These institutions establish learning

outcomes for programs & courses and

conduct outcome assessment.



Outcome

assessment's

findings help

educators

determine towhat extentstudents are

learning.



However, outcome assessment doesn't

tell us

students are or are not learning.

WHY



In itself, outcome assessment also

doesn't tell us

we can help students improve.

HOW



Unless we move

beyond the

outcome data, any

adjustments made

to help students is

just throwing

spaghetti at a wall

to see what sticks.

Just start small.





Set up smallerscale studies:

Teaching/learning modality?Course length?Class size?

Use individual courses

Use readilyavailable data

Explore what might be affecting

student learning.



Be sure to build confounding variables

into your study, such as student

characteristics.



Big data brings big challenges,but also big opportunities to
