It was disappointing to see the 2nds exit the Warwickshire 2nd XV Cup when they lost their semi-final by just 21-26 to Broadstreet, a very close result against one of the county’s strongest clubs. The final resulted in a 26-16 win for Sutton Coldfield over Broadstreet The 2nds also had to concede the championship of Warwickshire League One to Broadstreet, losing out by just three points. As James Melvin points out in his match report, had his team not gone down, surprisingly, by just two points to Earlsdon before Christmas they would now be champions. Congratulations to James and his team on another fine league season. They do still have an excellent chance of bringing some silverware to the club, however, as today they are at Lutterworth contesting the semi-final of the Rugby & District Clonmell Cup. They will be up for this one having lost to Lutterworth in two of the last three finals of this competition. The 1st XV are still involved in the Warwickshire Cup, and face very tough opposition in the semi-final in the shape of Sutton Coldfield, who are the current holders of the cup and comfortably disposed of Broadstreet in their quarter-final match. It has now been agreed that the semi-final will be played on Wednesday 30th March, at a neutral venue. A venue under consideration id Old Coventrians RFC, although we await final confirmation of this. Watch the website for details. Later in this programme you will see a feature about the clamp down by referees on dissent and ‘back chat’. Today’s Visitors Camp Hill RFC

Camp Hill RFC has a long and proud history, tracing its roots back to 1893 when it was founded as Camp Hill Old Edwardians RFC. The school from which it grew, King Edward VI Camp Hill Grammar School, had itself been established just ten years earlier, in 1883. The new club’s first game was played on 14th October, 1893, against Aston Old Edwardians, the old boys of King Edward VI School, Aston, at Showell Green Lane,

Sparkhill. They won the game by 13-0 with the first try being scored by 17 year old E H ‘Teddy’ Parker, who was to play a major role in the club for many years thereafter. Having moved from Sparkhill, Teddy Parker was elected captain of the club for its first season at a ground in Wake Green and went on to record a remarkable seventeen seasons in that role, his last being in 1919/20. In the 1920s the search started for a new ground in order to give the club long term security and it was Teddy Parker who viewed dozens of fields before settling on a site in Haslucks Green Road, Shirley, which was purchased for £1,138 freehold and has been the club’s home ever since, the first game being played there in October 1928. Teddy Parker, who died in 1948, is seen as the single most important figure in the club’s history and an annual game is played for the Teddy Parker Cup against Aston Old Edwardians, the club’s opponents in their first ever game. The club went ‘open’ in 1971 and soon afterwards it formally changed its name, dropping the ‘Old Edwardians’ tag to become simply Camp Hill RFC. In the seasons following the introduction of leagues in 1987, the club made rapid progress to Midlands Division One (now National 3 Midlands) and stayed there for ten seasons until the advent of semi-professionalism made it virtually impossible for a truly amateur club to maintain that status – a situation that OLs can sympathise with! In 2003 we beat Camp Hill to win promotion to the old Midlands One, lasting just one season at that level. Before this season, that game in Shirley was the last time that the two clubs met. Camp Hill are enjoying an excellent season, currently lying in 6th spot in the league, just 4 points behind 3rd placed Bournville and with a game in hand over them and the other clubs above them. So we can expect a tough test this afternoon!

1st XV Match Report Midlands One West – Saturday 12th March Banbury 20 - Old Laurentians 14 In setting out to reverse their recent run of poor results, OLs made the worst possible start to this game by conceding a try inside two minutes to a Banbury side looking for just their third league win of the season and seemingly heading for relegation. On this form OLs could well be joining them in the drop unless they can begin to find some of the drive that characterised their early season performances as this was a listless showing that hardly deserved the losing bonus point that resulted. Banbury were altogether more determined and seemed to want the win far more than their opponents. Injuries to key OL’s players at regular intervals through the season have taken their toll and their fortunes didn’t improve on this occasion as fly half Jon Bean suffered a broken bone in his foot that will rule him out for the rest of the campaign; and Saturday’s team was further affected by the non-availability of three of the most experienced players in OL’s squad. The early try for the home side had the look of a training exercise in which OLs had been told to offer only shadow opposition as the ball was routinely moved right then switched left for wing Andrew Mawle to claim the touchdown, fly half Mike Smith adding the goal points. For the remainder of the first quarter, OLs barely made it into the opposition half while Banbury had two tries disallowed after forward passes. Then on twenty five minutes OLs suddenly sparked into life and Simon Bayliss made good ground down the right before being held. The subsequent period of pressure was rewarded when scrum half Ricky Reed sniped over after OLs had won a lineout close to the Banbury line, Bean adding the conversion to level the score at 7-7. As half time approached OL’s defence again went missing after a poor clearance kick found Banbury’s left wing in space. The ball was moved cross field for right wing Chris Davies to run in at the corner without a tackle being made. The conversion was missed and the half time whistle sounded with Banbury 12-7 to the good. Early in the second half Banbury scored their third try directly from a scrum on their own ten metre line. The ball was moved quickly through the back line to Mawle on the left and the wing shrugged off an attempted tackle to coast over for his second try, the sort of score that has coaches tearing their hair out! With a lead of 17-7, Banbury were looking secure, more so after Smith kicked a penalty to increase the margin to 20-7 and the unfortunate Jon Bean was yellow carded. But this triggered a fight back from OL’s 14 men and at three successive lineouts in Banbury’s 22, OL’s forwards drove for the line but were held by stubborn defence and lost the ball each time. After yet another lineout the ball was released and John Carruthers, now at fly half, put in a well measured chip over the defence, the bouncing ball eluded the Banbury full back behind the line and Carruthers pounced for the try, converting it himself for 20-14. Needing a converted try to win, OLs failed to lift their game at a critical time and were lucky not to slip further behind after indiscipline gave Banbury’s Smith two penalty attempts at goal, the second bouncing back off a post. After a delay of more than twenty minutes for the injury to Jon Bean, not surprisingly the game lost its shape, OLs again reduced to fourteen men. The last twelve minutes yielded a succession of errors by both sides as the clock ticked down towards a well-deserved win for the home team.

Sundry Stuff News on the injury front Injuries continue to bedevil our season, the latest involving Jon Bean in only his second start for the 1st XV. Jon broke a bone in his foot in the game at Banbury last week and we send him best wishes for a speedy recovery. With the recent loss of Scott Wiles with a broken collar bone and Paul Willis with knee and hamstring injuries, our quest for vital league points during a tough run-in to the end of the season has been hampered further. Scott and Jon are obviously out of action for the rest of the season and it is difficult to be optimistic that we will see Paul on the pitch again this season. Carl Adams made a tentative attempt to start a comeback by going to his first training session last week but very soon realised that his injured ear was not going to stand up to action – and he needs to look his handsome best for his recently announced July wedding! (Personally, I thought his ears were beyond salvation anyway!) Some guidelines from Onley An item was spotted on the news page of the Warwickshire RFU website recently that had been submitted by Onley RFC (yes, that’s the jail!) for the guidance of visiting clubs (they don’t play away games!). After setting out requirements for early notification of visiting player names etc. etc., they went on to add the following useful advice…..You are not allowed to bring mobile phones, knives, guns, drugs and aerosols into the jail. …continued Saturday’s match was superb and four OL’s committee men were invited to join their members for an excellent lunch where the wine flowed freely. Banbury’s Chairman filled his opposite number’s glass at least four times – then after the next fill up politely informed him that he would be asked to stand up and say a few words after the Banbury President had said his piece! Timing is everything! So that’s why they built it! The introduction of Tim Chambers’ report on the 3rds game against Newbold recently:…. Although funded and constructed under the working title and misnomer ‘Western Relief Road’ the Laurentian/Newbold Highway saw its official opening on Saturday February 19th 2011 as it was used in earnest for the first time to serve its proper purpose as a tarmac conduit between Fenley Field and Parkfield Road as the Threes made the short journey to the Field by the Avon and perennial rivals Newbold. A funding opportunity! The identity of the mystery businessman planning to buy Rugby Lions was revealed for the first time last week, a former Lions player who has been resident in Canada for the last 25 years, Mike Aland. But it was also reported that the deal to buy the club was dependent on a large real estate deal in London coming to fruition. A bit like Sir Mark Palmer putting a monkey on a 15-1 shot at Cheltenham next week and offering to build us a new clubhouse if it comes home!

Warwickshire Rugby Football Union ZERO TOLERANCE ON BACK CHAT TO MATCH OFFICIALS

The Warwickshire RFU Discipline Committee are concerned by a worrying trend over recent months of an increase in “Back Chat” to the Referees from Players, Coaches and

Spectators.

Closer scrutiny of sending off reports has revealed a trend where failure to deal promptly with instances of “Back Chat” to the Match Officials during the game has eventually resulted in severe problems later in the game which then escalate out of control leading to Referees having to dismiss players or in severe cases even abandoning the game.

The Discipline Committee have discussed this trend with the Warwickshire Referees Society Executive who agree that action needs to be take now to curb this problem.

Law 10.4 (s) states, “All players must respect the authority of the referee. They must not dispute the referee’s decisions. They must stop playing at once when the referee blows the whistle except at a kick-off or at a penalty kick following admonishment, temporary suspension, or sending off.

Referees will therefore be asked to adopt a “Zero Tolerance” policy with effect from the weekend of 12th March 2011.

2nd XV Match Action Friendly

Daventry 2nd XV 12 - Old Laurentian 2nd XV 22

After a late cancellation by Kenilworth, who were only able to raise 6 players, OL's were able to get an away fixture at Daventry. Having won 41-0 in the Clonmell Cup last month, OL's should have been confident, but injuries and unavailabilities meant that they travelled with a somewhat makeshift bare fifteen.

The fifteen lasted all of three minutes as McCulloch suffered a recurrence of a knee injury leaving OL's to play with fourteen. They started slowly and Daventry looked up for revenge as they threw themselves into the rucks and it was they who struck first blood. An average kick was followed by weak tackling as the big number 8 ran the ball back 40 metres before passing to his centre who crashed over for an unconverted try.

This sparked OLs into life. Although they lacked fluency, with players out of position, they started to graft hard. A period in Daventry's 22 saw good hands as Orr and Roderick interchanged before Loydall dived over for a well taken score. The conversion was missed.

After all the hard work, OLs let themselves down. After conceding a soft free kick for foot up in the scrum, they failed to react to the kick over the top, allowing Daventry to score a converted try and go into half-time 12-5 up.

The team showed more resolve in the second half, playing a controlled game. Orr kicked sensibly for territory and the pack went for a classic mauling game, shunting the Daventry forwards back from every attacking line out.

It was from this situation that Rich Foxon was to crash over for 2 tries, steering the maul over the line. Both scores were well converted by Orr, to put OL's into a 19-12 lead.

As OL’s fitness started to tell, further pressure led to three penalty attempts, one of which Orr converted. OL's were happy to hear the final whistle and come away with a 22-12 win having played 77 minutes with only 14 men.

Following Barkers Butts cancellation of the last league fixture and the consequent award of a 20-0 victory to Broadstreet, the 2nd team have finished their Warwickshire 1 league campaign in second place, three points behind Broadstreet. Despite having the most points for and fewest against, a poor result before Christmas at Earlsdon cost them the title. Our congratulations are offered to Broadstreet.

This Saturday sees a tougher fixture at Lutterworth in the semi-final of the Clonmell Cup. OL's will seek to extract some revenge, having lost in two finals to Lutterworth in the last three years, with a number of players available again.

The Midlands One Scene Dudley Kingswinford are now assured of at least 2nd place this season as only Sutton Coldfield can now overhaul them and with DK in their current form, that seems unlikely; and the leaders have a massively superior points difference over Sutton. The latter would have come off the pitch after piling up 107 points against Banbury feeling they had seriously dented DK’s points advantage, only to be somewhat deflated when heard of DK’s points haul the same day against OLs! The pair of them meet in a title decider next week, DK having home advantage. The top two appear to be the only win bankers, week in, week out, as form fluctuates quite widely in the chasing pack. No-one expected Worcester Wanderers to come away from Bournville with a win last week, but they did! And our visitors today, Camp Hill, went down at home to Old Halesonians, who, with Lichfield, are putting together some consistently good results. Both leapfrogged Camp Hill in the table, Lichfield now showing up as one of the form teams in the league as their home record begins to match their excellent results away from base. Old Hales and Lichfield meet today and it’s a bold man who attempts to predict the result. We continue to look anxiously over our shoulders at Worcester and Nuneaton Old Eds. The Wanderers have a chance to widen the gap over Old Eds today when they entertain Banbury; whilst Old Eds have a formidable task against DK. The pair of them meet next week in a crucial game for both.

The Local Scene Rugby Lions have now announced the identity of their potential buyer, but it looks increasingly as if he is acquiring a club who will be back down in the regional league structure next season. After losing at home against Harrogate last week they stay second bottom of National 2 North, now 12 points adrift of Morley above them having played two games more. There is little consolation looming for them as today and next Saturday they play two of the league’s top four, Leicester Lions and Loughborough Students. The following week, Lions host Nuneaton at Webb Ellis Road and if Nuns secure the win points that could well settle Lions fate for the season. In National 3 Midlands, Kenilworth are now in serious trouble, losing to fellow strugglers Burton last week. Meanwhile bottom placed Hereford pulled off a shock by disposing of Old Northamptonians and are now just a point behind Kenilworth having played three games less. So Kenilworth are now more likely to be meeting OLs than Rugby Lions next season! In the same league Broadstreet are now comfortable in mid table after posting two successive wins, but it’s very tight at the top where Bromsgrove are holding on to a narrow lead over South Leicester and Longton. Congratulations to Newbold who ground out a narrow victory over Long Buckby two weeks ago to reach the Midlands final of the Senior Vase. They must have been expecting to meet Upton on Severn, the leaders of their league, Midlands 3 West (South), in the final, but Upton suffered a surprise home defeat in their semi against Ashbourne.

Bold will play Ashbourne in the final at Parkfield Road on April 2nd.

In the Junior Vase final our old adversaries (and one time source of many points) Edwardians will play Harborne. And to complete the picture, Stoke on Trent will face Market Rasen & Louth in the final of the Midlands Intermediate Cup. Newbold now look increasingly secure in 2nd place in Midlands 3 West (South) after beating Kings Norton last week and now have an eight point advantage over Shipston on Stour having played one game less. Bold have put together a good young side and are enjoying a fine season that could see them bounce straight back to Midlands 2. In that league, Dunlop look increasingly like achieving a second successive promotion. With four games to go they have an eight point advantage over Barkers Butts, who are fighting for the play off place with Bedworth and Spartans, the rest being well adrift. In Midlands 3 East (South) it has come down to a three way fight for honours between Rugby St Andrews, Long Buckby and Oadby Wyggestonians as no other club can now catch any of them. Currently Oadby Wyggs have top spot, two points ahead of Saints with Buckby a further five points behind in third but having played two games less than their rivals. Saints meet Oadby Wyggs in the final game of the season for both on April 16th, whilst Buckby finish their season a week later against Old Newtonians, who are currently bottom of the league. This one’s going right down to the wire!

If vengeance is a meal best served cold, this match was a King Prawn Vindaloo straight from the hob, served on a hot plate with a side order of chilli.

From the off with Sir Mark Palmer MBE pulling the strings at 10, the OLs started at a ferocious pace and were threatening the Newbold line within seconds of the kick off.

Bold managed to clear their lines but it wasn’t long before OLs were threatening again. A Newbold infringement saw the referee signal penalty advantage to the home side but Sir Mark, perhaps unwilling to go through the rigmarole of a place kick or perhaps impatient to get on the score sheet, dropped a goal to open the account.

As with the previous week, the set piece was at parity and, as with last week, the game was tight. Newbold reverted to type and kept it tight in the forwards whilst OLs tried to get the ball wide – both sides enjoyed a modicum of success with their respective methods and OLs were guilty of squandering a possible try scoring opportunity when Chambers spilled the ball in the tackle close to the Newbold try line.

Two Newbold penalties saw them in front at half time.

The second half started with two players making their OLs debut. Chris Mills at 6 and Sam Howells at loose head prop were both impressive from the off with some bone shuddering tackling from the former and some powerful scrummaging from the latter. Both added some dynamism in the loose and around the fringes.

The game ebbed and flowed with both sides going at it hammer and tongs. One OLs incursion into Newbold territory saw a ball dropped and scooped up by Gasman, the Newbold Flyer. Overdrive was engaged and a 65 yard dash ended with a try between the posts converted to 7 points.

The game ended a well contested double header in which our near neighbours came out on top in both games. The margin in both was small enough to leave the thirds salivating at the prospect of the next one . . .
