balanced audio converter attached to it.

Figure 13: The X-Port 40 Unit inside the Lectern

The L250 supports up to four input and a variety of output devices. Normally, these devices would be connected by an integrator, and some of them may be stored inside the cabinet. Examples of input devices are a computer, document camera or VCR/DVD player. Examples of output devices are a projector, a microphone, a room sound system and another USB device, such as a SMART Board interactive whiteboard or a USB storage device.

Many output devices can connect to the lectern at the lectern connection panel (see Figure 14), which is recessed behind a removable cover at the side of the lectern.

Figure 14: The Location of the Lectern Connection Panel

For proper functionality, the power cables for all the lectern components must be securely connected. Most power cables connect to the power bar inside the lectern. However, you must also ensure that the cable from the power bar is connected to a room outlet that is on a 110V/120V 60 Hz circuit, which is the standard in North America.

NOTE: The Sympodium L250 interactive lectern is certified for use in North America only.

Locating the Door KeysThe lectern comes with two sets of door keys, one in the Starter Kit and the other on the side of the lectern connection panel housing (see Figure 17). You can continue to store these keys in this unsecure but hidden location, or you can move the keys to a more convenient and secure spot.

Figure 17: The Door Key Location

Moving the Lectern You can easily move the lectern. When you do so, you must unlock the lectern casters, which are usually locked to keep the cabinet stationary. To unlock the casters, pull up the tab in the middle of each wheel (see Figure 18). You can then push the lectern to another position and you can lock the wheels again to prevent further movement.

When you move the lectern, make sure you don’t strain or pull out the cables that connect the L250 to various room outlets. If you need to, disconnect the cables, move the lectern, and then reconnect them.

Figure 21: The Control Panel Location

Figure 22: The Labels on the Control Panel

NOTE: If a control panel LED flashes, that source isn’t connected through a USB cable. For sources with video connections only (such as a document camera), this is normal. However, for a computer source, a flashing LED indicates a communication problem, so you should check the USB cables and connections. If this doesn’t solve the problem, contact SMART Technical Support. See page 35 for the contact information.

IMPORTANT If you display a video image from a source that isn’t a computer, you can’t use the interactive stylus or the annotation tools in SMART Board software unless you route the video through a video capture card in the computer. This is because you must have the SMART Board tools running to use the annotation tools. However, if you connect a video annotation device, such as a video marker, to your video device, you can use this device to annotate.

Cleaning and Maintaining the L250

This section explains how to clean and care for the Sympodium L250 interactive lectern, including:

• cleaning the L250 (this page)

• changing the stylus tip (page 25)

• adjusting the joints on the mounting arm for the interactive pen display (page 26)

When you’re not using the L250, turn it off so you conserve the life of the interactive pen display and prevent image ghosting. Also, you should install a screen saver and use the power management features of your operating system.

Cleaning the L250To keep the L250 looking good, you should periodically dust the cabinet using a soft, dry cloth. If necessary, slightly moisten the cloth with water.

The stylus is a sealed unit that contains electronics, but no batteries. If you attempt to open the stylus, you will damage the electronics, making the stylus unusable. To clean the stylus, use a soft cloth with a mild detergent, such as dishwashing liquid that’s diluted with water.

You should clean a heavily used interactive pen display once a week to maintain optimal clarity. To clean the pen display surface, wipe it with a soft, dry cloth. If necessary, slightly moisten the cloth with water. Apply only light pressure and do not make the surface wet.

CAUTIONDon’t use glass cleaner, paint thinner, benzene, alcohol or any other solvent to clean the pen display.

CAUTIONDon’t immerse the stylus in any liquid.

Troubleshooting

Most problems with the L250 are the result of improper cable connections, so if you’re having difficulty, make sure you’ve firmly inserted all the connectors into their connection ports. If the problem persists, use the information in this section to:

• check the power (this page)

• check the status LEDs for the interactive pen display (page 29)

• correct image problems (page 30)

• correct computer control and writing problems (page 31)

• correct problems with the X-Port 40 unit and the control panel (page 31)

This section also includes a table of common symptoms and possible resolutions (page 31). However, if none of the suggestions in this section solves the problem, call SMART Technical Support using the contact information on page 35.

Checking the PowerDuring normal operation, the power indicator (LED) on the interactive pen display glows blue when the interactive pen display is on.

If the power indicator isn’t lit, either your interactive pen display is off, or there’s a problem with the lectern’s power distribution system. In this case, check that the power bar light is on and, if it isn’t, press the power button switch. Also, check the circuit breaker and reset it if necessary by pressing the button on the side of the power bar. Then check that you’ve firmly and correctly connected:

• all the power cables to the power bar inside the lectern

• the main power cable to the room’s power outlet

• the connections between the control panel and the X-Port 40 unit

• the power cables to the device (you may have to follow the appropriate cable through the cable channels to its connection port)

Page 37: User’s Guide - Smart Technologiesdownloads.smarttech.com/media/products/sym/guides/l250... · 2020-04-02 · ii Important Information Other Precautions For proper usage of the L250,

If the power LED is blue but you can’t see an image on the display, read the section entitled Correcting Image Problems on page 30. If the power indicator is orange, the pen display isn’t receiving a video signal. Check that:

• the correct video device is selected on the control panel

• the video device is on and not in sleep or power management mode

• the video cable is correctly connected to the interactive pen display

• the video cable is correctly connected to the X-Port 40 unit and to the video device

• the video cable isn’t bent or broken and doesn’t have bent or broken pins in either connector. If you’re using a video cable adaptor, check those connections as well.

Checking the Status of the Interactive Pen DisplayWhen you touch the stylus to the pen display, the status indicator (see Figure 32) turns blue. If it doesn’t, check that:

• the active device is a computer that’s running SMART Board software version 8.1.1 or later

• all the USB cables are properly connected to the computer, the X-Port 40 unit and the interactive pen display

• you are using the correct stylus (not one from a different type or brand of display)

• the SMART Board tools are running on the computer

If the LED is orange, the USB cable or the video cable for that source or the interactive pen display isn’t properly connected. Check that both ends of these cables are properly connected. If they are, check that there isn’t a problem with the cable itself.

If the status light still doesn’t turn blue and your interactive pen display isn’t responding to a touch with the pen, call Technical Support. (See page 35 for contact details.)

Correcting Image ProblemsIf you don’t see an image on the interactive pen display, check that the interactive pen display is turned on and that you have properly connected the power, video and USB cables. Also check that:

• you have selected the correct input source on the control panel

• the computer isn’t set to a resolution that’s higher than 1024 x 768 pixels

• the computer isn’t set to a refresh rate that’s higher than 70 Hz (or 75 Hz for resolutions lower than 1024 x 768 pixels)

• the contrast, brightness and backlight controls of the interactive pen display are properly set. If necessary, reset these settings (page 21).

• the computer’s video card is compatible with the interactive pen display. To do this, connect the computer to another monitor and verify that the image displays properly. Read the information that came with your video card or your computer for troubleshooting details.

When you use the interactive pen display, you may notice some anomalies in the image appearance. These irregularities aren’t necessarily indications that the pen display is defective, as the following anomalies are common to Thin Film Transistor (TFT) liquid-crystal display screens:

• A very small number of pixels are permanently illuminated, not illuminated at all or show an incorrect color

• The image appears striped or it flickers

• A moiré or pooling pattern (an irregular, wavy geometric pattern) appears temporarily when you’re writing on the pen display. This pattern is the result of hard, downward pressure on the pen display surface.

Figure 33: A Moiré Pattern

• An afterimage remains for a short time. This happens when an image is displayed on the pen display for a long period of time without the screen being refreshed. The longer the image remains on the screen, the longer the afterimage will last and the darker it will be. This is normal and won’t damage the pen display. However, you should use your computer’s power management tools to preserve the life of your pen display. Set the power management options so the pen display turns off when it’s not in use. If you don’t have power management available, install a screen saver that uses a blank screen.

Correcting Computer Control and Writing ProblemsFor you to use the interactive pen display, the computer must be running the SMART Board tools. You’ll know they’re running if you can see the SMART Board icon in the system tray or the Dock.

If the cursor doesn’t accurately follow the movement of the stylus, try orienting the interactive pen display (see page 22).

With SMART Board software, you can customize the electronic ink that flows from your stylus. If the electronic ink doesn’t appear as you expect, check the pen settings. To do this, open the SMART Board Control Panel, go to the Pen Tray tab, and check the settings for each pen tool button on the console by pressing the corresponding pen tool buttons on the Pen Tray tab. However, if you can’t change any of these settings, check that you have edit rights for the application. Refer to your operating system’s documentation for details.

NOTE: The Pen Tray tab of the SMART Board Control Panel shows four pens, but the interactive pen display only uses the first three.

Correcting Problems with the X-Port 40 Unit and the Control PanelProblems with the X-Port 40 unit are usually caused by improper connections. Check all the input and output connections, as well as the power connections at the lectern power bar. If your control panel doesn’t work correctly, check the serial cable that connects it to the X-Port 40 unit. You can do this by trying another straight-through RS-232 serial cable.

If you see blinking LEDs on the Control Panel, check the USB connections and cables. If you’re using an input source that doesn’t have a USB connection, such as a document camera, it is normal for that control panel LED to blink when the document camera is the selected source.

If you’re having problems with the audio, check your cables and connections. Also check that the power cable is connected to the unbalanced-to-balanced audio converter.

Troubleshooting Summary Table Use the following table to solve a problem with the L250. Keep in mind that any computer that you use with the L250 must be running the SMART Board tools for the pen display to be touch sensitive. The SMART Board tools are running if you can see the SMART Board icon in the system tray or the Dock. If the remedies listed here don’t correct the problem, contact SMART Technical Support (see page 35 for the contact numbers).
