This thesis project was part of the academic consortium REACH-AUTand supported by ZonMW Grant no. 70-73400-98-002. The researchproject presented in Chapter 7 was supported by the Van der GaagGrant of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences no.WF/3193 and the Amsterdam University Fund.

SB assembledthe database, supervised the analysis and revised the article. The Ne-therlands Autism Register provided the data. HMG developed theconcept, supervised the analysis and revised the article.

Marie Katharina Deserno was born in Aachen (Germany) on the 24thof February 1990. After the 7th Montessori school (Amsterdam) andthe Altes Gymnasium (Oldenburg, Germany), she studied Psycho-logy and Literature at the University of Amsterdam, obtaining herBachelor’s and Research Master’s degree (cum laude). During herResearch Master’s she became a visiting student at the Max PlanckInstitute for Human Development in Berlin (Germany) in 2013 withprof. dr. Michaela Riediger to deepen her knowledge on time-seriesmodels and development. She started her PhD project in October 2014under supervision of prof. dr. Hilde M. Geurts, prof. dr. Denny Bors-boom and dr. Sander Begeer. To gain a deeper understanding of de-velopmental models, she spent two months at dr. Rogier A. Kievit’slab at the MRC-CBU in Cambridge (UK).
