Charging and Controlling the MSB 1. Before you wear the MSB, make sure it is fully charged.

The unit should be charged every night, then run during the day until it runs out of power. If the MSB runs out of power during the day it can be charged at that time (it should take less than 2 hours to fully charge the MSB).

2. Use the power cord to charge the MSB. Plug one end of

the power cord into the port on the MSB and the two-prong end into a 110-volt (common household) electrical outlet (Figure 2).

3. When the MSB is charging, you will see solid green and orange LED lights on the circuit board. When the MSB is fully charged the orange light will flicker rapidly and the green light will stay on (see Figure 3, Table 1).

Figure 3: Location of LED Lights

4. After the unit has completed charging, remove the power

adapter from the MSB. Turn the MSB on by pressing and releasing the power button (Figure 4).

5. To turn off the MSB, press and hold the power button (on the side of the MSB) for 5 seconds, then release the button. You will need a pen or paper clip to turn the switch on or off (Figure 4).

Figure 4: MSB Power Switch

6. If the LED lights turn off, then the MSB is off. If the LED

lights begin blinking, you can stop pressing the button. The MSB will complete its processing and turn off.

Powering Up the MSB and Phone 1. The MSB and phone will record your activity and

location. If you do not want activity and/or location information collected, turn off the MSB and phone. Turn the MSB and phone back on when you are ready to have activity and location information collected.

2. Start the MSB by pressing the power button once (Figure

4). 3. Start the cell phone by pressing and briefly holding down

the power key/button (on the top of the phone at the left side, Figure 7).

4. When the cell phone starts you will see the i-mate splash

screen, then as Windows starts, the My Experience tool screen (Figure 8).

5. To prevent accidental keypad use when the phone is not in use, lock the keypad by pressing and holding the Hangup key (Figure 7). When the phone is in locked mode, you will see “Unlock” at the lower left of the screen.

6. To unlock the phone, click the Left button and then the *

key. 7. If you will be in a situation in which you do not want the

phone to ring audibly, you can select a different profile. To access profiles, briefly press the power button, and then select Silent or Silent + Vibrate (Figure 9). You can also use the volume keys on the left-hand side of the phone to control the ringing volume.

Wearing the MSB and Cell Phone 1. Clip the MSB to your belt (Figure 10), using the clip on

the back of the case and the ring clip, and place the cell phone anywhere that is convenient (pocket, backpack, purse, etc.). Please make sure that the MSB and the cell phone remain within several feet of each other during normal operation (the two devices communicate wirelessly).

Figure 10: Wearing the MSB

2. With the MSB on your belt and the cell phone in a

convenient location, feel free to go about your daily activities as you normally would. You can wear a coat or sweater over the MSB without impairing its function. Keep the cell phone where you can hear it ring or feel the vibration when a survey starts. Do not allow the MSB or phone to get wet.

Using the Activity Survey 1. About once an hour, the cell phone will ring and/or

vibrate to alert you to fill out the activity survey. If you are driving a car, riding a bicycle, or doing anything else that requires full attention, please do NOT fill out the survey until you are in a safe situation!

2. Unlock the phone by clicking the Left button and then the

* key. 3. Use the combination of the joystick and the left and right

hardware keys (Figure 7) to fill out the survey. Samples of a survey are shown in the figures below.

4. Click OK (using the Left button) to start the survey

(Figure 11). If you do not begin the survey within a minute, it will autosnooze and prompt again in a few minutes. After 3 prompts, the phone will return to its normal operating state and prompt again in another hour. If you wish to skip the survey, click the Right (“Menu”) button and select Dismiss.

Troubleshooting If power to the phone or MSB runs out, plug the unit(s) in for recharging. If the SD card pops out of the MSB, turn the power switch off, re-insert the SD card, and then turn the MSB power switch back on. If the phone indicates that the My Experience application has stopped running (e.g., you have not gotten a survey in more than an hour), you can restart it clicking the Hangup button, then the Left (“Start/More”) button until you see the MyExperience icon, then use the joystick to select the icon, and press down on the joystick. If we detect a problem with any of the equipment we may call you on the cell phone. In case of other problems or questions, send e-mail or call Phil Hurvitz:
