HARVEST FESTIVAL. CHILDSWICKHAM.
After a thorough recruitment procees, number 10 Downing Street announced in July 2016, that the Venerable Robert Springett, current Archdeacon of Cheltenham, which includes Childswickham and Willersey, will be the next Bishop of Tewkesbury. He was ordained and consecrated as a bishop by the Archbishop of Canterbury on 30 November 2016. He succeeds the Rt Revd Martyn Snow who became Bishop of Leicester. Village News offers its congratulations and marks the event by something from Sir Henry Newbolt……… Fidele’s Grassy Tomb
The Squire sat propped in a pillowed chair, His eyes were alive and clear of care, But well he knew that the hour was come To bid good-bye to his ancient home. He looked on garden, wood, and hill, He looked on the lake, sunny and still: The last of earth that his eyes could see Was the island church of Orchardleigh. The last that his heart could understand Was the touch of the tongue that licked his hand: 'Bury the dog at my feet,' he said, And his voice dropped, and the Squire was dead. Now the dog was a hound of the Danish breed, Staunch to love and strong at need: He had dragged his master safe to shore When the tide was ebbing at Elsinore. From that day forth, as reason would, He was named 'Fidele,' and made it good: When the last of the mourners left the door Fidele was dead on the chantry floor. They buried him there at his master's feet, And all that heard of it deemed it meet: The story went the round for years, Till it came at last to the Bishop's ears. Bishop of Bath and Wells was he, Lord of the lords of Orchardleigh; And he wrote to the Parson the strongest screed That Bishop may write or Parson read. The sum of it was that a soulless hound Was known to be buried in hallowed ground: From scandal sore the Church to save They must take the dog from his masters grave. 'The heir was far in a foreign land, The Parson was wax to my Lord's command: He sent for the Sexton and bade him make A lonely grave by the shore of the lake.
The Sexton sat by the water's brink Where he used to sit when he used to think: He reasoned slow, but he reasoned it out, And his argument left him free from doubt.
A Bishop,' he said, 'is the top of his trade: But there's others can give him a start with the spade: Yon dog, he carried the Squire ashore, And a Christian couldn't ha' done no more. The grave was dug; the mason came And carved on stone Fidele's name; But the dog that the Sexton laid inside Was a dog that never had lived or died. So the Parson was praised, and the scandal stayed, Till, a long time after, the church decayed, And, laying the floor anew, they found In the tomb of the Squire the bones of a hound. As for the Bishop of Bath and Wells No more of him the story tells; Doubtless he lived as a Prelate and Prince, And died and was buried a century since. And whether his view was right or wrong Has little to do with this my song; Something we owe him, you must allow; And perhaps he has changed his mind by now. The Squire in the family chantry sleeps, The marble still his memory keeps: Remember, when the name you spell, There rest Fidele's bones as well. For the Sexton's grave you need not search, 'Tis a nameless mound by the island church: An ignorant fellow, of humble lot--- But. he knew one thing that a Bishop did not.

CHILDSWICKHAM 2016 CHARITY BINGO & RAFFLE NIGHT
The Childswickham 2016 Charity Bingo & Raffle Night took place on Saturday 26th November and, once again, received fantastic support from across the whole village and local community. As in previ-ous years, it was another “great village evening”! Special thanks must go to Keith Bindoff for being our wonderful caller and Debbie Perry for selling the raffle tickets. I must also thank all those who do-nated Bingo and Raffle prizes. In all, too many to individually list here, but I REALLY APPRECI-ATE your kindness and generosity! We also had local company donations from Paul Dunsby, The Broadway Budgen, Morrisons, CO-OP Evesham and Tesco. The 2016 Childswickham Charity Bingo & Raffle, raised £445 which will be donated to St Richard`s Hospice in memory of Peggy Maudsley, a lovely lady, former organiser and great supporter of the bingo evenings. Carol Hawkins ran a tombola at the end of the evening with items left from the village fete which was sadly cut short in the summer, due to extreme weather. Carol made £41 for the fete funds. Finally I just wanted to let everyone know who came to this year’s bingo that George, who won jointly the full house children’s bingo game, did go home with a tub of chocolates!! I got caught out there! A BIG THANK YOU again and we look forward to seeing you all in 2017!

BROADWAY STATION Progress Jan 2017
Construction of the station building continues, and the first ceiling joists have been installed at the northern end. The southern end is not far behind, and the central section is following on. The steel roof trusses are being manufactured in the railway’s steam locomotive department at Toddington. In January preparations were in hand to construct the concrete bases for the footbridge staircases, although procurement of the staircases themselves is currently awaiting funding. A great deal of work has been done in the driveway. Following the installation of service ducts lamp posts have been installed, and at the time of writing a new wooden fence is being constructed at the base of the embankment on the left side of the driveway. Reclaimed GWR lamp posts have been installed at the edge of the station forecourt opposite the building. Elsewhere on site the palisade fence along the Broadway side of the cutting to the north of the station has now been completed. This was a big task, and kept a team of our volunteers busy for several months. Attention is now turning to removing spare building materials from the trackbed to allow space for ballast to be delivered during the coming months. Looking further afield, rails have been laid as far as Peasebrook Farm, and the trackbed from there to just south of the bridge over Childswickham Road has been cleared and ballasted. A temporary holding area for bulk deliveries of bal-last has been prepared beside the embankment to the south of the Evesham road. The ballast will be ferried from here to where it is needed by dumper trucks. The railway had a very successful year in 2016, and it is likely that the number of visitors will be another record. The 2017 season will start on Saturday 5 March, and will offer the usual variety of special events. More details can be found on the railway’s website - http://www.gwsr.com/

The practice of yoga is an art and science dedicated to creating union between body, mind and spirit. Its objective is to assist the practitioner in using the breath and body to foster an awareness of ourselves as individualized beings intimately connected to the unified whole of creation. In short it is about making balance and creating equanimity so as to live in peace, good health and harmony with the greater whole. This art of right living was perfected and practiced in India thousands of years ago and the foundations of yoga philosophy were written down in The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, approximately 200 AD
A Message for all villages from Severn Trent and Cllr Liz Eyre
I have been working with Severn Trent over the last few years to unpick the many sewage problems we
have in various villages. We are getting closer to understanding the problems. .
One of our key problems is fat mixing with items that should not be in the sewers.
Whilst carrying out recent investigations into sewerage problems within the area, Severn Trent identified
a number of issues that may cause blockages in our area. They would appreciate your help in preventing
future problems.
They have also found that items are being flushed down the toilet that shouldn’t be, such as sanitary
products, baby wipes and nappies.
This is alongside liquid fat, oil and grease.
Fat, oil, grease may not appear to be a problem when it is poured down the sink, but can harden like
concrete when it hits the walls of the cool sewer (even if you pour hot water down with it).
Over time this builds up, causing blockages, potentially leading to overflows coming out of drains, sewers
and into homes.
I'm sure you would agree that preventing these types of problems is far preferable than trying to rectify a
blockage and the mess that can also sometimes occur; not to mention the distress experienced by the
people affected.
These blockages can remain undetected for some time. The build-up of fat in sewers can also attract rats
and other vermin to the area.
A way to prevent this happening is to only use the sewers to dispose of just normal waste as sewers are
not designed to remove other items.
Please collect and dispose of fats, oils and greases responsibly. Wait for fat to cool after cooking and pour
it in to an empty margarine tub or other suitable container.
Clearing of sewer blockages can be expensive, time consuming and can cause traffic disruption. Should an
incident occur on your private drainage system any expense becomes the responsibility of you the house-
holder.
I and Severn Trent thank you in anticipation for your continued co-operation. Together we can help pro-
tect you and our environment. Cllr Liz Eyre
