InearlyJune,wecelebrateourhigh-schoolgraduatesastheypreparethetransitiontotheirlives'nextstages.Theverynextweek,wedevoteworshiptoheartheemergingvoicesofour9th-gradeComingofAgestudentsinanannualCredoservice.

Andthisyear,theCongregationaddstheretirementofourSeniorMinistertoatimeofmotion,ofchange.

Thisseasonbringsagiftofopportunity-toseeksourcesofnewgrowth,toacknowledgethepivotalmomentsthatchangethecoursesoflives,tohoneavisionbeforenextsteps.

MymostrobustGratitudegoesouttoallUUAAvolunteers.OurCongregationisparticularlyblessed.Volunteersareatthereadyeverydaytoensurethewell-beingofUnitarianUniversalismandallweservehere.Icanattest,ourelectedof5icersandourBoardofTrusteesarediligentlyatworktoensureasmoothtransitioninministryafterIretire.Volunteersareguidingthe5inancialmanagement,parkinglotconstruction,andrepairsthatwillkeepusabletouseourbuildingsandpropertyforourmanyministries.Volunteersteachwithourchildren,singinourchoirs,keepwatchoveroneanother,andprovideourpublicwitness.

Inourtradition,thepowertoordainliessolelywithcongregations.WhiletheMinisterialFellowshipCommitteeoftheUUAcanmakerecommendationsandsetrequirementsforaccessingcertainsystemsthatUUcongregationsshare,that'sthelimitoftheirpower.IunderstandtheimportanceoftheMFCprocessandhavechosentorespectthatpath.Ultimately,though,whattheydocanbeundone.Ordinationisforever.

GiventhatI'mthepersonyou'vevotedtoordain,Iobviouslyhaveavestedinterest(punintended)inthisparticularevent.

Butit'seasytofallintotheassumptionthattheriteisprimarilyabouttheordinand.Rather,it'sabouttherelationshipbetweencongregationandminister.

Inourpolity,wegatherunderthefundamentalunderstandingthatwe'reinthistogether.Weentercovenants,makingpromisestoeachother.Allofushavedirectaccesstothesacred,withnointermediary.Wechallengeeachothertobeourbestselvesbecauseeverypersonispotentiallyourteacher.Ministers-byvirtueofourcall,ourtraining,andourcommitments-actasguides,exhorters,visionaries,andcompanionsalongtheway.

Ordinationsignalsthatacongregationrecognizestheministerasaspiritualleader.It'saformalacknowledgmentthatyou'veseensomethinginmeworthyoftrustingandendorsing,andthatI,inturn,aminvestedinthelifeofthecongregation.Withoutthatreciprocity,Ibelievesomethingessentialgetslost.Throughthisriteofpassage,

"Iwas5irstintroducedtoUnitarianUniversalismthroughtheGrossePointeUnitarianChurch,whereIbecametheirDirectorofReligiousEducationfortwoyearsbeforemovingtoAnnArbor,whereIjoinedthestaffastheAssistantDirectorofReligiousEducationfrom1995to1997.Aftersteppingawayfromthatposition,IservedontheBoardofTrusteesastheliaisonfromtheRECommittee.IwasontheBoardthroughthemovetoourcurrentlocationhereonAnnArbor-SalineRoad.

Mynow-growndaughters,ClaraandGillian,bothfullyparticipatedinSGDprograms,includingComingofAge,andClaraandIwerebothfortunatetoalsoparticipateintheMothersandMaidensclassthatwasofferedatthetime.IhaveattendedseveralUUGeneralAssemblies,whichhaveshapedmyownworldviewgreatly.

IhaveservedUUAAinanumberofotherpositionsincludingfacilitatingComingofAge,participatingintheArtsandAestheticsCommittee,andworkingonthe150thAnniversaryprogramslastyear.Iamalsoinvolvedwithawomen'scirclethatstartedthroughourCakesfortheQueenofHeavenclass.Thiswomen'sgrouphasbeentogetherforalmost20years.

In2000,Iworkedtoget100AnnArborites,includingmanyUUAAmembers,toparticipateintheMillionMomMarchforsensiblegunlaws.TheAnnArborchapteroftheorganizationthatdevelopedoutofthateffortcontinuedtomeetforseveralyearsatthischurch.

In2002,IranforaseatonAnnArbor'sCityCouncilandservedasa4thWardRepresentativeforsixterms,totaling12years.Iservedonmanycouncilsandcommitteesfocusingonaffordablehousing,humanservices,andtheenvironment.InowserveontheBoardofDirectorsofRecycleAnnArborandamactiveintheNationalWildlifeFederation,LeagueofConservationVoters.Ialsoworkonissuesofprisonerre-entryandmassincarceration.

TriciaandPetehavebeenattendingtheCongregationregularlysince2001,aftergoingonaseveral-month"churchcrawl".TriciahastakenvariousadultclassesatUUAA.ShebeganteachingSGDclassesaround2005andenjoysspendingtimewiththechildreninherclasses.Since2003,shehasalsobeenontheWebtechTeam,whichhelpstomaintainanddesigntheCongregation'swebsite.Triciahasalsoservedasentertainmentchairfortheannualauctionfundraiser.Mostrecently,shehasbeenontheBoardofTrusteesforthelast2yearsandisexcitedtoremainontheBoardtohelpUUAAthroughtheministerialtransition.
