A week after ETSU played the role of David in a 23-3 win over FBS member Vanderbilt, UVA Wise will try to slay Goliath when the NCAA Division II Cavaliers travel to face the FCS Buccaneers Saturday at 7:30 p.m inside William B. Greene Stadium.

For Dane Damron's UVA Wise squad to make history, replicating last week's performance would be a start. Redshirt sophomore Lendon Redwine earned South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of The Week after completing 24-of-34 passes for a career-high 326 yards and career-best six touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, freshman DaQuandre Taylor registered a career-high seven tackles while recording a pair of sacks en route to SAC Defensive Player of The Week accolades.

Redwine had plenty of options to throw the ball to as 12 different Cavaliers caught passes in the win.

Utah State transfer Devin Heckstall led the way, who hauled in five catches for 116 yards and two scores. Heckstall was one of three UVA Wise receivers to grab a pair of touchdown passes as JJ McNeil III caught four passes for 85 yards to go with two scores and Caleb Martin caught six balls for 66 yards and two touchdowns.

Taylor wasn't the only defensive player causing havoc in the backfield either. Overall, 13 Cavs had at least 1/2 sack, with Michael Rowser adding a pair of forced fumbles to his three-tackle day.

Daquan Battle and Jerry Kinney picked off a pass each in the secondary as first-year defensive coordinator Matthew White's unit recorded the program's first shutout since 2017.

ETSU moved to 15th in the AFCA Coaches' Poll and 19th in the Stats FCS Poll following its upset win at Vanderbilt. The Bucs stymied the Commodores' rushing attack holding the Southeastern Conference foe to just 85 rushing yards on 31 attempts in the victory.

SoCon Defensive Player of the Week Stephen Scott had 10 tackles and a 27-yard fumble recovery touchdown to lead the defense. Meanwhile, Karon Delince and Sheldon Arnold each picked off a pass as the school scored its first win over a Power-5 opponent since defeating North Carolina State in 1987.

ETSU Head Coach Randy Sanders is no stranger to big games and big wins. The coach has been part of two national championship-winning teams at the FBS level (Tennessee '98 and Florida State '13). The former Volunteer is now in his fourth season with the Bucs and holds a 16-15 record with the school.

Next week, ETSU will have its final non-conference tune-up before beginning SoCon action when Delaware State visits Johnson City while UVA Wise will begin SAC play on the road at Mars Hill.

UVA Wise set a school and SAC record with 13 sacks in

last week's win.

Quarterback Lendon Redwine passed for a NCAA Division

II school era record six touchdowns last week.

Devin Heckstall, JJ McNeil III and Caleb Martin all caught a pair of touchdown passes last

week.

UVA Wise tallied 15 tackles for loss against Virginia University-

Lynchburg.

Taylor was a menace on defense as the linebacker tallied a pair of sacks to spearhead a unit that set a school and conference record with 13 sacks. Overall, the Charlottesville, Va. product amassed seven tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble.

WISE - - Lendon Redwine set a UVA Wise NCAA Division II era school record with six touchdown passes while the Cavalier defense established a new school and South Atlantic Conference record with 13 sacks in Saturday's season opening 54-0 defeat over Virginia University-Lynchburg at Carl Smith Stadium.

UVA Wise (1-0) put the game out of reach in the first quarter of the contest as Dane Dam-ron's team erupted for 23 first quarter points. Redwine fired a trio of touchdown passes in the first 15 minutes as he hooked up with Caleb Martin on a pair of touchdown strikes in the game's first 10 minutes.

The signal caller's other first quarter touchdown pass went to Devin Heckstall. The Utah State transfer had an impressive debut in a UVA Wise uniform as the receiver hauled in five catches for 116 yards and a pair of scores.

JJ McNeil III caught two second quarter touchdown passes in the second quarter as he caught a 9-yard scoring strike and a 22-yard touchdown pass as the Cavaliers went to halftime in front 37-0.

VUL (0-1) failed to muster much of anything positive in the game. The Dragons amassed more punting yards (324) than total offense (202) while also being penalized 20 times for 149 yards.

UVA Wise's defense lived in the VUL backfield all afternoon. Linebacker DaQuandre Taylor had a career day defensively. The redshirt freshman finished with seven tackles, two sacks, three tackles for loss and a forced fumble to spearhead the Cavs' defensive effort.

Michael Rowser added a pair of forced fumbles for first- year defensive coordinator Mat-thew White while Daquan Battle added a trio of tackles and an interception to his stat ledger.

Redwine finished with a career-high 326 passing yards to go with his six touchdown pass-es. Martin finished with 66 receiving yards on six catches, McNeill III added 85 receiving yards and Jamal Fisher grabbed three catches for 37 yards.

On the ground, the Cavs gained 110 yards on 41 attempts, led by Jaevon Gillespie's 34 yards.

With the win, UVA Wise improves to 4-2 all-time in season openers under Damron and is 2-0 against VUL.

Next week, the Cavs visit NCAA FCS member East Tennessee State University in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Dane Damron will begin his sixth season guiding the football program at UVA Wise in the fall of 2021. In Damron's first five seasons, the Cavaliers have compiled 18 victories, including the pro-gram's only winning season as a NCAA Division II member when his squad posted a 6-5 mark in 2016.

Last spring, UVA Wise played an abbreviated schedule due to COVID-19 and the program posted a 1-2 record with the win coming in a 40-28 tri-umph at Mars Hill. The Cavs dropped two games by a combined nine points, includ-ing a three-point quadruple overtime defeat to perennial power Carson-Newman.

In 2019, UVA Wise played its first season as a member of the South Atlantic Conference where the team claimed its

first ever SAC win with a 21-14 victory over Catawba College. At the conclusion of the season, return specialist Demetrius Mann earned First-Team All-America status by the College Football Network as he led the league and finished second in NCAA Division II with 20.9 yards per kick return. In addition to Mann, three other Cavs earned All-SAC accolades.

Three seasons ago, UVA Wise overcame numerous injuries to play their best ball at the end of the season. After falling 27-15 to eventual national semifinalist Notre Dame College in the team’s final home game of the season, Damron's team claimed its first ever victory over regional power Shepherd University, 21-16, in the season finale. The win allowed the Cavs to finish the season with wins in three of the team’s final five games after beginning the year 1-4.

Under Damron’s direction, UVA Wise has seen improvement in numerous facets of the game on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

The Cavs rushed for 1,233 yards in 2016 before gaining 1,299 yards on the ground in 2017. In 2018, the program went over 1,200 yards for the third consecutive season by posting 1,219 yards on the ground. In the spring of 2021, the team gained 108.3 yards per game on the ground. This comes after the program posted just 767 yards on the ground in 2015.

Through the air, UVA Wise passed for at least 2,500 yards in each of Damron’s first two seasons. In the spring, the Cavs posted 356.7 passing yards per game while completing 66.9 percent of their pass attempts.

On defense, UVA Wise has intercepted 54 passes over the past five seasons. The improved secondary play has been the staple of the team as the Cavs have ranked among the best in all of NCAA Divi-sion II in the Damron era.

In 2016, UVA Wise was fifth nationally in red zone defense as op-ponents scored on just 61.7 percent of their trips while ranking 14th in tackles for loss as the unit averaged 8.9 per contest. A year later, the Cavs ranked 13th nationally in third down conversion defense by holding opponents to a 30.1 percent conversion percentage while finishing 22nd nationally with 15 intercepted passes. In 2018, the defense put together its best season to date as a NCAA Division II institution. UVA Wise finished third in tackles for loss per game (9.9), 18th in passing yards allowed per game (168.1), 18th in fourth down conversion defense (.300), 19th in total defense (302.6 ypg) and 23rd in third down conversion defense (.311),

The trend continued in 2019 as the defense ranked 15th nationally in passing yards allowed per game (167.5) while holding opponents to a completion percentage of 51.1 percent.

The turnaround has resulted in a plethora of awards for football student-athletes. Linebacker Zachary Blair earned Second-Team All-America acclaim, in addition to First-Team All-Region and First-Team All-MEC honors as a senior in 2016. Meanwhile, placekicker Trent Martin joined Blair as an all-region and all-conference pick while tailback Carlton Griffith and defensive back Ed Kargbo earned All-MEC Honorable Mention acclaim that same season.

In 2017, offensive lineman Will White, linebacker Donavan Montague, Kargbo, defensive back Andre Hamilton and kick returner Marquis

Hamilton were named All-MEC Second-Team honorees.

Hamilton returned two kicks for a touchdown while averaging 37.1 yards per return, he finished one kick return shy of qualifying as the national leader in the category.

In the classroom, Montague was named CoSIDA Academic All-District. The linebacker posted a 3.57 grade point average as a biology major and was inducted into the school’s elite Darden Society.

In 2018, Marcus Tarrer earned Third-Team All-Region and All-MEC First-Team while four other Cavs received all-conference recognition. A year ago, Demetrius Mann was named First-Team All-America as a kick returner while three other Cavaliers earned All-SAC honors.

Named the fourth head football coach in school history in Decem-ber of 2015, Damron came to the College after a seven-year stint at Eastern Kentucky University.

With the Colonels, Damron spent five years as the team’s offensive coordinator. A 22-year coaching veteran, he has been known for his offensive prowess. In his final season at EKU, Damron’s offense set a NCAA FCS record for offensive snaps in a game with 123 against Murray State. In 2012, the Colonels averaged more than 200 rushing yards and 200 passing yards per game. The Colonels rushed for at least 1,700 yards in each of Damron’s five years directing the offense.

During Damron’s tenure as offensive coordinator, EKU posted at least six wins in all five seasons he oversaw the offense. The Colo-nels tallied eight wins in 2012 before posting nine victories in 2014. Overall, Damron’s teams recorded 69-47 wins and losses during his collegiate coaching career.

Damron began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at EKU in 1994. Following a stint at Morehead State, he became the offensive coordinator at George Jenkins High School in Lakeland, Florida. Later, he moved on to Lake Gibson High School in Lakeland where the school reached previously unchartered waters on the football field. The Braves won their first playoff game in school history and advanced to the regional finals in each of Damron’s last two seasons as head coach.

Following his time in Florida, the coach returned to his native state of Kentucky to become the head coach at Boyd County High School in Ashland, Kentucky. Damron’s track record of success continued with the Lions as they won a playoff game in three consecutive seasons. Matthew WhiteDefensive Coordinator

Matthew White is in his first season as defensive coordina-tor. Previously, White served as the Cavaliers’ defensive line coach while also overseeing the team’s strength and condition-ing program.

“I am pleased to announce Matt White as our defensive coordi-nator,” remarked Head Coach Dane Damron after White’s promotion. “Matt brings high energy and has been success-

ful as a head coach at the junior college level and as a coordinator at Kentucky Christian University.”

A native of Montana, White played collegiate football at the University of Sioux Falls before beginning his coaching career at Montana Tech University.

Following his stint at Montana Tech, White moved to West Hills Community College, where he coached linebackers in 2015. From there, the coach spent four years at Los Angeles Valley College serving as the program’s running backs, defensive backs and line-backers coach at various points before becoming the school’s defensive coordinator.

White would eventually become the head coach at Los Angeles Valley where he guided the school to a winning record behind a defense that was ranked top 20 nationally in scoring (17 points per game) and an offense that posted 45.8 points per game.

The coach then headed east to Kentucky Christian where he was associate head coach and defensive coordinator for the Knights in 2019.

White takes over a defensive unit at UVA Wise that has consistently ranked near the top of the confer-ence over the last four seasons. In 2019, the Cavs ranked 15th nationally in passing defense as the unit held opponents to 167.5 yards per game.

“We will continue to do what we have done schemati-cally here since 2016,” added Damron. “Coach White will add his flavor to it but, we are who we are.”

White obtained a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Sioux Falls and a master’s degree in human health and performance from Fort Hays State University.

Zach LewisOffensive Coordinator

Zach Lewis is in his third season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at UVA Wise. This spring the Cavaliers had their best offensive per-formance under Lewis as the unit passed for 356.7 yards per game while averaging 465 yards of offense per game. UVA Wise capped the season with a 40-point outburst in a win at Mars Hill.

In 2019, Lewis' offense saw seven players reach double digit reception totals as Cavalier

quarterbacks completed 176 passes

The coach came to UVA Wise after having the same posi-tion at Alderson Broaddus.

“I’m very excited to announce Zach Lewis as our offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach,” Head Coach Dane Damron remarked shortly after his hiring. “He is a high energy guy that will inject a new attitude and bring enthusi-asm to our offense.”

At Alderson Broaddus, Lewis oversaw a Battlers’ offense that ranked 23rd nationally in scoring at 40.4 points per game. AB rushed for 189.4 yards per game while passing for 256 yards a contest in 2018.

Under Lewis’ direction, student-athletes established five new school records at AB as the coach served as the school’s offensive play caller.

“I’m very excited to be part of the Cavalier family,” Lewis said shortly after his hiring. “Coach Damron and this staff has done a great job in building such a special atmosphere and I hope to aid continue that.”

A four-year starter at Moorehead State University, Lewis set school records for passing yards, completions and touch-downs during his collegiate career.

As a coach, the new offensive coordinator spent four years at his alma mater where he worked as the slot receivers coach and video coordinator in 2014 before overseeing re-cruiting and directing quarterbacks for three seasons.

While at Moorehead State, Lewis helped develop conference player of the year Austin Gahafer who passed for a league record 11,918 yards during his career. The Eagles led the Pioneer Football League in passing offense in 2015 and 2016 while also leading the conference in passing touchdowns in back-to-back seasons.

“After talking with Zach and talking with people about him, there was no doubt that he would be the perfect guy to take over our offense,” Damron stated. “We are on the same page with what we want our offense to be and he brings a great presence to the offensive staff room; I have been aware of Coach Lewis and what he has been doing for the last couple of seasons and I couldn’t be happier to have him join us in Wise.”

A 2014 graduate of Moorehead State, Lewis obtained a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. He and his wife Alyson, a trainer at UVA Wise were married during the offseason.
