Good morning, and welcome to Walton Lanefor today’s festive Sussex County FootballLeague Division Two fixture against Clymping. We extend a warm welcome to our visitorsplayers, officials and supporters who havemade the journey along the coast for today’sgame, in addition to match referee, AnthonyO’Brien from Lancing - and hope they allenjoy their short stay here at Walton Lane.We hope you all had an enjoyable andrelaxing Christmas. While the professional game is synonymouswith a busy schedule at this time of year,Andy’s first team haven’t kicked a ball for 16days – a Sussex Intermediate cup victory atWorthing Leisure their last outing – while ourlast Division 2 action was on November 28 – a2-1 defeat at Ferring. And you have to go back to October 17 forour last senior home game – a one-nil victoryagainst AFC Roffey, following a bizarre andextremely unfortunate run of threeconsecutive walk-overs – two in cupcompetitions - with opponents unable to fieldsides. So suffice to say, we have good reason to behappy about being back at home – and notjust because it’s Christmas! You may remember the corresponding fixturelast season – the first home game of 2014/15– also marked the re-opening our refurbishedclubhouse courtesy of Sport England funding. And with 2015 about to draw to a close, we’dlike to think we’ve continued to progress on-and-off the pitch in the last 12 months.Lifting the Division 3 Challenge Cup in April - agreat team performance at Pagham againstour local rivals, Sidlesham – was certainly a
highlight, with the first team well placed onthree fronts going into the second half of thisseason – not least the Intermediate Cup witha quarter-final trip to Lewes u21’s awaiting onJanuary 9.The reserves underwent big change in thesummer with Frank Antony moving to HaylingUnited, however new boss Danny Mullen hasdeveloped a squad who are improving week-after-week and continue to play a vital role inconnecting the senior and youth. On that note, bringing on a second youthteam - at under 15 level - was another bigstepping stone, as we continue to giveopportunity for local youngsters to play andenjoy structured and organised football withinthe village, and hopefully develop the nextgeneration of players at the club. The additional youth side has also openeddoors to new funding streams, with newtraining equipment being purchased thanks toUK Power Networks sports grants, anddevelopment grants via Sussex FA. Our FACharter Standard status has also provided theyouth sides access to new kits andopportunities for us to fund coaching courses. We’ve put in for more grant assistance tokeep improving the club into 2016, and willlearn in January if we have been successful, sowatch this space! Our Christmas Raffle was held in theclubhouse after the reserve game againstPagham on Saturday – raising interest withsome fantastic prizes put up by our sponsorsincluding Pompey tickets, meals out, massages, and the obligatory roster ofChristmas hampers, spirits, beer and wine! This was followed by a children’s party on theSunday. Our thanks to all who supportedthese events, and special thanks to Paul‘Banger’ Spencer - our loyal bar-keep - for hishelp in arranging.Remember the clubhouse bar and kitchen isopen serving hot and food/ drink - includingmulled wine to keep the Christmas spiritgoing!Enjoy the game and wishing you all a Happyand Prosperous New Year.
SCFA Intermediate Cup – 4th Round
By Dick BryantSecond half goals from Nick Edgington andJake Lafferty saw Bosham reach thequarter finals of the Sussex IntermediateCup at the expense of Brighton PremierLeague outfit, Worthing Leisure.Conditions at the Worthing Leisure Centrewere never going to help produce goodfootball and to their credit, both teamstried to defy the odds. The earlyexchanges often resulted in the ball sailingout of play, and it proved difficult foreither side to control the game.Playing with the wind, Bosham did have agood percentage of the early play, yet twoearly free kicks simply sailed over theWorthing bar. The first chance really fell toRicky Neenan of Worthing yet his nearpost shot was easily dealt with by KieranMagee in the Bosham goal. And it was the same striker who couldn’tlatch onto a good strike across the goalarea on 20 mins, which really saw the endof real clear cut chances for the homeside.Worthing did have a real purple patch fora good ten minutes, but with the groundcutting up badly, the final ball was oftenmissing. On the half-hour, an in swinging corneraided and abetted by the wind, eluded theWorthing keeper and hit the underside ofthe bar - and despite somewhat of afollowing melee - the ball was cleared. There were a few sorties by both teamstowards the end of the first half but theonly real winner in the first period, wasthe weather and the pitch.
The second half started brightly forBosham and the tactics deployed began towork. Clever work by the Boshammidfielders - skilfully marshalledthroughout by captain James Wilson -ended with the ball at Nick Edgington’sfeet. The tall striker proved his worth as aplayer for all seasons, coolly controllingthe ball and beating the advancing keeperto shoot from a wide angle into the emptynet. This signalled much of the play fromthere on as Bosham kept playingcontrolled football which was missing inthe first half.Edgington was then involved as Boshamdoubled their advantage only a fewminutes later. This time evading a tackleand crossing from the same acute anglefor a well finished header from the everindustrious Jake Lafferty. Another chancesoon presented itself for the visitors toadd a third, but this time the Worthingdefence held firm. Two down so early in the second halfmeant that Worthing needed to attack -and this they did.The hosts played some good football butwere proving vulnerable to the counterattack. Graeme Dowden was now enjoyingthe freedom on the left side where therewas evidence of grass, yet his efforts cameto nothing.Once again the diminutive figure ofWorthing’s Ricky Neenan continued tolook dangerous, yet the commandingfigures of Callum Fewell and BenBlanchard held firm and used the width toset up more sorties into the Worthing half.Andy Probee and Matt Docherty madeseveral timely interceptions late on, andLouis Bell kept up the work rate whichmakes him such a vital cog in the Boshamwheel. The win sets up another tricky-lookingaway tie in the last eight against Lewesu21’s, on January 9.
