Summary

Incumbents in the Electrical Technician series install, repair, and maintain electrical systems of various voltages for campus buildings and properties.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Electrical Technician Senior is distinguished from the Electrical Technician Journeyman in that incumbents in the Senior level perform duties requiring more responsibility, expertise, knowledge, and experience; and provide guidance and training to less senior technicians.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Electrical Technician Senior reports to a Foreman. This classification trains and guides less senior technicians.

Typical Functions

1. Installs electrical systems for remodeling and commercial projects.2. Maintains electrical systems of various voltages.3. Repairs and maintains campus lighting in buildings, walkways, parking lots, roadways, etc.4. Performs preventive maintenance on all electrical systems and equipment.5. Assists with high voltage installations, repairs, and maintenance.6. Troubleshoots and repairs electrical controls.7. Acts as a liaison between University and outside contractors for elevator maintenance.8. Ensures that USU fire systems meet the code requirements of NFPA 72, the state of Utah, and

local requirements as dictated by the AHJ.9. Operates sound system mixer and communication headsets at all USU local events held in the

Spectrum, stadium, or other temporary locations. 10. Assists the USU Fire Marshal with quarterly inspections on the campus wide fire sprinkler

systems.11. Serves as a resource to others in the resolution of complex problems and issues.12. Manages assignments that are broad in nature and require originality and ingenuity.13. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.14. Promotes continuous improvements of workplace safety and environmental practices.15. Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.2. Advanced knowledge of electrical installation and maintenance techniques.3. Skilled in the use of various hand and power tools common to the trade.4. Knowledge of safe work practices.5. Ability to understand and follow directions without close supervision.6. Ability to measure, cut thread, pull, and install electrical conduit.7. Ability to create, read, understand, and build to specifications from blueprints and schematic

drawings.8. Skilled in troubleshooting and repairing various types of electrical circuitry.9. Ability to isolate defects in wiring, switches, motors, and other electrical equipment. 10. Comprehensive knowledge of all state, electrical, safety, and fire codes.11. Knowledge of all types of electrical systems including generation and utilization.12. Ability to communicate with customers and co-workers.13. Knowledge of computer software, including Windows.

Minimum Qualifications

Six years of directly related work experience in the electrical trade is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees occasionally work outdoors, may not be protected from weather conditions or contaminants, and may be exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations.
