IntroductionTheInterdisciplinaryTheatreStudiesProgramatUW-MadisonpreparesMAandPhDstudentstopursueinnovative,interdisciplinaryresearchintheatrestudies,andtorelatetheirscholarlyresearchtoproductionand/orteaching.TheMAcanserveasapreparatorydegreeforthePhD,orasaterminaldegreeforstudentsseekinggreaterexposuretotheatrestudiesbeyondtheundergraduatedegree.Throughrigorouscourseworkandparticipationinavarietyofartisticproductionprocesses,thePhDprogrampreparesgraduatesforpositionsascollegeanduniversityresearchersandinstructorsaswellaspublicintellectuals,dramaturgs,andcritics.Theprogram’sfacultyareleadersintheatreandperformancestudies,whosescholarshipandengagementwiththeprofessionisrecognizednationallyandinternationally.OurstudentsworkcloselywithfacultywhohaveateachingappointmentinITS,aswellasaffiliatedITSfacultymembersinsuchfieldsasAfricanStudies,African-Americanstudies,Art,ArtHistory,Classics,CommunicationArts,English,FrenchandItalian,GenderandWomen’sStudies,German,Music,SpanishandPortuguese,TheatreandDrama,andVisualCultures.InterdisciplinaryTheatreStudiesattractsstudentsfromacrosstheUnitedStatesaswellasinternationally,andcreatesopportunitiesforstudentstoengageinteachingandpracticeaspartoftheirresearch.Manyofourstudentsparticipateintheatreandperformancegroupsasactors,dramaturgs,directors,devisers,designersandplaywrightsonandoffcampus,allowingthemtoexperimentwithawiderangeofperformancemodes.Atthesametime,allstudentsareexpectedtodevelopastrongfoundationincurrentpracticesintheatrehistory,theatreandperformancetheoryanddramaticliterature,inadditiontotheirspecificareaofinterest.TheMAprogramrequirescompletionof30credits,including5-8thesiscreditstakeninthefinalsemesterofcoursework;thePhDprogramrequirescompletionof69credithoursforcourseworkandadissertation.ContinuingMAsmaytransferupto24credithourstowardsthePhDrequirements;incomingPhDswhohavereceivedtheMAfromanotherinstitutionmaytransferamaximumof18credithoursinconsultationwiththeProgramDirector.ThisHandbookprovidesyouwithgeneralinformationaboutourprograms,includingrequirements,opportunities,andtimelines.Whileitoffersanimportantoverviewofgraduatestudiesinthedepartmentandoncampus,itisonlyaguide.Youshouldstayinclosetouchwithyouradvisor,theProgramDirector,theGraduateCoordinator,theDepartmentAdministrator,andotheradministrators,professors,andmentorstogainthemostfromyourexperienceatUW-Madison.

OverviewofMAandPhDProgramsDegreeCurriculaandRequirementsDuringthefirstsemesterofstudy,allnewMAandPhDstudentstaketheproseminar,IntroductiontoResearchinTheatre,tofamiliarizethemselveswiththemethodsandmaterialsoftheatreresearchandwriting.Thereafter,Master'sstudentsinITSconstructanindividualizedprogramofstudyculminatinginathesis.PhDstudentstakearangeoflecture/discussionandseminar-stylecoursesindramaticliterature,history,andtheoryapprovedbytheInterdisciplinaryTheatreStudiesProgram;constructaMinoronthebasisofcoursesinotherrelateddisciplines;andfulfillforeignlanguagerequirements.Theyareadmittedtodissertatorstatusafteranoralexambasedonaselectionofresearchpapers(PrelimA),followedbyadissertationproposaldefense(PrelimB),andthefinaldissertationdefense.MAandPhDstudentsalsoparticipateintheproductionprocessbyservingasdramaturgs,assistantdirectors,performers,designers,ortechnicians,workingontheatreandperformanceprojectsonandoffcampus.LearningGoalsandObjectivesfortheMAandPhD

o Thoroughfamiliaritywiththetheory,history,andpracticeofdramaandtheatreascollaborativeculturalforms

o Historicalunderstandingofthediversegloballocationsoftheatreandtheinterculturalcontactamongtheatretraditions,especiallyasthesemultiplyinthemodernandcontemporaryperiodsandperformance,aswellastodiverseculturalactivities

TheatreforYouthSpecializationTheTheatreforYouthProgramisacomprehensiveprogramforgraduatestudentswhoareinterestedininterdisciplinarystudiesintheatreanddramawith,by,andforchildrenandyouth.TFYstudentstrainintheartisticandeducationalaspectsoftheatreanddrama,theoreticalandpractical,formalandinformal,productionandprocessoriented,withandforyouth.Astrongemphasisisplacedoncommunityoutreachandinvolvement.TheTheatreforYouthProgramatUW-Madisonstressesthepotentialandvalueoftheatreanddramabothasanartformandasateachingmethod.Coursesofferedincorporatetheory,history,methodology,andpractice.InadditiontoTFYintheUnitedStates,theprogrammaintainsastronginternationalfocusthroughcoursecontent,methods,andproductions.

QualifiedstudentsmaypursueaMAorPhDdegreeinthebroadareaofTheatreForYouth,whichincludesTheatreforYoungAudiences(TYA),DramaforTeachingandLearning,andAppliedTheatre.Thestudentisexpectedtodevelopathoroughbackgroundintraditional

theatre,i.e.,worlddrama,history,criticism,andproduction.Inaddition,thestudentmaydevelopandpursuespecialinterests,research,andproductionintheatreanddramaasitappliesspecificallytoyoungpeople,pre-Ktoposthighschool.ConsiderablecourseworkisexpectedinotherdepartmentsoftheUniversitytoenhancethisareaofspecialization.

CandidatesfortheMAdegreewithaspecializationinTheatreforYouthwillbeadvisedbytheDirectoroftheTheatreforYouthProgramandmusttakeatleast12creditsinTheatreforYouth.Theywillgeartheirthesistoanyaspectofthefieldoftheatreforyouthinconsultationwiththeiradvisor.Thethesisshouldbeaproductofthestudent'sindependentresearch,carriedoutinconsultationwiththeAdvisorandotherfacultymemberswithexpertiseinthefield.

PhDstudentsinTheatreforYouthareadvisedbytheDirectoroftheTheatreforYouthProgram,andtaketheTFYcoursesofferedbythedepartmentinthecourseoftheirstudies.TheywillgeartheirdissertationtoanyaspectofthefieldofTheatreforYouthinconsultationwiththeiradvisor.Inaddition,atleastoneoftheirthreePrelimApapersshoulddiscussanaspectoftheatreanddramaforyouth.

TeachingandProjectAssistantshipsTheInterdisciplinaryTheatreStudiesProgramsupportsitsgraduatestudentsasmuchaspossiblethroughTeaching,Research,andProjectAssistantships.Itisourpolicytoprovideassistance,whenavailable,foratleastthreeyearstoPhDstudents.MAsmatriculatingintothePhDprogrammayreceiveatleastfouryearsofsupportiftheyhadalreadyreceivedayearofassistantshipduringtheMA,althoughassistantshipsforMAstudentsareexceptionalratherthancustomary.CurrentStudentsinterestedinreceivinganykindofassistantshipmustfilloutanapplicationforadepartmentassistantshipwiththeITSGraduateCoordinator,BrendaWeiss,byJanuary15eachyear.Becauseofthequalityandrangeofskillsamongourgraduatestudents,anincreasingnumber,aftertheyfinishcoursework,havereceivedTApositionsindepartmentsotherthanInterdisciplinaryTheatreStudies.Weencouragequalifiedstudentstoexploretheseoptions;however,itisimportantforgraduatestudentsreceivingaPhDinInterdisciplinaryTheatreStudiestoteachcoursesrelatedtoourprogram(ifanassignmentisavailabletothem)foratleastoneyearduringtheiryearsofcourseworkinordertoobtainteachingexperiencespecificallyintheatrestudies.ItisourpolicythatanyTA/PA/RAsupportfromotherdepartmentscountstowardsthethreeormoreyearsofsupportwehopetoprovidestudentswhiletheyaredoingtheircoursework.ReadershipsInadditiontothelonger-termsupportoutlinedabove,theprogramoffersmoremodestsupportintheformofscholarshipsand/orreaderships.Readersarehiredonanhourlybasistoassistfacultymembersingradingpapersforlargelecturecourseswith40-60students.Theseareadhocappointments.

TheMAProgramTheMasterofArtsdegreeinInterdisciplinaryTheatreStudiescanserveasthepreparatorydegreeforthePhD,orasaterminaldegreeforstudentsseekinggreaterexposuretotheatre,dramaandperformancestudiesbeyondtheundergraduatedegree.MARequirements(30Credits,24minimuminITSCourses)

o ProseminarinTheatreResearch(ENGL850)Allstudentsmusttakethiscourseinthefallsemesteroftheirfirstyearaspartoftheir30credits.

o Significantparticipationinanapprovedtheatreproductionorperformanceeventasdramaturg,director,assistantdirector,stagemanager,assistantstagemanager,actor,designer,ortechnician.

o Thesis.AcandidatefortheMAdegreemustchooseanadvisorfromtheInterdisciplinaryTheatreStudiesfacultybeforetheendofthesecondsemesterofstudy,andprepareathesisunderhis/herguidance.Beforethedegreecanbeconferred,thethesismustbeapprovedbyacommitteeconsistingofthreefacultymembers--theadvisor,atleastonemorefacultymemberfromInterdisciplinaryTheatreStudies,andoneothermember--andfiledinMemorialLibraryaccordingtoGraduateSchooldeadlines.Thethesisshouldrepresentindependentresearchcarriedoutbythestudentinconsultationwiththethesiscommittee.Studentsenrollin5-8credithoursforcompletingtheirthesis.

o Aone-houroraldefenseofthethesis.Atthedefense,thestudentexplainsthecontributionofthethesistothefieldofstudy,andrespondstoquestionsandcritiquesbythecommittee.CompletionoftheMArequiressuccessfulcompletionofthethesisandasatisfactorydefenseofit.

MAProgramTimelineTheMAprogramisdesignedtobecompletedin3-4semestersoffull-timestudy.MAProgram:1st

DuringWelcomeWeekofthefallsemester,allstudentsreceivetheInterdisciplinaryTheatreStudiesMAandPhDHandbookwhichcontainscurrentpoliciesaboutprogramrequirementsandprogress.TheyregisterfortheITSProseminarandareadvisedbyProgramDirectoraboutotherappropriatecourses.BecauseMAstudentsmustchooseanadvisorbytheendoftheirsecondsemester,theyareencouragedtotakecourseswithvariousmembersoftheprogramfacultyduringthefirstyearofstudy.Allfirst-yearMAstudentsareassessedinformallyduringtheSpringsemesterofthefirstyear.StudentswhoarestrugglingwithcourseworkorresearchwritingmustmeetwiththeProgramDirectorandtheiradvisortodiscussfallcoursesandstrategiesforimprovement.MAProgram:2nd

Year

Secondyearstudentscontinuecompletingcourserequirements,withanemphasisontheproductionrequirement,andbeginworkonathesisproposalinconsultationwiththeiradvisor.Aftertheadvisorhasapprovedthethesisproposal,thestudentselectsathesiscommitteeconsistingoftheadvisorandtwootherfacultymembers,includingatleastoneothermemberfromtheInterdisciplinaryTheatreStudiesProgram.StudentspetitionforathesisdefensebywritingtotheProgramDirector,andscheduleadateincoordinationwiththeirthesiscommitteeandtheGraduateCoordinator.

TheThesisTheMAthesisisascholarlycontributiontoknowledgethatatteststothestudent'sabilitytodefine,research,andarticulateinwritingatopicrelatedtothefieldofInterdisciplinaryTheatreStudies.Topicsshouldbediscussedwiththeadvisor,andmayfocusonanyaspectoftheatre,dramaandperformancestudies,dependingonthestudents’interests.StudentswhoplantopetitionforadmissiontothePhDprogrammaychooseatopicrelatedtotheirpossibleareaoffocusinthePhDprogram.TheMAthesisistypically75-90double-spacedpagesinlength,includingthebibliography.MAstudentsinTheatreforYouthwhoarenotplanningtoapplyforthePhDprogrammaydoanalternativethesisprojectinconsultationwiththeDirectoroftheTheatreforYouthprogram.Studentsmustdistributethethesistocommitteememberstwoweekspriortothedefense,bysendingacopyofthethesistothegraduatecoordinator.ChoosinganMAAdvisorTheGraduateSchoolrequireseverygraduatestudenttohaveanacademicadvisor.Theadvisoristheprimarycontactpersonwithinthedepartment,andthefacultymemberwhowillguidethestudentmostcloselythroughhis/herdegreeprogram.MAstudentsworkwiththeProgramDirectorduringtheirfirstsemesterintheprogram.InadditiontomeetingwiththeDirectortoplantheFallcourseschedule,studentsbegintodiscusspossibilitiesforapermanentadvisor.TheDirectorandtheGraduateCoordinatorcontinuetoserveastheliaisonbetweentheGraduateSchoolandgraduatestudents,workingcloselywiththestudent'sadvisoronsuchissuesasgraduationrequirements.Studentsareresponsible,however,formakingsuretheyareontrack,meetingdeadlines,andfillingoutappropriateapplications.Studentsareexpected,however,tostayinformedaboutbothGraduateSchoolanddepartmentalrequirements.MAwithSpecializationinTheatreforYouthCandidatesfortheMAdegreewithaspecializationinTheatreforYouthwillbeadvisedbytheDirectoroftheTheatreforYouthProgramandmusttakeatleast12creditsinTheatreforYouth.Theywillgeartheirthesistoanyaspectofthefieldoftheatreforyouthinconsultationwiththeiradvisor.Thethesisshouldbeaproductofthestudent'sindependentresearch,carriedoutinconsultationwiththeAdvisorandotherfacultymemberswithexpertiseinthefield.Admission/ContinuationintothePhDprogramMAstudentswhoplantocontinueintothePhDprogrammustpetitiontheProgramDirectortorequestadmissiontothePhDprogrambyWelcomeWeekoftheirfinalsemester.Tobeconsideredforadmissionandfunding,studentsshouldideallyplantodefendtheirthesisby30March;ifthedefenseisscheduledforalaterdate,bothadmissionandfundingwillbeconditionalonthesatisfactorycompletion,approval,andfinalsubmissionofthethesis.StudentswhodefendinthefallsemesterandareadmittedtothePhDprogrammayentertheprograminthespringsemester,butfundingforthatsemesterwouldbeunusual.InsuchcasesenrollmentinthePhDprogrammaybedeferredtothefallsemesterofthefollowingacademicyear.AdmissiontothePhDprogramisnotautomaticorguaranteed;itdepends,amongotherfactors,onasuccessfulthesisdefenseandtherecommendationofITSfaculty.

ThePhDProgramThePhDprograminInterdisciplinaryTheatreStudiesattheUniversityofWisconsin-Madisonpreparesstudentstoassumeprofessionalpositionsasscholars,educators,andresearchersintheatreandperformancestudies.Thedegreerequirementsaredesignedtobalancetheoreticalinvestigationswithpracticalapplications,andtoallowforinterdisciplinarystudiesthatenhancethevalueandpossibilitiesofthedegree.Studentsareencouragedtoparticipateinnationalandinternationalprofessionalmeetings,andtopublishinthefield.PhDProgramTimelinePhDcourseworkisusuallycompletedwithinsixsemesters.Moststudentscompletetheirdissertationsfourtosixsemestersafterfinishingtheircoursework.ThenumberofMAcreditstransferred,thetimetakentocompletethelanguagerequirements,andotherfactorscanaffectthistimeline.Coursework:69Credits,or23CoursesCoursesnumbered300andabovecounttowardagraduatedegree.Coursesnumberedfrom301-699carrybothundergraduateandgraduatecredit,butthecoursemustprovideaseparatesyllabusforgraduatestudents.Coursesnumberedfrom700-800carrygraduatecreditonly.Seminarsarenumbered900andabove.

• 8coursesindramaticliterature,history,andtheoryandcriticism,includingonerequiredcourse(ProseminarinTheatreResearch)takeninthefallsemesterofthefirstyear.

• 3practicumcourses(coursesthatengagedirectlywiththepracticeoftheatreandperformance).

• 8coursesgroupedtoprovideanareaofspecializationwithinthemajorfieldofstudy.• 4coursesinfieldsotherthanInterdisciplinaryTheatreStudies,groupedtocomplement

theareaofspecializationandthemajor.Students,inconsultationwiththeiradvisor,mightchooseaPhDminorsupervisedbyanotherdepartmentorprogram,ortheymightselecttocompleteadistributedminor.

• 3seminarsinthefieldofInterdisciplinaryTheatreStudies,eithertaughtbyITSfacultyordesignatedasappropriateforthemajorbytheITSProgram.

OverthecourseofthePhDprogram,studentsmustacquirecomprehensiveknowledgeofthefieldbytakingatleasttwocoursesatthe500-leveloraboveineachofthefollowingareasoftheatreresearch:dramaticliterature,theatrehistory,andtheatreandperformancetheory.Studentsmustworkwiththeiradvisorstoensurethatbothdepthandbreadthareachievedthroughthebalanceofcoursesandthefinalpaperswrittenforthecourses.Nomorethantwocourses(outofthetotalofsix)takeninotherdepartmentsmaycounttowardssatisfyingthisrequirement,andwouldneedtobeapprovedbythestudent'sadvisor.Upper-levelcoursestakenatanotheruniversityorindependentstudycoursesdonotcounttowardssatisfyingthisrequirement. UptotwoindependentstudyresearchcoursesmaybetakenwithindividualfacultymembersduringthePhDcoursework.Nomorethanoneindependentstudymaybetakenwithanyonefacultymember,eitherwithinoroutsidetheITSfacultyandstaff.AstudentwhowishestorequestanexceptionduetospecialcircumstancesmustapplytotheITSProgramforawaiverofthispolicy.

AreaofSpecializationInselectingtheircoursework,studentsdevelopanareaofspecialization,basedonthefocusoftheirscholarlywork.Theareaofspecializationmaybedefinedbyagenre,atheoreticalapproachormethodology,atimeperiodand/orageographicalorlinguisticarea.Itshouldbefocused,yetbroadenoughforstudentstotakeeightcoursesrelevanttoit.AtleastfouroftheeightcoursesintheareaofspecializationmustbetakenintheInterdisciplinaryTheatreStudiesProgram(theusualnumberissix).Generally,studentsdefineanareaofspecializationonlywhentheyarenearthecompletionofcoursework,anditispossibletoreorganizethechecklistatthattimetoreflecttheemergingareaofspecialization.TheMinorStudentsmustincludeaMinorconsistingof4courses(12hours)fromoutsidethefieldofITSaspartoftheircoursework.Thecoursescanbetakeninasingleoutsidedepartment(aFocusedMinor),ordistributedovertwoormoredepartments(aDistributedMinor).Anoutsidedepartmentminorrequirestheapprovalofthedepartmenthousingit.Adistributedminorrequiresapprovalbythestudent’sadvisor.PortfolioRevisionCreditIntheirfinalsemesterofcoursework,studentsmayenrollinadirectedstudy(English999)for1-3creditsandusethattimetorevisetheirportfoliopapersforthePreliminaryAExam(describedbelow).Thisfinalsemestercourseforportfoliorevisionsdoesnotcountastowardastudent’scourserequirements.SecondLanguageRequirementEvenifastudent'sprimaryresearchcanbeconductedinEnglish,allPhDcandidatesmusthaveproficiencyinalanguageotherthanEnglishthatwillallowforresearchonprimaryandsecondarysourcesrelatingtothechosentopic.Thespecificlanguageshouldbedecidedinconsultationwiththestudent'sadvisor.StudentswhosefirstlanguageisnotEnglishandwhoplantousetheirnativelanguageintheirresearchmustconsultwiththeiradvisoraboutusingittosatisfythelanguagerequirement.InordertosatisfythelanguagerequirementforthePhD,studentsintheInterdisciplinaryTheatreStudiesProgrammustEITHER

ItmaybepossibletosubstitutethestudyofAmericanSignLanguageoracomputerlanguagetosatisfythisrequirement.AstudentrequestingthissubstitutionshouldsubmitalettertotheProgramDirectorexplainingtheneedtodoso,andtheplanforachievingcomputerlanguageorAmericanSignLanguagecompetency.Whilethestudyofmusicnotationordancenotationmaybenecessaryforsomestudents'researchandtheacquisitionofthoseskillswouldbeexpected,theywillnotcounttowardsatisfyingtheforeignlanguagerequirement.

PracticumRequirementsPhDstudentsarerequiredtotakethreepracticumcourses.Apracticumcourseisdefinedasacoursethatincorporatespracticeintoitscurriculum.RecommendedcoursesforthefulfillmentofthisrequirementincludeDramainEducation,AppliedTheatreorDramaturgy.Inlieuofoneoftheirthreerequiredpracticumcourses,studentscaninsteadparticipateinthreeapprovedproductionactivitiesasdramaturgs,assistantdirectors,performers,designersortechnicians.TheseproductionactivitiesmaybewithUW’sUniversityTheatreorwithanothergroup.ProductionactivitiesoutsideofUniversityTheatremustbeapprovedaheadoftimebythestudent’sadvisorandtheProgramDirector.ComprehensiveExamsAfterthefinalsemesterofcoursework,andafterfulfillingthelanguageandpracticumrequirements,allPhDstudentsneedtopassthecomprehensivePrelimAExamtobeadvancedtoDissertatorstatus.Aportfolioofthreeresearchpapers(discussedatlengthbelow)mustbesubmittedtotheGraduateCoordinatorfordistributiontoexamjurorsatleasttwoweekspriortotheexam,whichinvolvesanoraldefenseofapproximately90-120minutes.ThePrelimBExamisa1-houroraldefenseofthedissertationproposalconductedbythecandidate'sdissertationcommittee.ThisexamistypicallytakenonesemesterafterpassingthePrelimAexam,andmustbetakenbeforetheendofthesecondsemesterafterthePrelimA.TheDissertationTheculminatingprojectofthePhDdegree,thedissertationisanoriginalandsubstantialcontributiontoknowledgethatestablishesthestudentasascholarandprofessionalinthefieldoftheatrestudies.ThePhDdegreeisawardedafterasuccessful2-hourdefenseofthethesisbeforethecandidate’sthesiscommittee.PhDwithSpecializationinTheatreforYouthQualifiedstudentsmaypursueaPhDdegreeinTheatreforYouth.InadditiontodevelopingspecialinterestsinK-12InterdisciplinaryTheatreStudieseducationandproduction,studentsareexpectedtodevelopathoroughbackgroundintraditionaltheatre(i.e.worlddrama,history,criticism,andproduction)andareencouragedtotakerelevantcoursesinotherdepartmentssuchasCurriculumandInstruction,Sociology,Psychology,andEnglish.PhDstudentsinTheatreforYouthareadvisedbytheDirectoroftheTheatreforYouthProgram,andtaketheTFYcoursesofferedbythedepartmentinthecourseoftheirstudies.TheywillgeartheirdissertationtoanyaspectofthefieldofTheatreforYouthinconsultationwiththeiradvisor.Inaddition,atleastoneoftheirthreePrelimApapersshoulddiscussanaspectoftheatreanddramaforyouth.Whenfundingallows,doctoralstudentswhospecializeinTheatreforYoutharegivenpriorityforteachingassistantshipsforT&D/C&I/Slavic362,DramainEducation.

revisionstrategies.Theadvisormayalsoprovidegeneralguidanceontheselectionofpapersatthebeginningoftherevisionprocess.However,ITSfacultydonotreadorcommentonpaperswhiletheyarebeingrevisedforinclusionintheportfolio,andtheresponsibilityforcreatinganddevelopingthefinalportfoliorestswiththestudent.Portfoliopapersshouldbedistinguishedcarefullyfromtermpaperssubmittedasfinalprojectsingraduate-levelcourses.Whileafinalpapermaybesatisfactoryandevenevaluatedasexcellentinthecontextofaspecificclass,thestudentmustplanthechangesthatwilldevelopitintoanacceptableportfoliopaper.Revisions,therefore,areconductedoutsidetheregularcourseofadvising,andbecomethesoleresponsibilityofthestudent.Portfoliopapersdonotneedtoidentifytheoriginalcoursesforwhichtheywerewritten.PhDstudentsintheTheatreforYouthprogramshouldsubmitatleastoneportfoliopaper(history,theory,ordramaticcriticism)dealingwithanaspectofTheatreforYouth,ideallyonewrittenforaclassinTFY(500-levelorabove).Intheirfinalsemesterofcoursework,studentsmayenrollinENGL999(DirectedStudy)for1-3credits,andusethattimeforrevisingtheportfoliopapers;theyarealsoencouragedtotakeadvantageofstudycircles,supportgroups,theUniversityWritingCenter,andotherresourcesoncampus).PortfoliopaperscannotbewrittenduringthesemesterofthePrelimAExam.StudentswhowriteaportfoliopaperintheirlastsemesterofcourseworkshouldscheduletheirPrelimAduringWelcomeWeekoftheFallorSpringsemesters(AugustorJanuary).Theleadadvisoristheadministrativefacultyofrecordforthecourse,butstudentscompleterevisionsontheirown.Revisionsmayinclude,butarenotlimitedto,expandinguponthetopic,respondingtofacultycommentsreceivedduringtheclassforwhichthepaperwaswritten,deepeningtheresearchbyconsultingadditionalsources,andrefiningthemethodology.Astudentmayaddsubstantiallytoanearlier,shorterpaper(onewhichislessthan6000words)inordertosubmititasaportfoliopaper.AnexemplaryPrelimApaperisonethatispotentiallypublishableinascholarlytheatrejournal.DescriptionsofPortfolioPapersTheatreHistoryportfoliopapersanalyzeperformanceelements,events,texts,trends,andtraditionsinthecontextoftheirown,particularhistoricalmoments.Theyareinformedinterpretationsofthetheatricalpastthatfocusonperformances,productions,andtheinstitutionsfromwhichtheyemerged.Manymethodsareacceptable,fromempiricalstudiestorevisionistreadings.Papersmightfocusonsuchsubjectsasindividualsorgroupsinvolvedintheperformance(actors,directors,designers,producers,audiences);techniquesofdirecting,acting,ordesign;theeconomicsoftheatreproduction;performancehistories;orgovernmentregulations.Theymighttakeonsuchmattersastheculturalorideologicaltraditionsonwhichaperformancewasbuilt,thematerialconditionsoftheperformanceevent,thesocio-politicalcontextsoftheperformance,ortheimplicationsforfuturetheatricalpracticeofperformanceduringaparticularhistoricalperiod.Atheatrehistorypaperdoesnotalwaysrequirethewritertoperformoriginalarchivalwork,butitmustbeinformedbyhistoricaldocumentation,demonstratingathoroughunderstandingofthehistoricalcontextsofthesubject.

introducesandcontextualizestheproposal,followedbycommentsandquestionsfromthecommittee.Thepurposeistoassistthecandidateindefiningandrefininghisorherdissertationproject.Thecommitteemayhelpthecandidateidentifyrelevanttextualandcontextualmaterialsforthestudy,askforclarificationsofmethodologyandconceptualframework,anddiscussthescopeandbreadthofthestudy.ThedissertationproposalmaybeapprovedatthePrelimBExamwithnorevisions,orwithsuggestionsforrevisionthatareprovidedtothecandidateinwriting.Itmayalsoberejectedinitsexistingform,withrecommendationsforsubstantialrevision.Iftheproposalisacceptedwithnorevisions,itwillbeaddedtothestudent'sfileandthePhDchecklistwillbesigned.Iftheproposalisacceptedwithrevisions,therevisionsshouldbecompletedwithinthreemonthsofthePrelimBExam,andshouldbereviewedeitherbytheDissertationAdvisororbythefullcommitteebeforetheproposalisfiledandrecordedandthechecklistissigned.Iftheproposalisrejected,anewPrelimBwillbescheduledwithinaperiodoftimetobedecidedbythecommittee.PrelimBexamscannotbetakenmorethantwice.OncetheDissertatorhaspassedthePrelimB,heorshebeginswritingthedissertationundertheguidanceoftheDissertationAdvisorandwithvaryingdegreesofinputfromtheentirecommittee.Thedissertationcommittee'sendorsementoftheproposalindicatesthecommitteemembers'willingnesstoworkwiththedissertatoronthatproject.Althoughtheprojectislikelytochangeintheprocessofresearchandwriting,itshouldbearaclear,recognizablerelationshiptotheacceptedproposal.Ifthecommitteechanges,newmembersshouldreceiveanacceptedproposalandmustagreeinwritingthattheyarewillingtoworkwiththeDissertatoronthedissertation.Ifthedissertationchangestotheextentthatithasnorecognizableconnectiontotheacceptedproposal,anewproposalmustbesubmittedtothedissertationcommittee,andmayresultinasecondPrelimBdefense.

DissertationCompletionGuidelinesTheDissertationDefenseThedissertationdefensemustbescheduledduringorbeforeFinalsWeekofasemesterinwhichthestudentisenrolledasaDissertator.DissertatorsshouldnotifytheProgramDirectorandtheGraduateCoordinatoroftheirintentiontodefendatleastonemonthinadvancesothatthenecessarypaperworkcanbeprepared.Studentsmustsubmittheirdissertationtocommitteemembersatleastthreeweeksbeforethedefensedate.Thestudentisresponsibleforprovidingahardcopyofthedissertationtoanycommitteememberwhorequestsit.Thedefenseusuallylastsabouttwohours.Itassessesthedissertationwithregardtoitscompleteness,coherence,andcontributiontothefield.Thedissertationmaybeacceptedwithoutrevisions,acceptedwithminorrevisions,acceptedwithmajorrevisions,orrejectedaltogether.Mostdissertationsareacceptedwitheitherminorormajorrevisions.Ifcommitteemembersrecommendthatthedissertationcanbedepositedwithminorornosubstantialrevisions,theywillsignthe"PhDWarrant"andthe"CommitteePage"form.Revisionshavetobecompletedbeforethedissertationcanbedeposited.Intherareinstancethatadissertationisrejected,anewdefensewillneedtobescheduledwithinatimeperiodstipulatedbythecommittee.
