Read and/or listen to the book of your choice.Ask your child:

Is this a fiction (story) or nonfiction (real) text? How do you know? What does the boy shout out? How do you think the people felt? Why does the boy laugh at the people?What happens when he tries to trick the people again? What happens at the end?

Remind your child of some strategies they could use to decode new words: sounding out, using the pictures for clues or reading the rest of the sentence and come back to the word(s) you found tricky.

Ask your child:Is this fiction (a story) or a non-fiction (real) text? How do you know? Who is Daisy? Why does mum want to sell her? Why do both the man and mum think Jack is silly? Do you agree with them? Explain your answer.How does Jack make the giant happy?Where do you think the giant’s beanstalk went? Can you describe this place to your grown up?

Ask your child:Is this a fiction (a story) or a non-fiction (real) text? How do you know? What is another word for animals that are active during the night?What do you notice about these animals’ eyes and ears? Why do you think that is?Can you find out about some more nocturnal animals? The Three Little Pigs

The story today is called a traditional tale. A traditional tale is a story that was first told a long time ago and is told over and over again until everyone has heard it at least once. A traditional tale sends us a message.The message in this story is ‘Take your time and do your best’.

Before you read/listen to the story what characters can you see on the cover? Read the title with your grown up.When you finished listening, talk about the message the story sends us. Why is the message telling us to slow down?.Can you write a sentence about the message?
