    The Department of Wellness and Recreational Sports

    employs students in a wide range of positions

    including lifeguards, weight room supervisors, interiormaintenance, membership service attendants, ofce

    assistants, building facility supervisors and activity

    instructors. Advanced certications are required for

    certain positions. Apply at the member services desk.

    Bg Rs A valid UTPA or department approved photo ID must

    be presented at all times for access to the UTPA Wellnessand Recreational Complex (WRSC). The Department of Wellness and Recreational Sports

    reserves the right to restrict and/or refuse admittance toits facilities and programs. All University and Departmentalpolicies and procedures must be complied with includingthose for each area at all times. Abusive language and/or actions toward a staff person

    or fellow members may result in loss of privileges and/orsuspension from facilities. Children 3 years of age and under may not enter

    the WRSC unless attending a 3 and under scheduledprogram. Children 17 years of age and under must have a waiver

    signed (on site) by a parent or legal guardian and may usethe WRSC during assigned hours unless enrolled as acurrent UTPA student. Children 14 years of age and under may use the WRSC

    when accompanied and directly supervised by an adult

    (age 17 or older). Children over the age of 5 must use gender appropriatelocker rooms.The weight room and cardiovascular machines are

    restricted to users 16 years of age and older unlessenrolled as a current UTPA student. Facility users, with or without compensation, other than

    the Wellness Staff are not permitted to provide instruction,and/or coaching without prior written approval from the

    Department of Wellness and Recreational Sports. No more than three guests per member per day. Guests

    must provide a photo ID, pay the appropriate fee, and signthe waiver form. Smoking is not permitted in the WRSC at any time.

    Shirts are required in all areas of the facility except the

    pool deck. Shoes are required in all areas of the facilityexcept the pool deck and locker rooms.Eating and drinking are permitted only in designated

    areas. Please be aware of them. Do not eat and/or drink in

    activity areas. Bicycles, mopeds, in-line skates, skate shoes, orskateboards are not allowed inside the WRSC. Bikesand mopeds must be locked up outside the facility andskateboards and in-line skates must be carried. Animals are not allowed in the facility or pool areas

    unless they are specially trained to aid in the mobility oftheir owners (i.e., seeing-eye or hearing ear dogs). The department is not responsible for lost or stolen

    items. Lost and found items left more than 10 days will beremoved. No ID no entry no exceptions.

    Wireless phone use is not permitted in workout areas

    and locker rooms. The WRSC does not allow photographs or videotaping

    in the facility, without prior approval from the Departmentof Wellness and Recreational Sports.

    FaCility RuleS and SeRViCeS

    Cb SrsThe University of Texas-Pan American Wellness and Recreational Sports Department

    is committed to the development and promotion of club sports. Club sports are an

    important part of the University experience for many students. At the moment, we offer

    a variety of Club Sports including Swimming, Mens and Womens Soccer, Wrestling,

    and Cycling. Anyone who may be interested in joining or starting a club is encouraged

    to come by the WRSC or contact the ofce and inquire as to how to join or start a

    club. Our department is looking for Clubs that would like to compete athletically with

    other organizations throughout the state and country, as well as represent the Wellness

    and Recreational Sports Department and The University of Texas-Pan American in a

    positive way.

    Smmr CmsThe WRSC offers several day camps throughout the summer months. Camps are

    hosted and staffed in collaboration with various other department organizations to

    provide children ages 6-11 an opportunity for Fun, Fitness, and Learning. A wide

    array of activities, games, and lessons make the camp a diverse and

    enjoyable experience.

    Fc SrvcsFacility Rentals - Selected facilities at the WRSC may

    be reserved for group use by the UTPA community as

    well as non-University entities. Available facilities include

    the leisure pool, MAC Gymnasium, Main Gymnasium,

    social lounges, outdoor gathering spaces, conference

    rooms, dance studios, and the climbing wall. Group use

    of the pool is allowed on a reservation basis if available.

    The racquetball courts may be reserved at no charge to

    members 24 hours in advance by stopping at the member

    services desk.

    Groups who wish to reserve facilities, other than

    racquetball courts, must submit a facility use application

    at least two weeks prior to the reservation date. Rental

    fees must be paid in advance (if applicable). Reservations

    and information may be obtained by contacting the

    WRSC.

    Equipment Check Out - Equipment may be checked

    out for use in the WRSC by showing a valid Bronc ID

    card or Wellness Membership ID at the member services

    desk. Items such as basketballs, volleyballs, racquets/

    racquetballs, towels, and other equipment are availablefor check out at the equipment area (section of the

    member services desk). * The rental of certain equipment

    requires a fee.

    Locker Service - Day use lockers are available for

    members free of charge. Lockers must be cleared before

    leaving the building. Unauthorized overnight use of

    lockers is subject to removal of contents. Locker keys areavailable at the member services desk. Locker services

    is available to members for $20/semester ($15/summer

    session) or $70/year. A $20 refundable deposit is required

    for all locker rentals. Visit the member services desk to

    sign up.

    Parking - Parking at The University of Texas-Pan

    American is by permit only. As a WRSC patron the

    following parking options are available to you.

    UTPA Parking UTPA afliated patrons (students, staff,

    or faculty) are authorized to park across from the WRSC

    by purchasing a UTPA parking permit from the Police

    Department, if available. Also, WRSC members may

    obtain a monthly visitors permit by showing proof of a

    WRSC membership to the Department of Campus Safety

    and $8/month.

    Bicycles and Public Transit All bicycles should be

    locked outside the entrance to the WRSC. UTPA is not

    responsible for lost or stolen bikes. The closest available

    bus lines servicing UTPA and the WRSC are at the Bronc

    Village Apartments.If you have any questions, contact the

    WRSC at (956) 665-7808 or the University Police during

    regular business hours.Programs - Unless otherwise noted, programs are

    open to members only. Registration for all programs are

    conducted at the WRSC. Unless otherwise noted, all

    programs are open only to persons 4 years of age and

    older. Some programs are open to students only.

    MmbrshsMembers of the WRSC are dened as current students (taking

    classes on campus enrolled in a matriculating degree program),student spouses/dependents, faculty/staff/spouses/dependents,alumni/spouses/dependents, or retirees/spouses. For informationregarding eligibility and wellness memberships, please call956/665-7808.

    Memberships are available on an annual or semester basis.Fees must be paid in full at the time of enrollment. Annualmemberships, (excluding dependent memberships) can be paidin full or through a credit card membership deduction process.Checks, cash, MasterCard, VISA, and Discover are accepted.

    UTPA BRONC ID cards or Wellness ID cards must be carried andshown upon request at all times.

    Should membership fees increase at any time, annualmembership rates will be honored until such membership isup for renewal, at which time the new rates will be assessed.

    All members shall receive notication of rate increases prior to

    implementation. Membership fees do not include programs. Theremay be restrictions and stipulations on some memberships.

    Memberships are nontransferable and nonrefundable, except in the case of special circumstances. Use restrictions andlimitations will apply for all dependent members to ensure student priority.

    utpa SsSummer Session: A facility use fee must be paid by continuing stuents who are not enrolled for on-campus summerclasses. Payment of the appropriate fee at the WRSC is required for summer access. Continuing students are eligible forthe student rates until the start of the fall semester. Fees: $35/summer session.

    utpa aqcsThe BRONCS swimming program offers Valley swimmers

    of all ages and abilities an opportunity to develop theircompetitive swimming skills under a national levelcoaching staff. The program is designed to emphasizestroke and turn technical development in a fun andchallenging environment.

    PROGRAMS

    Learn to Swim Our BRONCS learn to Swim program is offered year

    round and is located at the WRSC swimming pool. Thewater is warm and suitable for year round instruction. TheBRONCS LTS program is much different than other area

    programs because of the focus on small group instruction.Most students are placed in very small groups of 2-4swimmers to 1 instructor. This provides a motivatingand progress driven teaching environment. Classes areavailable for ALL ages of students from infants to adults!

    UTPA Student Swim Club and Masters The BRONCS Masters program is designed for students,

    faculty/staff, and community members who wish to learnabout aquatic tness and competitive swimming strokes.

    The program is highly instructional and runs during theacademic school year. Swimmers of all abilities arewelcome but swimmers must be water safe. Competitionsare offered but participation is optional.

    Competitive Youth Community Team This program is offered to all local area youth who wishto learn and compete in the sport of swimming. OurBRONCS Swim Team is a USA Swimming Associated

    Team and trains year round. Swimmers of all ages arewelcome but must be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle.The BRONCS team will compete in local, regional, and

    national competitions. The program is highly instructional

    and swimmers are placed in appropriate age and skill levelgroups.

    Competitive Swim Clinics These special clinics are offered seasonally to help local

    area High School swimmers and summer swimmers learnthe basics of competitive swimming techniques. Clinic

    sessions are purely instructional focusing on the latestand most advanced swimming techniques.

    eqmorsNeed a little extra help learning how to use some of the

    machines? Come to one of the scheduled equipment

    orientations. The orientation group will meet in the front

    lobby by the member services desk at the scheduled

    time. One of our staff members will walk you through theweight and cardio areas explaining the different types of

    equipment and demonstrating how to use them. This is

    a great way to familiarize yourself with the machines and

    ask questions!

    Fss assssmsFitness Assessment FREE of CHARGE! Having a

    tness assessment is a great way to help gauge your

    overall health and it can also be used as a great weightmanagement tool. If you are interested in receiving your

    free tness assessment, please talk with one of

    the weight room supervisors to sign up for an

    available time.

    Assist you with general conditioning, weight loss, weightgain, improving overall health and tness

    faculty/staff ID, or retiree ID-Faculty/staff from other

    University of Texas System schools are not eligible.

    A valid picture ID from UTPA indicating current or

    previous employment at the University or a letter from the

    department head along with a picture ID is needed.

    FEES:

    Annual/$250 --------Semester/$85 --------- Summer/$80

    Spouse of a UTPA faculty/staff member-A form must be

    completed at the human resources department to verify

    the spousal relationship. Once proof (ID Card) is presented

    along with the faculty/staff member being present, a spouse

    membership can be sold.

    FEES:

    Annual/$250 -------- Semester/$85 --------Summer/$80

    Legal dependents of faculty/staff and their spouses

    with children between the ages of 4 to 17-Membership

    good only on Saturdays and Sundays during the fall and

    spring semesters, and normal operational hours during the

    summer sessions. They must show legal document(birth certicate or income tax form) proving to be the legal

    parent or guardianship of the child.

    FEES:

    Annual/$50

    UTPA Alumni/Spouse-Alumni are dened as degree

    holding individuals who have graduated from UTPA with a

    bachelors, masters or doctoral degree. All they must do

    is produce a valid transcript from UTPA,

    or a copy of the diploma along with a

    picture ID (drivers license or state ID).

    A spouse must be accompanied by the

    UTPA graduate along with his/her UTPA

    transcript or diploma, and one piece of

    recently mailed bill or legal contract with

    both names proving a legal marriage or a

    legal cohabitation certicate (document

    from the Hidalgo County Courthouse).

    FEES:

    Annual/$300--Semester/$100--

    Summer/$100

    Legal dependents of alumni and their

    spouses for children between the ages

    of 4 to 17-Membership good only on

    Saturdays and Sundays during the fall andspring semesters, and normal operational

    hours during the summer sessions. They must show legal document (birth certicate or income tax form) proving to be

    Spouse of a UTPA Student-They must be accompanied by the student along with his/her UTPA student ID and one

    Extended Family-The UTPA Extended Family Membership is a benet provided to UTPA students, faculty/staff, and

    alumni. Extended Family Members include the mother, father, brother, and/or sister of a current UTPA student, faculty/

    staff, or alumni.

    FEES: $50/summer session ----------------- $100/fall and spring (*time restrictions apply for fall and spring semesters)

    Guest- individual accompanied by a WRSC member. They must prevent a photo ID, sign the facility waiver, and pay the

    appropiate fee.

    FEES: $6/admission

    Faculty/staff/alumni/spouse prorating-In order to receive a prorated rate, an individual must purchase the current

    semester at the halfway point or farther and the next semester at the full price (100 percent). Further details and the date

    when proration can be request at 956/665-7808.

    intRaMuRal SpoRtS

    irmr SrsWelcome to the UTPA Intramural Sports Program. This program provides an exciting opportunity for all WRSC members

    to participate together in sports. The Wellness and Recreational Sports Department encourages fair play, participation,

    lifelong learning, and opportunity for all. Intramural leagues, tournaments, and special events are offered in the fall and

    spring semesters. The Calendar of Events can be found on the UTPA WRSC website. Interested parties are encouraged

    to contact the WRSC Sports Department if they would like to see a program or sport added to the Intramural schedule.

    To hear a message with updated game information, call the Intramural Hotline (956) 665-7426. Messages pertaining to

    Intramural Sports can be left at this number.

    Eligibility: Any person who has a WRSC

    membership is eligible to participate

    in Intramural Sports. This includes all

    current students, as well as alumni

    and faculty/staff that have purchased

    memberships. Registration Entries are due

    by the deadlines listed in the Intramural

    Calendar of Events. All entry deadlines

    are on Thursdays, unless otherwise

    noted. Most events have a two to three

    week registration period. Late entries

    will not be accepted, NO EXCEPTIONS!

    Please contact the WRSC for registration

    information. Captains meetings are held for

    every event on the calendar. All CaptainsMeetings will be held on Fridays, unless

    otherwise noted. Barring conicts, they

    will be held at the WRSC, in the 2nd oor

    conference room. Rules, regulations, and schedules will be distributed at these meetings. Also, any rule changes for

    the particular events will also be discussed. All meetings are mandatory.

    Other Policies:

    Proper Identication is required to participate

    No alcohol or tobacco use is permitted at anytime in or around Intramural events.

    Good Sportsmanship is expected and required of all participants, coaches, fans, and spectators.

    The Policies and Procedures manual, which contains all the policies and procedures used for the Intramural Sports

    program, can be found on the WRSC website(www.utpa.edu/wellness).

    Gr ercs prgrmsGroup Exercise is a great way to meet your tness goals, develop friendships, and learn a new skill. No matter your

    reason for attending Group Exercise, we have a program for you! Our tness instructors are committed to catering

    to ALL tness levels and abilities by providing modications for beginners as well as progressions for more advanced

    exercisers.

    The WRSC Group Exercise program has something for everyone! If youre looking to improve your cardiovascular

    endurance which will help you sustain exercise for longer periods of time you may want to try our SPINNING, Zumba,Aqua, Kickboxing, or Step classes. If you would like to improve your muscular physique which will help tone and dene

    muscles try any of our sculpting classes such as Muscle Sculpt, Cardio Sculpt, and much more. To relax, rejuvenateand refresh your body to help reduce stress and improve exibility consider trying our mind/body classes such as Yoga,

    Medication, or Pilates. Finally if youre looking to learn a new skill you may want to try classes such as Capoeira, aBrazilian martial arts class. Our schedule will change each semester so be sure to check out our current class offeringsand class descriptions either online at www.utpa.edu/wellness or pick up a yer at the WRSC Member Service desk.

    As mentioned, Group Exercise is a fantastic way to meet new people AND stay committed to an exercise program. By

    attending Group Exercise classes you will meet people who share a similar interest and may have similar exercise goals.Youll make a new friend and perhaps a workout buddy, who you can attending your favorite Group Exercise class with.

    UTPA Climbing Wall is a tness, teaching and recreational facility. The WRSC promotes personal growth, teamwork,leadership, increased tness, and recreational opportunities for the university community through climbing activities and

    programs. This facility offers the students and facility members an opportunity to learn and hone their climbing skills in

    a friendly, encouraging, and experienced climbing environment.

    The 35-foot wall has a great deal of natural looking features along with handholds to assist climbers. Currently, there are

    ve routes in the wall to accommodate novice and advanced climbers. Climbing wall enthusiasts have described the

    UTPA climbing wall as one of the best in the state. Workshops on technique building and competitions are scheduled

    for each semester for the enjoyment of participants. All students enrolled at The University of Texas-Pan American

    along with faculty, staff, spouse, and dependent (children 4-17) members are eligible to use the climbing wall.

    All climbers are required to sign an additional release waiver and a code of conduct prior to use.
