CTWorks Assistive Technology

This presentation is intended to provide information about and how to use the assistive technology available in each of the CTWorks Career Centers. The information will be helpful to employers, job seekers, service providers and Career Center staff.

CTWorks Assistive Technology

Presentation team members include Michelle Laramie, Rehabilitation Technologist for the CT Board of Education and Services for the Blind, Arlene Lugo, Program Director of the Connecticut Tech Act for the Bureau of Rehabilitation Services of the CT Department of Social Services, Kathleen Marioni, Operations Coordinator for the CT Department of Labor, and Joyce Barcley, AVP Special Projects for The WorkPlace, Inc.

Using Scan and Read Pro

In this course you will learn about for Scan and Read Pro. By the end of this course you will be able to answer the following questions:

• What is Scan and Read Pro ?• Who would use this product? • What can it be used to do?• How are the major features used and configured?

What is Scan and Read Pro?

Scan and Read Pro works with a scanner to recognize print documents and reads the scanned results aloud. It also has a talking word processor with word prediction, It can make scanned or existing documents into MP3 or WAV audio files. Depending on what synthesizers are on the computer, documents may be read back in languages other than English. Scan and Read Pro comes with a male and female high quality voice from Cepstral in U.S. English. The Connecticut Department of Labor offices will also have a female Spanish language Cepstral voice (Marta) installed.

Who Benefits From Using Scan and Read Pro ?

• People who have difficulty reading printed or electronic material. • People who would benefit from their word processor speaking as they

type and/or the word they may want to type predicted. • People who are low vision can use this product either with ZoomText with its speech feature turned off or with the zoom features within Scan and Read Pro turned on. • Scan and Read Pro can be used to create audio files that someone totally blind or anyone else with a portable audio player might use.

Starting Scan and Read Pro

Start Scan and Read Pro by using the following:

• Double click the Scan and Read Pro program icon on your Windows desktop.  • In the Windows Start menu, choose Programs -> Premier AT -> Scan and Read Pro.

Scan and Read Pro Interface

• Scan and Read Pro User Interface is the Window that appears in the middle of the computer screen when the Scan and Read Pro program is started. • All Scan and Read Pro functions can be accessed through standard

menus or buttons.

Scanning a Document

• Place a document on the scanner.• Click on the Scan Button. • Make sure the scanner displayed

is the one you have.• Decide whether you want Text

Only or Text and Graphics.• Click the Scan Image Button.• Repeat with other pages until all

have been scanned. • Click the Process Button.

Using a Document Without Scanning

You can use many of the features of Scan and Read Pro without scanning. If there is a document in print or electronic it is easier and better to use the electronic document. Scan and Read Pro can open many common text and document formats.

•Press the Open Button.•A standard Windows Open dialog box appears.•Navigate to the location where the file is stored and press Open Button. •The file will appear ready to use.

Changing Reading Voice Settings

• Go to the Settings Menu.• Click on Select Voices.Select Voices.• Select any of the 3 Cepstral Voices (Marta is Spanish).• Adjust the Voice Rate by pulling the slider with the mouse.• Test the voice by clicking the Test Button.• Click OK.

Reading a Document

•Click the mouse on the desired starting point.•Click the Read Button.•Click the Stop Button to stop reading.•Use the Read Menu to access

more commands for document reading.

Changing Visual Settings

Scan and Read Pro allows for the visual display to be changed to improve

To enable and disable speech readability:

• Use the Reading Menu.• Use Reading Options. • Adjust the Font Color, Background Color and Zoom to suit user preferences.• Click OK.

Tracking Text As it is Read

Scan and Read Pro allows text to be highlighted and tracked as it is read. This helps people who may have difficulty keeping their place.

• Use the Reading Menu.• Use Reading Options. • Click the Tracking and Highlighting Tab.• Adjust the settings to suit user preferences.• Click OK.

Creating an MP3 File

• In the MP3 Menu, choose MP3 Create. • The Turn Text Into Audio dialog appears.• Type a file location and name.• Choose a Voice and Voice Rate. • Choose an Audio File Type (MP3).• Choose an MP3 Bit Rate (256). Smaller = lower quality but smaller size files.

Using Word Prediction Software

• In the Prediction menu choose Word Prediction.• Begin typing. Possible words will appear in a box on the screen. • Using Up Arrow and Down Arrow will read the choices.• Select a choice by double clicking it with the mouse or selecting the number using the keyboard.

Using Scan and Read Pro for Spanish

• When scanning, use the Scan Menu to choose Spanish as the recognition language• When choosing a Voice Setting for reading select Cepstral Marta.• When creating an audio file from a Spanish document, choose Cepstral Marta.• There is no word prediction for Spanish
