New this spring! Become a Friend of the Field Station!

UW-Waukesha has a Field Station? Some would say that the UW-Waukesha Field Station is Waukesha County’s best keep secret! Both the Ice Age Trail and the Glacial Drumlin Bike Trail pass through the property, which is nestled between Wales and Dousman. The Field Station shares a home with the Wildlife in Need Center (WINC) and offers an un-paralleled array of learning opportunities in a beauti-ful, natural setting.

For over forty years, emeritus Marlin Johnson and the Friends of the Field Station have been committed to converting 98 acres of old farmland into an outdoor classroom composed of natural and restored eco-systems native to Wisconsin. Hundreds of trees and thousands of prairie seeds have been planted on site to create a diverse sample of Wisconsin’s forests and grasslands. Aquatic habitats – including a small lake, a spring-fed stream, and a temporary pond – add to the mix. Other amenities include an indoor classroom, a wood-fired kiln for ceramics classes, and an historical farmstead.

A little history...The land comprising the Field Station was originally donated to UW-Waukesha in 1967 by Miss Gertrude Sherman, who intended that the property be main-tained in a natural condition for years to come. After 125 years of farming, the land was finally retired from agricultural use. UW-Waukesha has since restored acreage to communities of plants and animals native to Wisconsin.

Hope for the future...It is our hope that hands-on learning experiences with plants, animals, soils and water and the ecological processes that bind them together can lead to greater understanding of the natural world and our role as caretakers. UW-Waukesha Continuing Education invites individuals, organizations, youth groups, and schools to contact us for more learning opportunities that are available year-round.

For each individual that registers for a UW-Waukesha “Friends of the Field Station” class, UW-Waukesha Continuing Education will donate a portion of the registration fees to the Field Station Foundation Fund. Donated monies will be used for equipment and staff-ing to control invasive species and for planting wild-flowers in the ecological communities, and also for general maintenance of buildings and grounds. Please contact UW-Waukesha Continuing Education for your tax donation receipt.

What is a Friend of the Field Station? We invite you to take a “Friends of the Field Station” class and see why we think the Field Station is spe-cial! There are selection of courses for both youth and adults identified as “Friends of the Field Station” classes.

How can I become a Friend of the Field Station? It’s easy! Choose one option from the below list and you will be automatically added to our Friend list!

Introduction to Buddhism* Instructor, Michael Mullooly, MA Buddhism is a major spiritual force in the world today. From its roots in Asia twenty-five centuries ago, Buddhism has become one of the fastest growing religions in Europe and North America. Its compel-ling insights into human existence offer an ancient yet very relevant alternative to the materialism of the modern age. The objective of this course is to investigate the origins and historical development of Buddhism as well as its current trends. The course will explore Buddhism’s central, unifying principles as well as its diverse forms, from the esoteric rituals of Tantric Buddhism to the minimalist refinement of Zen. The course will also delve into Buddhism’s most important sacred writings, as well as the sacred art inspired by the Buddha and his teachings. *Can be taken as part of the Buddhist Certificate Class meets every Wednesday, Feb 25 - Apr 1, 6:30pm-8:30pm, $109 Save! Register before 2/11 for only $99!

Buddhist Iconography* Instructor, Michael Mullooly, MA Buddhism is the single common thread uniting the Asian world, from India to Southeast Asia, and along the Silk Road from China to Japan. To guide and in-spire believers, a rich panoply of symbols and images were made beginning in India in the third century BCE. Buddhist Iconography is the study of these symbols and images. This class investigates how the Buddha image transformed through time and place, and explores how Buddhist art was shaped by funda-mental changes within the faith. Through our study of paintings, statuary, temple architecture and Japanese Zen gardens, we hope to gain an appreciation for the beautiful and diverse world of Buddhist art. *Can be taken as part of the Buddhist CertificateClass meets every Wednesday, Apr 15 - May 20, 6:30pm-8:30pm, $109 Save!
