ABOUT THIS REPORT The charts and tables in this publication are intended to provide aggregateand comparative data on healthcare facility utilization in the District of Columbia. The source of the data is the District of Columbia Hospital Association’s (DCHA) Monthly Utilization Survey and Quarterly Bed Capacity and Census Survey (self-reported by individual facilities). Data for 2014 may be vary slightly from earlier publications due to clarification of data definitions and when facilities have revised data.

The number of inpatient admissions has declined over the last five years, with a decrease of almost half a percent in 2015 compared to 2014. As evident in the overall increase in ambulatory surgeries, the hospitals continue to provide more and more care on an outpatient basis.

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT VISITS


Emergency Department visits have increased steadily in the District of Columbia. In 2015, there were 18,350 (6.6%) more visits than in 2014. The 2015 number of Emergency Department visits was 7% greater than 5 years ago and 31% greater than 10 years ago.
