How good to gather as friends in faith!
Welcome to this time of praise and prayer, word and worship. Amen.

DEATHS: Our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Florence Thomas, Tammy Buess’s aunt,
who was called home on Tuesday, October 10; and Susan Reynolds who was called home on Thursday,

FELLOWSHIP TIME
Everyone is invited to enjoy the fellowship and some light refreshments (doughnuts, coffee, juice)
immediately after the 8:00 a.m. Sunday service in the cafeteria.
SUNDAY ADULT CLASSES (9:15-10:15 A.M.)
NOAH led by Pastor French in the cafeteria (Room P212). The biblical account of Noah and the Flood
is one in which water is literally all over the place. What are we to make of this water story? What
message does it send about how God chooses to use water? Does it have any relation to the Church
today? These are the types of questions we will ask of the story in Genesis 6-9, a story that is full of
warning and consolation.
LUTHERANISM 101 led by Pastor Heckert in the fellowship hall (Room F202). This adult
information (new member) class will introduce you to Christian doctrine as revealed by God through
Scripture. Pastor will explain the essentials of our faith: what the Church believes and what it means
to live “in Christ.” If you would like to brush up on your fundamentals of the faith and meet some
potential new members, we would love to have you join us!
A DEEPER LOOK moderated by Grace Gillespie in Room P202 (green classroom). This group
discusses the Bible lessons (pericopes) which are read in church each Sunday. You are invited every
Sunday, but will not be lost if you miss a Sunday. This is a casual class with lots of interaction. We
pray for each other and care for each other. Join us today and every Sunday.
SUNDAY SCHOOL (9:15-10:15 A.M.)
Preschool 2s & 3s will meet in Room P204 (yellow classroom) and can be picked up by parents there.
All other grades will start in the sanctuary for the opening of Sunday school, go to their individual rooms
(listed below), and then will end up in the cafeteria for pickup:
Pre-K - Kindergarten: P205 (orange classroom)
1st-2nd Grade: P101 (kindergarten classroom)
3rd-5th Grade: P104 (2nd grade classroom)
6th-8th Grade: P112 (library)
High school: F104 (conference room)

DO YOU PLAY THE PIANO? Fellowship Communion is in need of a piano player the last
Wednesday of each month for our 10:30 a.m. service. You are welcome to stay for lunch and games/
prizes after the service. If you could fill this need or be put on a list of available players, please call
Nola Hecht in the church office at 423-1616 or contact Janet Clark 464-6015, [email protected].
HAVE YOU SEEN THESE? The Altar Guild is searching for some missing altar linens. Please check
to see if you have these: a fine linen veil with a cross embroidery, small linens used on the tray. Many
of these are rectangular and have a cross in the middle, some are larger squares with a cross in the
middle of the lower edge. If found, please return these items to the church office. Thank you!
LIFE THOUGHTS IN THE CHURCH YEAR: Life Thoughts are designed to help pastors and
congregations see the church year through the lens of the sanctity of human life; they are based on the
appointed readings from Lutheran Service Book. October 22 – Since God created humankind in His
image, their fate belongs in His hands above Caesar’s (Matthew 22:21). Life issues are more than just
private or political – they are matters of the heart, to which the Gospel of Jesus Christ speaks most
directly and effectively. They must remain part of the Church’s conversation for the sake of persons
struggling with them. Almighty God, impart unto us ears that rejoice to hear Your whole counsel and
tongues that proclaim it with courage and compassion. Amen.
MUSIC DEPARTMENT FUNDRAISER: The St. James
Music Department Butter Braid Fundraiser has started!
“What are butter braids?” you ask. They are large pastries
with fruit, cream cheese, cinnamon, or chocolate filling.
They are so delicious and easy to bake! They store in the
freezer until you want a tasty breakfast or treat anytime.
All Messenger and Jr. High Choir and Band Students will
be taking orders now until November 1. Our delivery
date is Friday, November 16, just in time for Thanksgiving.
If you have any questions, please contact Amy Schoon at
427-8134 or by e-mail at [email protected].
40 DAYS FOR LIFE CAMPAIGN - NOW THROUGH NOVEMBER 5: What is 40 Days for Life?
It is not a protest, nor is it political. It is sustained prayer in public. We pray, fast, and do community
outreach. Why? Because it works! Women’s hearts are touched when they see people praying for them
and their babies. During 40 Days vigils, up to 75% of abortion appointments are no-shows. Abortion
workers have had conversion of heart and quit their industry. We also offer resources and help to
pregnant women in crisis, giving them an option of life for their baby. Did you know that 79% of post-
abortive women said that they did not receive counseling on their other options?
Do YOU want to be a part of this life-giving work? Please join me. To find out more, sign up to
receive information by creating a login at https://40daysforlife.com/local-campaigns/lafayette/.
Signing up for the 40 Days for Life just puts you on the mailing list. You have time to learn about 40
Days, pray, and consider if it is right for you. Let’s give hope to pregnant women in crisis and to our
community. Contact: Patricia Cole at (331) 302-0213 or [email protected]. Check us out on
facebook at https://www.facebook.com/events/839754796182369/.
YOUTH PAINTBALL OUTING - 7TH GRADE THRU HIGH SCHOOL: Do you love intense,
adrenaline-inducing sports? Join us, then, as we ring in the 500th anniversary of the Reformation with
paintballing revelry! No equipment? No worries; the rental of gear for the day, in addition to 500
paintballs, is included in the pricing! We are looking for each player to kick in $20 to help with the cost.
In return for this financial contribution, you will be entered into a raffle to win one of two paintball
gear packages TO KEEP! If interested, please sign up on the sheets outside Pastor Heckert’s office
between now and October 22. If we get more than 30 people, we get a $10 discount per person! There
will be a basic informational meeting following the late church service on Sunday, October 22! Hope to see you there!
QUILTERS: Quilters will be meeting on Monday, October 23 in the fellowship hall from 8:30 a.m.
until noon. Come join us!
ALTAR GUILD: Our next meeting is set for Monday, October 23 at 6:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall.
We are asking those who serve in September and October to be responsible for setup and desserts; all
other Altar Guild members are asked to bring soup or salad. Ever thought about joining the Altar Guild?
We need more helping hands! Each lady on the guild only serves for a few weeks a year. It takes
approximately one hour to set up and clean up for the weekend’s services. Please pray about joining us.
If you have any questions, please contact Judy Nixon at (765) 742-5981. Thank you to all our Altar
Guild ladies for all your faithful work!
RING IN THE REFORMATION: On Reformation Sunday - October 29 immediately following the
10:30 service, our church bell will be rung 95 times in honor of the 500th anniversary of the posting of
the 95 Theses. This is a big job of bell pulling! We are looking for a maximum of 10-15 strong healthy
adult members (16 years old and up) who wish to take part in this historic event. Each participant must
be willing and able to ring the bell exactly 5 or exactly 10 times and transfer the rope to the next ringer
smoothly. A special certificate will be presented to each participant as a keepsake of the event!
Since the church building is in need of major repairs, we are also using this event as a fundraiser. We
are asking a contribution of either $50 dollars for five pulls or $100 for ten pulls to participate in this
unique experience. Contact the church office to reserve your “pulls.” Come join the fun and help to
meet our church’s needs with your contribution at the same time, while participating in this once in a
lifetime historic moment.
The rest of the congregation is invited to gather on the steps in front of the Cincinnati Street
entrance as the bell is being rung, where one of the pastors will symbolically “nail” a copy of the
original 95 Theses on the church door and lead us in a prayer of thanksgiving. Let’s let the
community know, we have something to celebrate! Help us ring in the 500th anniversary of
Reformation Day!

SEEKING ARMED FORCES INFORMATION: The Board Of Evangelism wants to create a bulletin
board display in the cafeteria with pictures of the sons and daughters of our congregation that are
currently serving in the U.S. armed forces. The Board is asking the families of the St. James service
members to give the pictures and other information (branch of service, rank and postal address) to Nolita
Freel or leave it at the church office. In addition to posting the pictures, the Board of Evangelism will
also mail church bulletins, Portals of Prayer, birthday cards (if we have their birthdate) and other
encouragements from their church family at St. James. The Board looks forward to recognizing and
encouraging the sons and daughters of St. James as they serve our country in the armed forces.
OPPORTUNITES TO SERVE: The congregation is in need of volunteers to fill some positions as
follows:

the pastors if you want to volunteer or have questions about these opportunities to serve the church and
our Lord. It would be great to have these position filled by the next Voters’ Assembly meeting which is

that) a baby, and before that a fetus in a woman’s body.” C.S. Lewis in Mere Christianity
STEWARDSHIP GENEROSITY THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Matthew 22:21 – Then he said to
them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
So what is Jesus saying? Doesn’t everything belong to God? Yes – and God has a place for everything.
Some of what He gives us goes to Caesar. Some must come back to the work of His Church. And some
goes to support the families He has given us. All belongs to God – and he has work for us to do with
what He has given us in the Home, in the Church, and in Society.

Revelation 14:6–7
Romans 3:19–28
John 8:31–36
The Son of God Has Set Us Free from Sin and Death by His Grace
“Wisdom is justified by her deeds” (Matthew 11:19), and the true wisdom of God, Christ Jesus,
the incarnate Son, justifies us by His deeds. He prepares His way by the preaching of
repentance, but He has suffered the violence of the Law and voluntarily handed Himself over to
violent men, in order that we may eat and drink with Him in His Kingdom and “remain in the
house forever” (John 8:35). He is “a friend of tax collectors and sinners” (Matthew 11:18–19),
and He has rescued us by His grace from the slavery of sin and death. By the proclamation of
His eternal Gospel “to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and
people” (Revelation 14:6), “the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the
law” (Romans 3:21), “that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in
Jesus” (Romans 3:26). And by the hearing of that Gospel of Christ Jesus, “whom God put
forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith” (Romans 3:25), “you will know
the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31–32).

St. James Lutheran School With God as our foundation, we educate & equip for service, for Christ, the mind, heart, and spirit of today’s 21st Century learner.
School Theme 2017-2018 – Micah 6:8—Act Justly. Love Mercy. Walk Humbly. For 166 years of ministry at St. James Lutheran School, our focus has and will always remain on us teaching about a changeless Christ (our Rock) to a changing world. It is a constant theme for our school and all Lutheran schools around the world. No matter what happens in our own lives or our world, we rejoice that our hope is secure in Jesus Christ through His death on the Cross and resurrection. God calls us to live out our school theme daily: to do what is right, to show love and mercy toward one other, and to recognize that everything is a gift from God! Grandparent’s Day comes to St. James on Friday, October 27 to kick off the Reformation weekend. We celebrate our Lutheran heritage with our family heritage on this day. Thank you, God, for the gift of family! Culver’s Night is this Tuesday, October 24 from 5-8pm. St. James Lutheran School & Operation Christmas Child: Last year, St. James partnered with Operation Christmas Child to provide shoeboxes full of toys, gifts, and supplies for boys and girls around the world who were in areas of war and poverty. In our 2nd year, we provided 78 shoeboxes that were sent over to Columbia and Botswana. We had such a wonderful response from the students and families that we are going to do it again this year with a goal of 90. During the month of October, we are collecting items to fill these shoeboxes. We will pack and prepare to ship during the 1st week of November. Classrooms decide on providing items for either a boy or girl, with age ranges from 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Items should be brought to your student’s classroom. Here are some ideas of what to pack (please remember not to bring in any toys or items that have anything to do with war or military)…
Scarves, mittens, stocking hats, etc.
Small sunglasses, hair accessories, kids necklace, watch, etc.
Simple toys, small stuffed animals, etc.
Tooth brush, comb, brush, bars of soap, wash cloth, small deodorant, socks
Slinky, yo-yo, jump rope, small toy item, etc.
Pencils, pens, small activity books, crayons, coloring books, etc.
Simple games, small puzzles, etc.
Monetary donations—each shoe box costs $9 to send Shoeboxes are packed in regards to boy or girl boxes. Everyone did a wonderful job with this last year. I hope we all can do this again so that all children can have a wonderful Christmas this year!
