Using Division Profiles to inform planning
Division Profiles
• First issue of the Division Profiles was produced in July 2009.
• They are produced twice yearly• Provide an overview of key health indicators• Practical snapshot and means of monitoring
trends
Division Profiles
GPQ draws the information from a number of publicly available data sources, such as:
• Medicare Australia
• Queensland Health
• Public Health Information Development Unit (PHIDU) at the University of Adelaide
• Primary Health Care Research & Information Service (PHCRIS) at Flinders University, South Australia
• Australian Childhood Immunisation Register (ACIR)
Division Profiles
The information in the profiles has been grouped under
headings that reflect areas of focus and activity in primary
health care. • Population demographics (potential demand for health
services)• Primary care workforce (availability of primary care
workforce and services)• Service utilisation (volume and use of a range of health
services)• Disease prevention (prevention of chronic disease and
the maintenance of population health)
Division Profiles
• Chronic disease management (prevalence of chronic conditions including activity associated with the management of patients with chronic conditions)
• Uptake of national incentives (Medicare item numbers and Federal Government incentives)
• National performance indicators for Divisions (summary and analysis of division reports to the Department of Health & Ageing for the Divisions Program)
Division Profiles
Queensland Profile• Shows aggregated data for Queensland and provides
some comparisons to other States and Territories.
Medicare Local Profiles
• AGPN recently commissioned the Public Health Information Development Unit (PHIDU), University of Adelaide to develop the Medicare Local population health profiles.
• The baseline profiles provide some available data sets mapped to the new geographic boundaries for Medicare Locals.
• At this stage the Medicare Local profiles are purely data sets
• Includes aspects of the demography, socioeconomic and health statuses, and health service use of the population
Medicare Local Profiles
• The data is presented for each Medicare Local and for each Statistical Local Area (SLA), or part SLA, within Medicare Locals.
• Next step, GPQ intends to take the Medicare Local Population Health Profile data – and present in a user-friendly format

Using Division Profiles to inform planning
The Division profiles are designed to be accessible and useable documents that can assist with:• Needs assessments• Service Planning• Reporting • Evaluation• Funding submissions • Proposal writing
It is hoped that this information will add to the knowledge base and ultimately improve the planning of primary health care services to respond to local community needs.
Using Division Profiles to inform planning
The profiles will be available on GPQ’s website (under the secure area) in the near future.
For more information or queries about the Division Profiles please contact Julia Leigh, Team Leader – Programs at [email protected]
