In the Beginning…

• Utility Management System began 1996.

• Utilized outside sources for design.

• Water utility mapping in March 1997.

• Sanitary mapping in August 1997.

• Personnel turnover in fall of 1997.

Getting Started

• System Analysis • Know what your users need…

• A user is the best person to identify a clear set of requirements.

• In order to define a system, a users terms, definitions, and interpretations must be known.

Page 9: Utility Mapping Water-Sanitary-Storm City of Wausau.

Getting Started

• Meetings – to determine the users needs

• Models – to determine attributes and vocabulary

Data Entry /Collection

• Majority of features collected with GPS.

• Created copies of all valve cards, hydrant cards, miscellaneous info.

• Ran several check plots and compared to old mylar system sets.

• Mapping began in all areas of the city. Utilities were not completed in one area/section before moving onto the other.

GPS and Engineering Plans

• GPS along with good engineering plans will make your input much easier.

• Wausau had plans scanned by Master Graphics.

Discrepancies

Page 22: Utility Mapping Water-Sanitary-Storm City of Wausau.

…what is the hold up!?

Page 23: Utility Mapping Water-Sanitary-Storm City of Wausau.

• There is a demand for immediate and accurate utility mapping in many cities.

Page 24: Utility Mapping Water-Sanitary-Storm City of Wausau.

Maintenance Reports

• Updating your GIS

• Fire Flow Tests

• Maintenance – ie. New O-Rings place in Hydrant or a packed water valve

What Path Do I Take?

Page 28: Utility Mapping Water-Sanitary-Storm City of Wausau.

Software Choices• AML based stormwater management?

• Geodatabase stormwater management?

•The choice for Geodatabase based on:

–The need to remove reliance of custom aml programming.

–Flexibility and functionality of ArcMap editing tools.

–The need for speed.

–The need for a long term solution.

Document Link Table

The feature-document relationships are many to many. So you can use the same record for several features.

• Utilize GPS (Trimble Pathfinder Pro) with a data dictionary.

• Begin in a quarter section and stay with it until finished. Preferably a section near the city limits. These tend to be newer subdivisions and will have the necessary plans.

• Run check plots and let the people in the field scrub for errors.

Lessons Learned

Page 39: Utility Mapping Water-Sanitary-Storm City of Wausau.

Conclusion

• Both OS’s have been stable• Performance

-Arc Macro Language - Slow-Object oriented programming – Fast

• Next phase…– Convert water and sanitary to a geodatabase– Provide the data via ArcIms
