I n reply, will state that V M M th. • • \ . rw helming majority of the people here are opposed to the social and economical theories of Mr. Debs, that there is not perhaps a single man in this city who enjoys to a greater degree than Mr. Debs the affection, love, and profound respect of the entire community .
l i e is Cultured, bril l iant, eloquent, scholarly and companionable, lovable in his n lutions w ith his fellow man. At home he Is known as "(}«ne," and that perhaps indicates our feeling towards him as a man, independent of bin political views.
He numbers his friends and associates among a l l classes, rich and poor, and some of the richest men l u r e , people who by very Instinct are hitter against social ism, are warm personal fr iends of Mr. Debs.
I l l s personal life Is spotless and he enjoys a beautiful home life. F e w public men have been more persistently nnd cruel ly misrepresented by the press of the country.

T h e r e w. have It. T h e capitalist law is of course the test of working class "honesty." It is unnecessary to apply s tub a cr i t ic ism to the capitalist class
The open, cheap, demagogic Insult, however, lies ill the tawdry effort to paral le l a labor organisation with the great capitalist trusts of the country. T h e first pragaraph reads as follows:
"The only trust having the impudence to openly assert that it is going to elect Its own trust representatives to public office Is the lals .r MMt
"The election therefore will i M M mine whether the common citizens i . tain control of publ ic affairs, or a l low the labor trust magnates to govern."
Such a howl of terror can only deceive the few who are not today famil iar wi th and interested in the aggressive combinations of the working class Working c lass organization is today recognized throughout the world as the safeguard of civil ization: and a mini who attack! 1 It openly and defiantly as Post has done simply brings down about his ears the sense
of justice and tie d. termination of society to protect itself.
But it Is a matter of surprise that th.- rft mocratic party should make use of su. h mater ia l at this time, wh. n it has M M m a k i n g the grand stand play that it is the party of labor, and has beguiled the servile Gompers Into a convulsive though abortive effort to l ine up the unions on the side of ita react ionary follies and crimes. A n attack on the labor unions by the democratic papers when' the democrat ic party M M M to win through their al legiance is certainly a unique way of conducting a c a m paign dependent upon the votes of laboring men.
T h i s old gag of a labor union being a trust is pretty passe and tiresome. T h e courts have worked Its senaelesa folly to the limit against every effort that labor has mad. to protect itself. But labor is militant and strong, and Is on th. t v . ot protecting itself by its ballots, and if labor is a dangerous trust today it wil l be still more so to th. oppr. ssiv. capitalist wh> n it has th.- courts and MjMMMNi In Its hands.
