Using Spectral Color Libraries to Assure Brand Color
Consistency in Metal Decoration
ORIS Flex Pack +
Heiner Mueller – Sales Director Packaging – CGS GmbH
▪ First development started in 2010
▪ Cooperation with RolandDG, Japan
▪ First roll-out with hardware, inks & media Drupa 2012
▪ Proofing & prototyping for packaging is very demanding
▪ Packaging is just a general term for hundreds of
products and processes
▪ Currently over 500 installs, with around 50 in metal
packaging & decoration
ORIS Flex Pack – A Success Story
▪ Custom solution for all aspects of color-accurate
proofing/prototyping in the packaging and label industry
▪ ORIS XG gamut-extending inks
▪ Huge portfolio of specific 'packaging' media
▪ ORIS transfer film to print on original stock
▪ Additional option to create all kinds of
finishing effects:
▪ Embossing
▪ Spot varnishing
▪ Foil blocking etc.
ORIS Flex Pack Today
▪ Communicating color accurately across the production chain
▪ 'Can you make the lemon a bit lemonier'
▪ Accurate color reproduction
▪ No standards, different processes,
different substrates, different presses
▪ Insufficient means to describe color
▪ Process color reproduction in packaging
is bad, brand colors are worse
▪ There are only spot colors in metal deco
▪ A proof is communication in color
One of the Biggest Challenges in Packaging
▪ A brand-new holistic approach to cover
all digital color management needs
▪ Usually the first step is 'SunConsulting',
a complete site assessment leading to
a full report, including a digital
color management proposal
▪ How can brand color integrity be guaranteed across the entire
production chain? (Digital color specification & communication)
▪ Connection to common tools used throughout the supply chain
▪ 35 print process & substrate specific libraries
based on Sun Chemical ink
Library Building – A Unique Approach
▪ Due to the reflective nature of the substrate,
the building of the PantoneLIVE Metal Deco
library required a unique approach
compared to other libraries.
▪ All colors had to be physically created and
rolled out using Sun Chemical’s industry
leading laboratory processes.
▪ Color approval had to follow
X-Rite/Pantone’s strictly defined process
Digital Capture▪ Once the standard color has been created, approved and
captured, Pantone install this data into the relevant Metal Deco
PantoneLIVE digital library. These color matchings are then
known as 'Dependent Standards',
as opposed to the 'Master' Standard
Comparison & Alignment
▪ The library and prints are not just simple interpretations or
similar colors to PMS reference numbers, these colors and ink
rollouts are the Pantone Standard.
Communication of Digital Color
▪ PantoneLIVE enabled applications
▪ Available throughout the supply chain and production
infrastructure
Visualizing Digital Color – ORIS Flex Pack
▪ At any stage of the production process,
from design to production, there is the
need to color-accurately
reproduce/visualize a design based on
the PantoneLIVE Metal Deco library
▪ Consistent at any place and time
▪ Sun Chemical and CGS have teamed up to define a process
using the ORIS Flex Pack System to accurately reproduce all
colors of the Metal Deco library within the tightest tolerances
▪ The library will eventually consist of approx. 2,000 colors
(available as transparent and opaque versions)
▪ The process links the Metal Deco library to a color database
within ORIS Flex Pack
ORIS Flex Pack
▪ Complete system, consisting of special hardware, inks & media
▪ Based on the Roland VersaCAMM VSi series
▪ The printer is capable of printing metallic & white
▪ At the heart of ORIS Flex Pack is the
patented ORIS 4-D iterative color
management engine
▪ The software is fully compatable with CxF/4
spectral color data, has a color cloud connectivity
and connects to PantonLIVE libraries (needs license)
▪ First the printer ist calibrated to a master condition, which can
be duplicated on any Roland VSi printer with ORIS XG inks
▪ The level of opacity varies according to the
Pantone reference. First,a digital print was
created with varying levels of opacity. This was
then compared for the correct opacity by using
a spectral process to compare against the data
taken from the ink rollout
▪ A digital print was created in a “honeycomb”
format. The center color is surrounded by
iterations in shade and strength. The best match
was selected using again spectral measuring to
compare to the PantoneLIVE dependent library data
Digital Proofing Process
▪ Final refined colors can then be applied to the design
file to produce the full digital contract proof
▪ Color optimization is completed ONCE by
Sun Chemical for each Pantone shade.
This ensures color accuracy and consistency
across the PantoneLIVE Libraries
Digital Proofing Process
▪ The SunDigiProof can be printed locally or remotely using
the defined printer and set up conditions
The SunDigiProof (ORIS Flex Pack)
▪ The color database in the ORIS Flex Pack application
represents the 4,000 colors of the Sun Metal Deco library
▪ All colors can be reproduced within very tight tolerances
▪ Ink roll-outs will eventually be replaced by proof output
▪ The database is write-protected
▪ Light/dark (+/-) variants can be produced at the
touch of a botton
▪ ORIS Flex Pack also includes all Pantone,
HKS and other standard libraries
▪ Custom brand colors can be added by the user
