What the heck Szelag? I barely know pronouns. WHY ARE WE DOING THIS??

Well, it’s because in Spanish ‘Gustar’ is a special verb.

In English, we translate it as ‘to like’ but in Spanish it really means ‘to be pleasing’.

And when it is translated as ‘to be pleasing’, we have to tell WHO it is pleasing TO.

That’s where those indirect object pronouns come from.

Page 5: Using Gustar Avancemos Level 1. Help me fill in the grid with Spanish pronouns.. Yo Tú Él, Ella, Usted Nosotros/as Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes X.

So this is how they are translated…

me

te

nos

X

le les

‘to me’

‘to you (inf)’

‘to him/her/you (form)’

‘to us’

X

‘to them/to y’all’

Page 7: Using Gustar Avancemos Level 1. Help me fill in the grid with Spanish pronouns.. Yo Tú Él, Ella, Usted Nosotros/as Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes X.

So now we know ‘to whom’ we are referring, right?

Now we want to add emphasis…To express that something is important or express surprise to someone we add a + (a noun or pronoun) before the INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUN.

A mi, me … A nosotros, nos …

A ti, te …

A él/Juan, le …

A ella/Ana, le …

A usted, le …

A ellos, les …

A ellas, les …

A ustedes, les …

Page 8: Using Gustar Avancemos Level 1. Help me fill in the grid with Spanish pronouns.. Yo Tú Él, Ella, Usted Nosotros/as Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes X.

Now we can add conjugated Gustar

(A mi), me gusta … (A nosotros), nos gusta …

(A ti), te gusta …

A él/Juan, le gusta …

A ella/Ana, le gusta …

A usted, le gusta …

A ellos, les gusta …

A ellas, les gusta …

A ustedes, les gusta …

In third person singular and plural, you have to let me know who you are talking about. Use the person’s name/s whenever possible.

Final step!

(A mi), me gusta correrI like to run/Running is

pleasing to me.

(A nosotros), nos gusta correr

We like to run/Running is pleasing to us.

(A ti), te gusta correrYou like to run/Running is

pleasing to you.

A él/Juan, le gusta correrHe/Juan likes to

run/Running is pleasing to him

A ella/Ana, le gusta correr

She/Ana likes to run/Running is pleasing to

her.A usted, le gusta correrYou like to run/Running is

please to you.

A ellos, les gusta correrThey like to run/Running is pleasing to them.

A ellas, les gusta correrThey like to run/Running is pleasing to them.A ustedes, les gusta

correrY’all like to run/Running is pleasing to y’all.

Now we can add a verb at the end! Since we technically already conjugated ‘gustar’ to become ‘gusta’, the next verb is NEVER conjugated. Leave it in the infinitive (infinitive means endless ways it could be conjugated !!

Rewrite these sentences to include the Indirect Object Pronouns and gustar

A ustedes, estudiar.

A ti, montar en bicicleta.

A Alicia y a Miguel, aprender el español.

A mi, escuchar música.

A usted, trabajar.

A nosotros, nos gusta comer pizza.

You need paper & a book

Open to page 43. Look at exercise 13.

Next, look at the model (modelo) In the model you see: a Luisa / preparar la comida and a frowny face Frowny means that Luisa doesn’t like it. You need to write a sentence that says she doesn’t like it.

The next part of the model shows you how to do that. No le gusta preparar la comida.

Your turn…write sentences for #1-6 on your paper.

Page 12: Using Gustar Avancemos Level 1. Help me fill in the grid with Spanish pronouns.. Yo Tú Él, Ella, Usted Nosotros/as Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes X.

On the same paper… Take a look at exercise 14-¿Qué les gusta

hacer? (This means ‘What do they like to do?’

Look at the model. You have a picture of a girl named Teresa and she’s reading book. Step 1 is to write a question. A: ¿Qué le gusta hacer a Teresa?

Step 2 is to write an answer. B: Le gusta leer un libro.

Questions about what you are doing? Go ahead!!
