REUNION ASSOCIATION

LOOK OUT

Hello One & All,

The big holidays are behind us and now we can watch the bills roll in to pay

for them. Our winter is really acting up. Three days ago it was 74 degrees,

yesterday was 40 degrees and tornadoes, and today is very windy and 20

degrees. Can’t wait for summer to come along.

As you can see the reunion for September is set up and looking pretty good.

We will be attending an Army graduation ceremony that they say is

something to see. Due to the graduation ceremony we have had to move our

free day to Thursday. This is something we have talked about doing anyway

so that everyone doesn’t have to watch the time all day when the free day is

on Friday so that they get back in time for the banquet. We will see how it

works out this year then let us know how you do or don’t like it.

Our paid up membership has increased but we still want everyone to keep an

eye out for more shipmates around the country. The more active shipmates

we have the stronger our reunions/organization becomes. So far we are still

one of the few groups still operating in the black but we have to watch it.

That’s all from this end today, any questions, comments, things you would like

to see or not see, please get in touch and let me know.

Your most humble shipmate,

Smooth Sailing,

Terry Crawford

Page 3 FROM THE HORSES MOUTH

Hello Shipmates and Friends,

I have started receiving invitations from other ships that I served on

throughout my Navy career, to attend their reunions. I can honestly say

that they do not compare favorably with the Prichett’s annual shindig. We

are very lucky to get the great tours, hospitality rooms, banquet and sleeping rooms at

reasonable prices. Most of their hotel rooms start at $109.00! We will continue to work

for you to get the best possible reunion at a reasonable cost. Columbus, GA is a go and

the itinerary is in this issue. John, Carol and all concerned have made a concentrated

effort to get all the details out to you early this year. If there are any changes, you will be

notified as soon as possible. Be prepared for some good old Southern “horse-pitality”!

We are happy to say that our paid membership has increased some since last year. Some

of our long-time loyal members have not paid yet, but we are sure that this is just an

oversight and we will be hearing from you soon! If not, I will send out a nasty-gram. (Just

kidding!)

Listed below are a few of the places you may want to visit on the free day, in and around

Columbus, that are not on our tour itinerary:

Coca-Cola Space Science Center. Open 10 am to 4 pm. Price $3.00 - $6.00

Columbus Botanical Gardens. Open daily during daylight hours. FREE

Columbus Museum. Open 10 am - 5 pm; Thursday 10 am - 8 pm. FREE

Columbus Riverwalk. 5 am - 11 pm. FREE

International Marketplace. Includes the Museum of Transportation, Museum of

Southern Stoneware and the Lunchbox Museum. Open Wednesday - Saturday 10 am - 6

pm.

Springer Opera House. Tours Monday and Wednesday. Price $5.00

Historic Linwood Cemetery. 19th century cemetery with historic citizens, Confederate

Soldiers graves and many museum quality monuments.

There are also many Civil War sights within driving distance from the hotel.

Atlanta, GA has many things to see and do and is only 106 miles from Columbus.

Visit Plains, GA, home of our 39th President (and Billy Beer!)

There are many scenic highways and byways and historic trails to travel. This is just a

small sample of how to spend your free time. Sometimes I think it is best to just wherever

the wind takes you! For me, it will blow me to the hospitality room at the hotel!

Take care my friends….

Martha Gragg and the case of the missing earring! A

few ladies were helping her search for her lost

earring. After about a half and hour searching the

hospitality room and a trail back into the hotel, Carol

Benoit asked “Did you check inside your blouse?”

Guess where it was! A good laugh was had by all!

From Terri Nowakowski: We’re all in shock [at the loss of Ed Costello] as I’m sure

you are. He touched so many lives. Even though he was a big Goof, he was our

goof. He’s in a better place probably enjoying a few rob roys.

Costello, Edward M. Age 72 of Tinley Park, passed away due to complications of pneumonia on January 31, 2013. Beloved lifetime companion of Terri Nowakowski of Tinley Park; dear brother of Joseph P. (Catherine) Costello of Naples, FL, Mary T. (John W.) Palermo of Naples, FL, and Catherine Costello-Heiron (David Heiron) of Mokena; fond uncle of Deana Palermo Bickler and John Palermo Jr. Edward was born in Chicago and graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 1958. He attended Loyola University 1958-1962. He served in the U.S. Navy, retiring after 20 years as a Commander. He lived in Tinley Park

since 1970. He retired from the Social Security and Healthcare Financing Administrations after 25 years. Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Edward to Fisher House (fisherhouse.org/donate/). For info or to sign the guestbook: (708)444-2266 or HeartlandMemorial.com.

From Marilyn Harper: I just wanted you to know that Bill Harper passed away this morning

(19 Nov 2012). He was just worn out. He had fought the cancer for so long and couldn’t

fight anymore. He just went to sleep easily early this morning. We will miss him so much

but we are glad that he is at peace.

Dear Terry Crawford, my brother-in-law Lt. Charles Keith Shay (known as Keith) of Highlands Ranch, CO, (formerly of Winnetka, IL), died May 14, 2012. Keith and my husband, Lt. John Reid Taylor who died in 1998, met when both served aboard the USS Prichett during WWII. After the war Keith married John's sister, Marilyn Taylor, who died in 2011.

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK:

Well, a new year already and Mr Ralph and I have hit the road running!

Already made a 4 day road trip to New Orleans (before the Superbowl and

Mardi Gras madness), then a 5 day road trip up to Canton, TX, the largest flea

market in the state of Texas! What fun! We have planned a short trip up to

Canyon Lake to go fishing with friends in March, then our next big trip is

Alaska in May. Ralph’s granddaughter will be graduating from high school, so

we plan to attend. Then, the reunion in Columbus. GA will be coming up fast

after that! Can’t wait! Don, I will be sending in our registration form and

money within the next few weeks!

I hope that I get to see all of the usual suspects and maybe even meet a few

new folks!

I know I ask every time, but please send me old photos with names and stories

to go with them. I had to cut this newsletter to 8 pages, instead of the usual

10 because I only had 9 pages worth of info and did not want to have a blank

page...sorry, John, I had to leave out the colored flyer. So, please help me out!
