MD-TUBERCLOSIS & RESPIRATORY DISEASES (Pulmonology)
Pulmonology is the medical specialty dealing with disease involving the respiratory tract. Pulmonology is synonymous with pneumology, ("lung") and respirology and respiratory medicine. Pulmonology is called chest medicine and respiratory medicine in some countries and areas. Pulmonology is considered a branch of internal medicine, and is related to intensive care medicine. Pulmonology often involves managing patients who need life support and mechanical ventilation. Pulmonologists are specially trained in diseases and conditions of the chest, particularly pneumonia, asthma, tuberculosis, emphysema, and complicated chest infections.
One of the first major discoveries relevant to the field of pulmonology was the discovery of pulmonary circulation. Originally, it was thought that blood reaching the right side of the heart passed through small 'pores' in the septum into the left side to be oxygenated, as theorized by Galen; however, the discovery of pulmonary circulation disproves this theory, which had previously been accepted since the 2nd century. Thirteenth century anatomist and physiologist Ibn Al-Nafis accurately theorized that there was no 'direct' passage between the two sides (ventricles) of the heart. He believed that the blood must have passed through the pulmonary artery, through the lungs, and back into the heart to be pumped around the body. This is believed by many to be the first scientific description of pulmonary circulation.
Although pulmonary medicine only began to evolve as a medical specialty in the 1950s, William Welch and William Osler founded the 'parent' organization of the American Thoracic Society, the National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis. The care, treatment, and study of tuberculosis of the lung is recognised as a discipline in its own right, phthisiology. When the specialty did begin to evolve, several discoveries were being made linking the respiratory system and the measurement of arterial blood gases, attracting more and more physicians and researchers to the developing field.
MD-AVIATION MEDICINE
Also known as aerospace medicine, flight medicine, or space medicine, aviation medicine is a medical specialty that focuses on the physical and psychological conditions associated with flying and space travel.
Since flying airplanes and spacecraft involves great risk and physical demands, such as changes in gravity and oxygen, pilots and astronauts need medical experts to protect their safety and the public's safety.

In the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires all pilots who fly above 14,500 ft (4,420 m) to be prepared for pressure changes caused by lower oxygen levels at high altitude. Pilots must either have a pressurized cabin or access to an oxygen mask. Without these protections, they could experience hypoxia, or altitude sickness. Hypoxia reduces the amount of oxygen in the brain, causing such symptoms as dizziness, shortness of breath, and mental confusion. These symptoms could cause the pilot to lose control of the plane. Hypoxia can be treated with oxygen therapy.
MD-DERMATOLOGY, VENEROLOGY & LEPROSY
Dermatology including Venereology (STD) and Leprology is one of the important basic clinical specialties. Considerable advances have taken place in the understanding of dermatological disorders and their treatment. Leprosy is still a public health problem of considerable magnitude in the country. The STDs are showing worldwide increase in incidence with new dimensions added to it. There is a dearth of trained personnel in the specialty. Very few medical colleges in the country impart sufficient knowledge about these diseases at Undergraduate level and Postgraduate courses are not available in all medical colleges.
GMCS, Surat is known for its excellence in all specialties, particularly in achieving high academic standards. The curriculum of MD Dermatology has been made designed matching the other clinical specialties at the Institute. An attempt has been made to give a comprehensive training to the postgraduates including basic subjects and recent advances
MS-ORTHOPAEDICS
Orthopedic surgery or orthopedics (also spelled orthopaedic surgery and orthopaedics) is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.
Many orthopedic surgeons elect to do further training, or fellowships, after completing their residency training. Fellowship training in an orthopedic subspecialty is typically one year in duration (sometimes two) and sometimes has a research component involved with the clinical and operative training. Examples of orthopedic subspecialty training in the United States are:
• Hand surgery • Shoulder and elbow surgery • Total joint reconstruction (arthroplasty) • Pediatric orthopedics • Foot and ankle surgery • Spine surgery • Musculoskeletal oncology • Surgical sports medicine • Orthopedic trauma

MS-OPTHALMOLOGY
Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine that deals with the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye. An ophthalmologist is a specialist in medical and surgical eye problems. Since ophthalmologists perform operations on eyes, they are both surgical and medical specialists.
The degrees are Doctor of Medicine (MD), Master of Surgery (MS), Diploma in Ophthalmic Medicine and Surgery (DOMS), and Diplomate of National Board (DNB). The concurrent training and work experience is in the form of a junior residency at a medical college, eye hospital or institution under the supervision of experienced faculty. Further work experience in form of fellowship, registrar or senior resident refines the skills of these eye surgeons. All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) and various state level ophthalmological societies (like DOS) hold regular conferences and actively promote continuing medical education.
MD-Pediatric Oncology
Pediatric oncology is a specialty discipline in medicine concerned with diagnosing and treating children, usually up to the age of 18, with cancer. It is thought to be one of the most challenging of specialties because, despite successful treatment of many children, there is a high mortality rate still associated with various types of cancers. Losing pediatric patients can be extraordinarily difficult, as it goes against the normal course of life, and it takes strong-hearted people to work in this vitally necessary area of medicine.
The factors that trigger cancer in children are also often different to those in adults such as smoking, alcohol and environmental factors. Sub-specialty training in oncology covers in-patient and ambulatory care of oncology patients, which includes management of leukemia and solid tumors, long term follow-up of patients and palliative care. There are many medical professionals who devote themselves to some aspect of this specialty. These could include the many medical technicians that may perform or aid in treatment as prescribed by a pediatric oncologist. Doctors of other specialties may be involved in some of this work including pediatric surgeons and pediatric radiologists. Naturally, pediatric oncologists are doctors who are an important part of this medical field.
MD-NUCLEAR MEDICINE
Nuclear medicine is a medical specialty involving the application of radioactive substances in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. It is a branch or specialty of medicine and medical imaging that uses radioactive isotopes (radionuclides) and relies on the process of radioactive decay in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
In nuclear medicine procedures, radionuclides are combined with other elements to form chemical compounds, or else combined with existing pharmaceutical compounds, to form radiopharmaceuticals. These radiopharmaceuticals, once administered to the patient, can localize to specific organs or cellular receptors. This property of radiopharmaceuticals allows nuclear medicine the ability to image the extent of a disease process in the body, based on the cellular function and physiology, rather than relying on physical changes in the tissue anatomy. In some diseases, nuclear medicine studies can identify medical problems at an earlier stage than other diagnostic tests. Nuclear medicine, in a sense, is "radiology done inside out", or "endo-radiology", because it records radiation emitting from within the body rather than radiation that is generated by external sources like X-rays.

MD- Social & Preventive Medicine/ Community Medicine
Social & Preventive Medicine / Community Medicine improve and protect public health, locally and globally, through excellence in teaching, research and services. Preventive healthcare or preventive care consists of measures taken to prevent diseases or injuries rather than curing them or treating their symptoms. This contrasts in method with curative and palliative care, and in scope with public health methods (which work at the level of population health rather than individual health).
Preventive healthcare strategies are typically described as taking place at the primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary prevention levels. In addition, the term primal prevention has been used to describe all measures taken to ensure fetal well-being and prevent any long-term health consequences from gestational history and/or disease. The rationale for such efforts is the evidence demonstrating the link between fetal well-being, or "primal health", and adult health. Primal prevention strategies typically focus on providing future parents with: education regarding the consequences of epigenetic influences on their child, sufficient leave time for both parents or, for lack of it, at least some kin care giving.
Simple examples of preventive healthcare include hand washing, breastfeeding, immunizations, proper nutrition and exercise promotion. Preventive care may include examinations and screening tests tailored to an individual's age, health, and family history. In these big list, one has to little vigilant in selection of branch. Frankly speaking all branches are extraordinary and have good scope. The condition is that you have to excel the subject. India and world are craving for good doctors. First take decision, do you have surgical skills or not? This is very important question you have to ask yourself. If you are good at surgical skill and enjoying surgeries, than only select surgical branch MS. Otherwise select MD branches which have lots of choices.
In top ranking branches, descending order (top in demand is first) are as follow in surgical side MS Orthopedics, MS Obstetrics & Gynecology, MS Ophthalmology, MS General Surgery, MS Anatomy and MS ENT.
MD branches are as follow MD Radiology, MD Pediatrics, MD Medicine, MD Biochemistry, MD Skin (Dermatology), MD Pathology, MD psychiatry, MD Geriatrics, MD Community Medicine, MD Forensic Medicine, MD Anesthesia and other.
