BEYOND THE REALM OF FUN

Halloween pranks got out of hand over the week-end. The above photo shows the fire department just after it had extinguished a tree fire on Second street Sunday night. Someone poured fuel oil on the tree and lit it. Prior to that, someone set off a charge of dynamite near the corner oi Spring and Mill streets. Saturday night someone lighted two piles of leaves in front and behind an auto on Second street. The fire department may press an arson charge to prove that we have some boys in town who are too big to be playing with matches.

Thoughts from Outer Space

By Marshall Saylei I mentioned sin a while ago

and later discovered Iwaia't through kicking it around.

The only t ime Michigan was entirely free of tin was when there were so people arouad, long before the first whoop.

Tea, Sin cannot be csmitted without some person having a band In it, which Is an ornery fact and a blight upon you and I.

Ornery, too, is the fact that no great good can be done with out some small evil scratching around outside trying to louse up the works, Get rid of the potato bug and a drouth sets in; work thirty years to become a Bob Hope and a Skelton raises its red head.

But I can't do a thing about it . It would take a whole pas-sel of parsons working overtime to straighten the confounded thing out.

There, now I think Vm done with sin.

Samuel Ramsey, age 63, at his home October 19 th.

died

Thomas St. Charles, while working in Strehl's Garage, had a rusty scale of steel imbed itself in the left eyeball. He went to Traverse City for treatment but it was impossible to save, either the sight or the eyeball.

Are you paying more than 111* a gallon for your residential heating oil?

If you are, you're paying too much to heat your home.

If you are now using natural Gas (or plan to) for cooking, water heating, clothes drying or Gaslights, and your use is equal to that of our average residential customer, you can get your Gas for heating under our special service rate at a cost equivalent to fuel oil priced at just 11½^ a gallon. And the nice thing about our Gas rates is that

the more you use, the less it costs per unit. That's a bargain in anybody's book.

(Can't pay for the cost of conversion right now? Here's good news: Whether you convert your present furnace, or even install a new Gas furnace, Michigan Consolidated will pay for it and its installation by a qualified heating contractor. And it won't

cost you a penny until July 1, 1966!) So why not make your present oil furnace

more economical this winter? Have it converted to economical natural Gas. Then you can start putting your money in the bank for a change. Instead of in your furnace. For full details, call us or your heating contractor today.

An impromptu "farewell" party surprised Lysle Johnston and Wesley Gilpin Thursday in their teachers ' agency and insurance office located in the city building. When the city decided it might need the rear offices for city business, the men prepared to move out. Johnston has rented the rooms for more than fifteen years and now says he will operate his insurance business from his home. A cake, made by Mrs . Charles Landers, was served along with coffee as a few friends dropped in to bid the men "farewell". The little party was arranged by Charles Landers and those dropping in included Greg Boswell, Max Damoth, Bruce Malpass, Marshall Sayles, Joe Hammond, Ben Bustard and Jim Cook.

The East Jordan Junior High School was sucessful in the contest held last year by the Educational ABC's of Industry. The following won prizes: Betty Lou McWatters and Linda Hammond won a prize of $1.00 in the Handwriting division.

The purpose of the program is to afford an opportunity for students to gain an insight into the way in which different industries operate, some of the industry stories included are: bread making, rubber, grain, ariculture, salt processing, oil and gasoline, etc. One manufacturer from

each particular product-classification, sponsors the story of their product and company. Career stories are also carried. The program fits principally into the social studies areas although handwriting plays an • important part. Projects are organized on the industries and are done by the students. The best work is sent in as possible prize winners.

The Educational ABC's of Industry is designed completely for

use in school and is available only to teachers. A teacher orders a free book for each pupil in the class. Those industries sponsoring pages make the program possible.

A great deal of enjoyment and a real opportunity "to learn by doing" is possible for those students who participate. Thousands of entries are sent in from every state.

Last year 18 million pounds of clothing were donated during last year's campaign. The clothing brought help and hope, without regard to race, religion or color, to the poor in 60 countries of Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America.

About one third of the items collected during November will be earmarked for shipment to South Vietnam. Over 400 tons of clothing, footwear and bedding materials already have been distributed by CRS, the overseas aid agency, to suffering refugees, widows, orphans and other war victims in South Vietnam.
