Two of the most commonly asked questions regarding social media for businesses are, ‘Should I use social media for my business?’ and, ‘Which social media network should my business use’? First, let’s review the facts. According to a 2015 Pew Research study, 85% of American adults are Internet users and 67% are Smartphone users. An earlier Pew study reported as of January 2014, 74% of online adults use social networking sites. If your business would like to reach potential customers using social media, it might make a lot of sense to be in the same space as 74% of adult online users. Once you have decided to move forward with social media, the next step is to determine which social media network or channel that makes sense for your business. Here is a review of four of the most popular social media networks.
Facebook is the most popular social media network today with 72% of online American adults as users. Facebook also has a broad spectrum of generational users. Here’s the breakdown of Facebook users as a percentage of online adults:
18-29: 82% 30-49: 79%
50-64: 64% 65+: 48%
Instagram is a fast-growing photo/video sharing network owned by Facebook with 28% of adult Internet users participating. The users of this platform (as a percentage of online Internet users) generally skew younger:
18-29: 55% 30-49: 28%
50-64: 11% 65+: 4%
Instagram can be used to create visual connections with your
customers and is often a supplement to other social network channels.
23% of all online adults are Twitter users. This is one of the social media networks that is more popular among men, specifically younger adults. Also noteworthy is that studies show that adult Internet users living in urban areas tend to be Twitter users over their suburban or rural counterparts. Twitter users, as a percentage of online adult Internet users:
18-29: 32% 30-49: 29%
50-64: 13% 65+: 6%
Twitter “tweets” are limited to 140 characters, and text-based posts are
more popular than visual content options. Businesses generally need to post more frequently on Twitter to increase visibility due to the real-time
nature of the feed.
The key to success in social media is to determine the right channel, the right strategy and commit the time to having a consistent presence. While social media is free, it still takes time. Make sure you have a strategy to manage your social media before you get started.
Using Social Media for Your Business
For businesses, Facebook has many benefits. It has robust audience
targeting capabilities with reporting and analysis information.
LinkedIn is a professional networking site that attracts 25% of adult online users. 64% of online adults who have college degrees are also LinkedIn users. According to this study, LinkedIn is the only social network to have more 30-49 yr old users than 18-29 year olds. Here is the breakdown of users:
18-29: 22% 30-49: 32%
50-64: 26% 65+: 12%
LinkedIn is more professional in nature, so the content for this
platform should include business-related information, professional
development, career opportunities, company information, etc.
