What Would Jesus Make of Modern America?

with Rev. Craig Scott

Many followers of today's Christianity endorse behavior

that seems decidedly unchristian: misogyny, vilification of

the poor and the "stranger among us,' lack of compassion,

violence and war-mongering, homophobia, and so on. So --

Just who was this Jesus whose followers created

Christianity, and what do his teachings say about what's

going on in America today?

Please join us for a potluck

lunch following

the service

Any idea that keeps anybody out is too small.

No Guilt Book Club, August 8, 6 p.m. Meeting place will be at the Sonora Thai Cuisine restaurant,

51 S. Washington St., Sonora

We will meet at 6 p.m. and discuss the book while we eat.

The book is I Rigoberta Menchú – an Indian Woman in Guatemala – Edited

and introduced by Elisabeth Burgos-Debray and translated by Ann Wright.

Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. The remarkable life of Rigoberta Menchú,

a Guatemalan peasant woman, reflects on the experiences common to many

Indian communities in Latin America. Menchú suffered gross injustice and hardship in her

early life: her brother, father and mother were murdered by the Guatemalan military. She

learned Spanish and turned to catechistic work as an expression of political revolt as well as

religious commitment. Menchú vividly conveys the traditional beliefs of her community and

her personal response to feminist and socialist ideas. Above all, these pages are illuminated by

the enduring courage and passionate sense of justice of an extraordinary woman.

This is Linda DuTemple’s selection and she will lead the discussion.

Exploring the Different Sides of God

Jerry Wagen will moderate a panel discussion about 3 concepts of “god” as

male deity (traditional Judeo-Christian God the Father), goddess (e.g. James

Loveland’s theory of Gaia as Mother Earth) and an abstract ‘force’ that

develops and preserves order in the universe.

Listening Assistance Devices Thanks to a generous grant from the disbanded Sacramento UU Fellowship,

we were able to purchase listening assistance equipment. Federal ADA law

says we are supposed to have them, but we could not afford them

previously. These devices are not just for those wearing hearing

aids. They’re for anyone who has trouble hearing clearly on Sunday

mornings.

We not only have the transmitter and receivers, we have choices on

earphones. You can use your own ear buds, stereo headphone set, or we

can supply a tiny speaker for over your ear. You may wear any of these with or without a

hearing aid. And, if you are using a hearing aid that’s equipped with a "T" coil, you can use one

of our neck loops. It’s worn around the neck like a lanyard and the antenna is built into the cord.

Stop by the booth on the Fellowship patio (Look for the sign shown here), and let us fit you with

a comfortable device that will help you hear everyone who’s speaking at our services.

Helga Anker, UUFTC member and wife and widow of UUFTC founding member Wally

Anker, died at her home at Priest Ranch in late June. She grew up in East Germany during

World War II under Hitler’s Nazis and Stalin’s Red Army. In 1955 she met Wally in Berlin;

they married soon after. She and Wally lived at Priest Ranch, high above Moccasin and Don

Pedro Reservoir, since 1986, property that belonged to the family in the early days. She came

to be the matriarch of a clan that goes back six generations to those earliest days of Tuolumne

County. In recent years she could be found baking pastries for her children's restaurants, The

Lucky Buck and the Priest Station Café, which dates back to 1853. Her son Conrad, a local

legend, is a world-class alpinist known for his May 1999 discovery of the remains of George

Mallory, at 27,000 feet elevation on Mount Everest. Wally died in 2010.

Caring for the Earth Summer Film Series

We are once again being invited by the First Congregational Church of

Murphys to participate in a Summer Seminar Series. The first year we

joined them in a series related to White Privilege, and the second year they

delved into Immigration – New Americans.

This summer they are hosting a Caring for the Earth Summer Seminar Series which will

address climate change, food waste, and another segment that could include children. The last

in this series will be August 9th at 6 pm at the Eastman Education Building next to their Church

in Murphys. The first film is a short clip called The Story of Stuff and the other is

documentary called Dirty Business which is about the collection of plastics and the failings of

the global recycling process.

The Murphys church (FCCM) has developed a Green Team within their congregation and is

working to become certified as a Green Church. While we do not have a church building YET,

we may be able to start on the road to becoming a green church when we do have one. Our

own UUA has curricula both on becoming a Green Sanctuary and on Climate Change. FCCM

welcomes us. Please call Marilyn for more information 536-4923.

For the Fellowship

At their last meeting the UUFTC board approved Ann Leonard’s idea for a rummage sale and

as I recall when asked the whole congregation raised their hands indicating they had worthy

items to donate to this endeavor. Ann is working on a practical place to hold this event which

will probably be in October. PLEASE contact her about donating items and your interest in

helping with this effort. (209) 288-8774 We thank you.
