How LinkedIn Is So Much More Than Just A Site For CVs
• Why use LinkedIn?
• The importance of your email address
• Step-by-step and ‘hands-on’ setting up an amazing profile
• Public profiles and why they’re important
• Finding, making and managing connections
• Getting your settings right
• Finding and using LinkedIn Groups
• LinkedIn InMails and paid options
• Using recommendations and endorsements
• Using LinkedIn for job searching or advertising
• Advertising on LinkedIn
• Time management techniques on LinkedIn
• + Many more hints, tips and techniques
Coming Up Today …
How I Use LinkedIn
• I’ve been a member of LinkedIn since January 31
2011
• I have a very different personal use policy for LinkedIn
in comparison with Facebook, Twitter and G+
• I use it to connect with people that I know personally,
or to nurture business connections with people that I
want to know better
• I avoid LinkedIn for ‘chatter’ ... I use it in a very
targeted way for business
• You’ll need to decide how you want to use it and
devise a personal strategy for use (ie make lots
of connections, target big customers etc)
Why Should I Even Bother About Social Media?
1. Social media gives you an instant web presence … no cost, no webmasters, no tech! So if you have no budget and no web site, using social media you can get your business online – for free – in a matter of minutes
2. Social media gets you on mobile immediately - no cost, no webmasters, no tech! So if you have a web site – and you can’t afford the technical work that will need to make it mobile and tablet friendly – you can solve that problem instantly using a social media channel
3. Social media gives you instant and powerful SEO (search engine optimization). Because they’re the world’s most heavily trafficked sites, you get to ride on their coat tails – no SEO budget required That means that you can get found in the search engines fast!
Which Sites Have The Most Web Traffic?
LinkedIn is the
13th most
popular site on
the web … in the
universe!
Gives you exposure to people hunting for products or services or jobs
Gets introductions
Displays recommendations from others for you and your business
Facilitates active group and industry related discussion
Send messages and invitations to those in your network and to other group members
Highly targeted LinkedIn advertising
Asking and answering industry based questions
Why LinkedIn?
Why Use LinkedIn?
1. Promote your business or company
2. Find new leads/prospects/customers
3. Increase your web site traffic
4. Build a professional community in your industry
5. Professional networking
6. Create strong personal branding/credibility
7. Social recruiting
8. Find a new job
9. Advertise
10.Target specific contacts
Any more to add?
Which Email Address?
It is better to use an online Gmail, Yahoo!, Microsoft Online (Hotmail or the
newer Outlook.com address), or similar permanent address that you create
online.
Having an address on your own private domain is also fine if you don’t plan on
changing your domain name soon.
If you are required to create a LinkedIn account by your employer, make sure
up front that you will own the account when you leave the company.

It's important to add all email addresses that someone might use to
connect with you on LinkedIn. If someone sends an invitation to an
email address you haven't listed, you could get an error message or
accidentally create a second account when you try to accept.

A Word About SEO
• These are the
LinkedIn results if
you just search for
‘Paul Teague’
• This is called
‘LinkedIn SEO’
(Search Engine
Optimisation), the
more precise your
info, the better
chance you have
of being found!
• This is the only
result for a
LinkedIn search
of ‘Paul Teague
Carlisle’
• The more
comprehensively
you complete
your profile, the
better you will be
found in LinkedIn
A Word About SEO
Can People Find Me?
How easy is it to find you online?
Thinking in terms of keywords helps to get you
found on the web!
Practical Exercise
Think about the keywords that you need to use in your own
LinkedIn profile:
• What words best describes your business, niche or
expertise
• What terms would people need to come up with to find you
online?
• Look at the profiles of other people in your industry – what
keywords do they use?
• Compile a list of 5 keywords
Professional Tip
• I check ‘Notify your network?’ to ‘Off’ as I think that this looks
unprofessional, it can make LinkedIn more like Facebook at time
• If you have this switched on, every time you make a profile change it
will notify your contacts – it can get a bit wearing when somebody is
updating their profile!
• Switch it on manually if you have a new job or there is a significant
change in your business that you really want your contacts to see
LinkedIn Banner
Headers were rolled out to Premium customers first,
they’ve now being rolled out to everybody
My Tips …
1. Choose connections with care – never connect with somebody
who doesn’t have a properly completed profile – what would be the
value of that to your business?
2. Seek meaningful connections … are they local to you, related to
your industry, people who you have worked with before, people you
have done business with?
3. Keep your contacts list lean - remember that if you make a
connection that you regret, or just think better of, they are easily
deleted!
4. Embrace LinkedIn’s suggestions … it’s a very clever site, it will
make amazing connections for you, so embrace it rather
than cursing it
LinkedIn Profile Essentials
1. Be authentic (professional photo, use full real name)
2. Be comprehensive (use all of the space that LinkedIn
provides for you)
3. Be branded (use the headline and summary areas to
expose your strengths, expertise, awards or
experience)
4. Be searchable (make sure that relevant keywords
associated with your brand, experience, profession,
and industry are included in your profile)
5. Be professional (this is not Facebook!)

• Non-members
have to join
LinkedIn to see
your full profile
• This is why the
SEO element is
so important – get
that right and
anybody can find
you

LinkedIn Connections
• Seek meaningful
connections
• It’s a quality, not
a numbers game
LinkedIn will never stop suggesting
connections and new links for you
… choose wisely though!
Connecting
You can’t just connect to anybody! You need to
have some sort of link to them (I’ll show other
techniques later if you don’t have a connection)
Connecting
… and you receive an email when somebody
wants to connect with you.
Note the ‘View profile’ button – if your profile is
rubbish, how likely are they to connect with you?
Tip: Delete A Connection
• Simply remove them from your contacts list
• Do this regularly – if somebody doesn’t add
any value, delete them!
• Always be intolerant of bad behaviour on
social media – just remove the contact
• You can also block people …
Tip: Block A Connection
• Navigate to the
person’s profile page
(just search for them
by name), click the
dropdown menu,
then select ‘Block or
report’
• There’s no need to
report somebody, you
may just wish to
block them for
privacy reasons
• You can also remove
a connection this way
too
A Matter Of Degrees
1st-degree - People you're directly connected to because you have accepted
their invitation to connect, or they have accepted your invitation. You'll see
a 1st degree icon next to their name in search results and on their profile. You
can contact them by sending a message on LinkedIn.
2nd-degree - People who are connected to your 1st-degree connections. You'll
see a 2nd degree icon next to their name in search results and on their profile.
You can send them an invitation by clicking Connect or contact them through an
InMail or an introduction.
3rd-degree - People who are connected to your 2nd-degree connections. You'll
see a 3rd degree icon next to their name in search results and on their profile
You’ll be really surprised to see how you’re connected already
to many business people who you want to get to know
Endorsement FAQs
1. Your 1st level contacts are asked to endorse you
when they login (not all the time!)
2. You can retract endorsements or opt out from them
3. You can add any skills to this section
4. Accumulating a high number of endorsements for
a skill adds credibility to your profile
5. You’ll also be notified by email when you receive
an endorsement
LinkedIn Endorsements
Scroll down to
the Skills &
Expertise section
of a connection's
profile.
Notice how
horrible those
greyed out faces
look?
You get an email
notification
allowing you to
add the
endorsements to
your profile (you
can remove them
and withdraw
them!)
LinkedIn Endorsements
This is how you
add a LinkedIn
endorsement to
your profile when
you get an email
notification
LinkedIn Endorsements
LinkedIn Endorsements
This is how
you control
your
endorsement
settings
Tip: Just list 10
x skills at first,
you’ll get a
nice square of
10x10
endorsements
quicker!
Giving Endorsements
• LinkedIn will prompt
you to do this
regularly
• I think that they’re
worthless unless
you actually know
the person or have
done business with
them in someway
• Regard them as
valuable social
proof – don’t throw
them away!
Instant Fame!
Known as
‘recommendations’
It can be hard work to get people in some industries to
write recommendations for you because they don’t ‘get’ or
value LinkedIn or social media = very frustrating!
LinkedIn Account Management
You can request a recommendation for any of the jobs
that you have listed in your profile, or manage a
recommendation that you have received already
LinkedIn Account Management
Try not to use these in a
scattergun way.
A great way to use them is
when you’ve done a
specific piece of work with
people ie a testimonial
after a training event

What Do You Actually Do On
Social Media?
I’ve given you a free copy
of my social media guide
on the resources link that
I’ll be giving you at the end
of the session
LinkedIn Groups
(Network Growth Strategy)
1. LinkedIn will allow you to join up to 50 Groups.
2. To increase and maximise the number of people you can reach – and
for them to be able to reach you aim to join the maximum of 50
groups (remember the connection levels!)
3. Join a mixture of big and established groups, groups in your locality,
alumni groups, groups related to your industry, professional
association groups if applicable and groups in your target market.
4. Beware! Don’t get daily or weekly updates from every group that you
join, it’ll drive you mad! Use the link at the bottom of every email
which allows you to alter the frequency of sending.
5. On a daily or weekly basis try to contribute to a group conversation ...
or if you’re feeling daring, why not start your own?
‘Big Fish Tip 1
InMails are trusted messages that you can send to anyone
on LinkedIn. Response guarantee: InMail credits are
returned if you don't get a reply within 7 days.
‘Big Fish Tip 2
Introductions let you contact members in your extended
network through the people you know. If you want to
contact someone who is two or three degrees away from
you, you can request an introduction through one of your
connections.
‘Big Fish Tip 3
LinkedIn Ads is a self-service, text-based
advertising product that allows advertisers to
reach a targeted professional audience of their
choosing.

full details in the search results, whether the
searcher is part of your network or not
LinkedIn On Mobile

mobile phone as an icon
• Touch the icon to launch
