So many of you have had beautiful experiences raising your own children here. We know that many of those young and not-so-young adults continue on their faith journeys, pursuing vocational choices and family lives that reflect a deep assurance of God’s claim on their lives. Your children and grandchildren have also probably shared with you that their decision- making around church is different than it was for you when they were young. There are claims on their time and allegiance that simply were not present 30-40 years ago. Community is found in a wide variety of places, particularly around the sports teams who relentlessly fill Sunday morning schedules. And yet, there is still a desire to give children the story that brings meaning and purpose. There is still a longing for spiritual connection. There is still a desire to be in contact with other families whose pursuits extend beyond academic achievement and material gain. Enter Messy Church the church world’s latest best practice around welcoming new families. It is a monthly intergenerational gathering with an activity, worship, and a meal. It can be on any day that works. Here are some of the things current Messy Churches have to say. Messy Church is great because ..... * It is exciting. People are coming and engaging, who would not normally come to "church". It is "church". * Dads come and join in. * It gives opportunities to talk about Jesus to people who are not "churchgoers". * It brings new life to our church. It feels a natural way of sharing Christ. * People are developing skills they were unaware they had. God is helping us to grow closer and we are having fun. * It has brought a team of people together, willing to serve the community and share God's love with those who don't know Him. Your Children’s Ministry Team, chaired by Sandra Sciutto, and your Sunday School teachers invite you to be a part of Messy Church. Our Conference’s Director of New Ministries, Rev. Nicole Reilley, will be here to train us, Sunday, March 15, 11-2:30 pm. Lunch will be provided, and the training is free. By 2:30, we will have our first Messy Church planned. Let Pastor Paige or Sandra know that you want to be a part of this. We have already signed up some Child’s World Preschool teachers to work with us! This invitation (or spiritual calling?) is for you. Remember that we don’t have a large group of young parents to call on. If we want to reach new families, we will have to work together. Reaching Out to Families

I know you are interested in inviting new families to our church. So many of you have had beautiful experiences raising your own children here. We know that many of those young and not-so-young adults continue on their faith journeys, pursuing vocational choices and family lives that reflect a deep assurance of God’s claim on their lives.

Belong - Ministries that nurture a sense of belonging to GOD and this faith community

UUMC News and Notes By Barbara DeGroot

Many thanks to Lisa Holmes for creating the colorful bulletin board displays that have been popping up around the church campus. Using her design and artistic talents, Lisa highlights upcoming events on the church calendar and features activi-ties of groups around UUMC.

Kudos to Bonnie Wright, Linda Dressler and Carol Pukli for leading the discussion groups on Methodist Pastor Adam Hamilton’s book Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White. At least 50 members of the congregation are involved in the study, which calls on us to find common ground amid our dif-ferences. The book reminds us to love, respect and appreciate one another as mature Christians. Did you know there are more than 3,000 different Christian denominations in this country? What a force for good we would be if we all worked together!

UUMC Pride Day Saturday March 14, 8-12:00 Noon

Come help us clean, plant, decorate, fix-up & beautify our Sanctuary & Church campus for Easter & spring!

Young Adult Ministry Update Greetings UUMC, we have progress to report!

* First, regard-ing our mentor-ship program. We now have three linked re-lationships within our church where we are seeing our young adults beginning to step into relationships as mentees. I’m looking forward to seeing the awesome possibilities that will come out of this program.

* Second, we have just started a book study on Love & Rela-tionships. This is creating an opportunity to engage in a mean-ingful conversation with our young adults.

* Lastly, our College Persistence Program, by which we come alongside our local college students to help them succeed has been consistently gathering. The group, slowly but surely, has been growing. I would like to encourage our congregation to pray and think about how they can get involved in the lives of our young adults. We have a need for mentors to help with guidance. We also have need for our congregation members to sponsor one of our College Persistence Program gatherings by providing a meal. Thank you so much for your prayers and support for the next generation.

Blessings, Alvia

or press fabric. You will learn how to quilt and in the meantime enjoy he camaraderie of a supportive group of women. For more information, contact Bonnie Wright or Bonnie Bennett.

UUMC Quilters: Good Times and Good Deeds By Barbara De Groot and Bonnie Bennett

If you’ve suffered an illness or injury in the last 20 or so years you have probably received a colorful prayer quilt, created with love by UUMC’s quilters. More than 250 prayer quilts have been made by these talented women, who combine their love of fabric and sewing with camarade-rie and compassion.

The group was formed in the early 1990s when Joan Little-field was asked by Carol Pukli and other church women to share her quilting skills. Over the years, members have learned how to “stack and whack,” applique, and create other fabric-based projects. Innovative tools, discovered at quilt shows, have made the process easier and more fun.

UUMC’s quilters are part of a worldwide interfaith outreach ministry caller Prayers and Squares, which combines the gifts of a hand-tied quilt with the gift of prayer for someone in physical, emotional or spiritual need. The idea behind the quilts is quite simple, yet powerful. A heavy thread is used to make stitches through the quilt layers, and the ends are left free to be tied with a square knot.

On a Sunday morning at UUMC, the quilt is dedicated, then displayed after the service for members of the congregation to offer silent prayers for healing and to tie a knot. Center squares, marked with hearts, are left untied so family mem-bers can add their prayers as well. This gift of love is a state-ment of faith and a testimony to the quilters’ belief in God and the power of prayer.

In addition to the prayer quilts, the quilters have made more than 100 baby quilts for newborns in our congregation and for Child’s World Preschool families. Two Memorial Quilts hang in the Sanctuary, with squares of remembrance for church members who have passed on. Vibrantly patterned quilts made by the group adorn Williams Hall. Some of the quilters are also members of the Flying Geese quilters’ guild and have won prizes for their work in quilt competitions.

Members meet twice a month in Williams Hall to work on their own projects or help one another. On a recent Satur-day, some of the women were cutting fabric for patriotic quilts to be donated to families of Navy submariners. Oth-ers were working on a baby quilt for a grandnephew and a rose-printed quilt inspired by garden flowers. The group’s storage closet is a treasure trove, stocked with fabrics or-ganized by motif: sports, holidays, colors, vintage designs; a bookshelf holds hundreds of quilt patterns.

The UUMC Quilters welcome newcomers to the group. You don’t even have to know how to sew, they say. Members are learning new skills and improving their craft constantly. Extra hands are always needed to help sandwich a quilt top

Your Apportionments at Work Imagine No Malaria 2014

By Karen Rhoads

The United Methodist Church through its Imagine No Malaria program part-nered with the Sierra Leone govern-ment for the second time to supply treated nets nationwide. The first ever successful mosquito net campaign was conducted in November, 2010. The 2014 campaign replaced or supple-mented the nets to these same fami-lies.

Check out this video which shows the photographer's revisit to the same communities in Sierra Leone, demon-strating the great impact of this pro-gram. Link to You Tube to watch short video: http://youtu.be/FOPWk907wus

Opportunities to Volunteer…

Starting this month, UUMC will be using two new web-sites: Idealist.org and Volunteermatch.org. Both sites list opportunities for people seeking positive volunteer work. We’ll be posting some Outreach Events online where any-one who has interest in helping out will be able to contact me, you, or the church for more information. If you have a need for helpers or item donations, please feel free to email me with event specifics and I'll add it to our page. It’s a great chance to meet community members while contributing to some wonderful work!

THE KITCHEN IS COMING…

I’m happy to announce fundraising for the kitchen remodel is nearly complete. We have already received close to our $40,000.00 goal. Can you believe it? Thank you! The Board of Trustees is so excited and honored by the generous support from each of you. If you are still pondering, it’s not too late.

Although the Fellowship Hall will continue to be used during the construction process, we will be removing everything from the kitchen the first week of March, with demolition scheduled for the following week. Jack Lucas, who has helped build many a “Habitat for Humanity” home will be overseeing the building process with support from Chuck Gramlich and his crew in the more technical areas. Jack has requested the use of a Garage Vac during the construction period. If you have one we can bor-row please let us know, we would be very grateful.

If you would like to join the “Kitchen Crew” please contact: Jack Lucas 949-551-4773, [email protected], or

Mitzi Holmes 949-854-0749, [email protected].

Soon we’ll celebrate a new kitchen with a party for all of you!

Many, many thanks for the wonderful cards, kind comments, flowers, and concerned phone calls I received after my brother’s diagnosis and subsequent death. As usual, my church family was there to console and comfort me. I am glad he is no longer in pain, but I still miss his slightly off beat ways. Thank you again for all you have done. You are the best!

Request for Suggestions on How to Use the Gift from Dr. Janice Clark

Last year UUMC received a very generous gift of about $215,000 from the estate of Dr. Janice Clark. The terms of the gift were not specific on how it was to be used, so our church congregation and leaders have the opportunity to dis-cern how to best use this money.

The Vision and Strategy Committee has asked me to collect suggestions from our congregation on possible uses for this gift. Your suggestions would be appreciated, and can be sent to me at [email protected]

The deadline for suggestions is March 15, 2015.

I will compile all of the suggestions and convene a special Clark committee comprised of the Vision and Strategy Committee, and Chairpersons from SPRC, Trustees, Finance, Endowment, and Stewardship Committees. This special committee will review and discuss all of the submitted suggestions and make recommendations on the best uses of the Clark gift to meet the goals and objectives of UUMC. The Committee’s recommendations will then be presented at the next occurring Church Quarterly Conference for review and final approval by the conference attendees. Thank you for your suggestions.
