FELICIA ANNIN
Department: ENGLISH
Supervisor: PROF F MOOLLA
Thesis:
Eros and politics: Love and its discontents in the fi ctions of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o
Description:
In her dissertation, Felicia Annin has studied a canonical African literature author from a
virtually completely unconsidered perspective. Drawing on her observation that there is a
romantic plot or subplot in almost all Ngũgĩ ’s work, Felicia has analysed the importance of
romantic love in the author’s political vision. Some of the themes the dissertation explores
include the potential of romantic love to break the boundaries of class, religion and culture,
the signifi cance of love in marriage, and the social ills that ensue betrayals of love. She fi nds
that love cannot triumph until the narrative is able to negotiate a symbiotic relationship
between eros and Ngugi’s vision of social justice.

Thesis:
Frameworks of representation: A design history of the District Six Museum in Cape Town
Description:
In an area as over-researched as the District Six Museum it is diffi cult to fi nd work that is
original. Hayes-Roberts’s thesis is precisely this. Her approach is to write a ‘design history’
of the museum. She uses her intimate knowledge of the museum to craft an empirically rich
thesis. Via a close reading of material at the museum she shows how diff erent archival
collection methodologies are employed, the ways the museum’s buildings are designed, its
exhibitions constructed, and ongoing contestations over meanings of urban space in relation
to city planning and the marketing of Cape Town as World Design Capital in 2014. There are
many remarkable design stories she uncovers, but perhaps none more so than the tops-
turvy apartheid doll that has found its way into the museum’s collection.

Thesis:
A study of the socio-economic integration of highly skilled Nigerian migrants in Cape Town
Description:
Gordon Igbokwe conducted his doctoral research in Cape Town, where he examined the
socio-economic integration of highly-skilled Nigerian migrants. Empirical data was collected
through a multiple-case study organizations that have employed high-skilled migrants.
Using innovative and thematic analysis, the research identifi ed the critical domains for the
integration of this group of migrants. The dissertation advocates for policy development that
recognizes highly-skilled migrants to the top National research agenda.
DESMOND JOHAN LAMBRECHTS
Department: RELIGION AND THEOLOGY
Supervisor: DR M PILLAY
Co-supervisor: PROF E CONRADIE
Thesis:
The implementation of the Isiseko Sekomoleza HIV/AIDS programme in the Diocese of
False Bay: A Critical Theological Investigation
Description:
HIV and Aids continues to carry considerable stigma. This is often exacerbated by Christian
views on human sexuality and gendered power-relations. The Diocese of False Bay was
therefore bold to declare through its Isiseko Sokomoleza HIV/AIDS Programme that “Our
church has AIDS”. However, the implementation of the programme had a limited impact on
reducing such stigma. In this study Desmond Lambrechts seeks to establish why this is the
case. Is the problem reliance on external funding? Or inadequate organisational structures?
Or faulty notions of pastoral care? He conducted interviews with church practitioners and
analysed data using a Primary Healthcare model. He concludes that HIV/AIDS has led the
Church to revisit its core mandate, mission, and witness through love and compassion.

Thesis:
Dead Aid: A critical view of aid to Africa from an ethical perspective
Description:
This study is a critical analysis of the provision of AID to developing countries. The
researcher takes four countries including Botswana, Lesotho, Libya and Ghana as case
studies to evaluate the eff ects of AID. In using these four countries as case studies the
researcher gains critical perspectives of both proponents of AID and opponents of AID.
The researcher uses a utilitarian ethical perspective to draw conclusions whether AID
causes sustainable development.

Supervisor: PROF L WITZ
Thesis:
Culture, history and politics in Malawi: The production of national heritage, 1964-2009
Description:
Lusaka’s thesis makes an important contribution to heritage studies, providing a valuable
case study of an under-researched area of the construction of heritage in Africa through the
Malawian case study. From the unique position of being an employee of Museums of Malawi
he displays an in-depth knowledge and a critical account of contemporary heritage politics
in Malawi and the ways it is articulated. His most important argument is around the continuity
of colonial heritage in post-colonial Malawi. This is articulated through ethnic associations
which have become the basis of claims to intangible heritage. It is also evident in the
continued glorifi cation of David Livingstone, which Lusaka presents as the outcome of
heritage diplomacy between Malawi and Scotland.

Digital storytelling and the production of the personal in Lwandle Cape Town
Description:
Utilising the framework of a precarious, liminal eco-system Sykes presents a critically
engaged account of a series of digital story-telling workshops that she facilitated in Lwandle,
40 kilometres outside Cape Town city centre. It is a beautifully crafted, nuanced,
transdisciplinary work that challenges methodological conventions of history. The thesis
connects scholarship on digital story-telling with the reality of the everyday, showing linkages
between the micro and macro, the mundane and non-human, and spaces, techniques and
practices. There is unusual rigour and creativity around the critical engagement with images,
which can serve as an opening for other scholars. The thesis is notable for showing what
thoughtful ethical research means in practice, beyond bureaucratic requirements.
