USU Facilities is pleased to announce James W. Huppi as the employee of the month for February 2016. Jim has been with the Facilities Planning, Design & Construction (PD&C) for just over twenty-five years. He is currently working as the campus landscape architect and represents USU on the Cache Highline Water Association Board. Before coming to USU Jim worked for Bush & Gudgell Engineering, the Salt Lake City Planning Department, and Wirth Design Associates while working in Kuwait, designing urban parks for Kuwait City prior to Desert Storm. Ben Berrett, Director of PD&C, has said, “Jim’s unique and extensive experience benefits every project we do. No one does a more thorough plan review than Jim. His background in maintenance, operation, utilities, snow removal, as well as planning and design, lets him see a project in a way that architects and designer can’t. Jim’s loyalty and dedication to Utah State University is like no other person that I have worked with. I congratulate Jim on being awarded employee of the month. Well deserved.” Jordy Guth, Assistant Director for PD&C, has said of Jim, “The transition for Jim coming over to Planning hasn't been difficult at all; he’s taken it in stride. For someone who has been here as long as Jim, that says a lot about him. People can get set in their ways over time, but Jim has welcomed the new challenge. He previously did more design & project management, but now he’s doing more planning. He’s taken on a lot of leadership, overseeing one of the plans that we’re doing right now. One of Jim’s strongest suits is organization. He completes his work in a timely man- ner and with high quality. Jim was born and raised in Logan, Utah. He has five brothers; one has passed on, as have his parents. His other brothers live in Millville, Logan, and Idaho. Jim graduated from Sky View High School, and then earned his Bachelor’s degree from USU in LAEP: Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning. Jim and his wife, Julie, live in Logan and have been married for 29 years. They are the proud parents of three sons and two daughters, two of whom are currently enrolled at USU. Moving Crew: Matt Francom, Kyla Bradshaw, Noah Dobson,

Adam Allen, Chet Smith, Colton Broadhead, & Daniel Lenhart

The USU Moving Crew has existed for over 36 years.

Initially it started as part of the work of the

custodians. At one point there was a huge layoff across

the campus and it resulted in the termination of the

moving crew. After six months it was determined that

the Moving Crew was necessary due to the outside cost

and time it took to get a private company to do the work.

The work began to build and a crew of two full-time

employees and a handful of part-time students was put

into place. The Moving Crew now consists of two full-

time employees and seven part-time students. The Crew

has two flatbed trucks, an enclosed trailer, a flatbed

trailer, and a box truck.

Even though the Moving Crew is directly underneath

the Events group, they do more than just events. They

do all setups around campus including graduation,

gymnastics, firesides, etc. If you ever see white tables

and chairs around campus, then you have seen their

work. They move campus offices, incubators, freezers,

and labs. They even move extravagant equipment such

as a five million dollar giant microwave (a ton in

weight), millions of dollars worth of antique furniture,

and a large receiver to Clarkston for Multi Media. The

Movers also oversee all moves to our regional campuses.

They have made trips to Nephi, Tooele, Park City,

Vernal, Roosevelt, Delta, and Brigham City. If it needs

to be moved and they have the right equipment, they

will get the job done!

We are grateful for the Moving Crew and all they do for

the USU community!

STEP-UP AWARD: I wanted to tell you of the exceptional

work that I have seen Mike Law perform. All my

interactions with Mike have been extremely courteous and

professional. On January 19th, about 10:30 am, Mike

observed a male USU student whose vehicle had stalled at

the intersection of 700 N 1200 E. He stopped to help, jump

starting his vehicle and getting him out of the roadway.

Mike always is one of the first to help whenever he observes

a problem. I remember another time last semester where

another student’s car became disabled and Mike stopped to

assist them as well. But it was this incident that made me

realize that Mike is always willing to help out our USU

Campus community, even if it’s out of his specific specialty.

Let’s put it this way, Mike is one employee I know by name,

not just by face. Thank you Mike for all you do for USU and

Facilities!

SAFETY AWARD: Recently Brandon Hansen and Chad

Henager worked together to install much needed lighting

outside of the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum and over the

stairway on the west side of the arena. This area is very

dark at night and the addition of this lighting will allow

occupants to exit safely after hours. This additional

lighting illuminates the space really well for all those people

working early or late. Many folks who don’t have a light

switch key will be very appreciative of this extra lighting.

Thanks to both Brandon and Chad for taking care of this

and making the building a little bit safer.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!

for your years of service!

FEBRUARY 29TH

RED VELVET WHOOPIE PIES Cookies

1 (18.25 oz) box of red velvet cake mix

2 eggs, lightly beaten

½ cup vegetable oil

Frosting 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened

¼ cup butter, softened

2 teaspoons milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

34 cups powdered sugar (depending on the consistency you like)

Instructions 1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

2. Mix together the cake mix, eggs, and oil in a large bowl. Roll

the dough into balls the size of walnuts. Place 2 inches

apart on ungreased baking sheets.

3. Bake in the preheated oven until the tops start to crack, about

8 minutes. Cool in the pans for 10 minutes before removing

to cool completely on a wire rack.

4. In a large bowl combine cream cheese, butter, milk, and vanilla.

Add the powdered sugar 1 cup at a time, mix well.

If consistency is too stiff, add more milk.

5. Spread a generous amount of icing on the bottom of a cookie,

sandwich it with another cookie, pressing firmly so that the icing

comes all the way out to the edge.
