Welcome to Fenley Field  A Happy New Year  to you all and a warm welcome  to Fenley Field for the first home game of 2012. 

Today we are delighted to welcome the players, officials and  supporters  of  Kidderminster  Carolians  RFC  to Fenley  Field  for  today’s  game  in  Midlands  2  West (South). We hope  that  they all enjoy  their day with us. Over  the  last  few  seasons,  KCs  have  become  good friends and games against them are always enjoyable. 

We are also pleased to welcome today’s match referee, Nick Edwards of the Warwickshire Society. 

 We didn’t get the new year off to the best possible start on the field of play last weekend at Leamington – but the game turned out to be a real thriller, with a stirring second half comeback by the team that ultimately came to nought. The only consolation we can draw from the result is a losing bonus point. 

We have now  lost  five of  the  twelve  league games played  so  far but we have  taken a losing bonus point from each of those losses, so the margins have always been narrow.  It appears that we often lose concentration against the lesser teams and fail to turn winning positions  into  points. But when  pitched  against  good  sides  – Barkers Butts, Berkswell, Newark, Bugbrooke – quite  the opposite occurs, as our  results have demonstrated.   To illustrate that point, our opponents in the 3rd round of the Intermediate Cup, Newark, still have a 100% record in their league, Midlands 2 East (N), and lead it by a street! 

Off  the pitch we got 2012 off  to a great start with a  terrific party on New Year’s Day – more details of that event later in this programme. 

On the business front, It’s good to be able to report to members that we are experiencing a much better  time  this year  than  last, when  it has  to be said  that our  financial  results were disappointing. We have attracted a  lot of new members, both VPs and playing, so our subscription income is up year on year.  

We have  also  attracted  a number of new  sponsors  and advertisers, but  could do with your help in finding more. We live in a harsh economic climate and it’s not easy attracting money  into a club of our nature. An example of this  is a new advertiser who took a full colour  page  in  the  first  six  issues  of  the  programme  this  season  but  then  declined  to extend the deal because his website measurement showed that his site had only received two visitors clicking  through  from ours! The harsh reality of business  life! Please  let me know of anyone you think might be interested in talking to us – we need them!

Today’s Visitors 

Kidderminster Carolians RFC 

Kidderminster  Harriers  FC  enjoyed  a  spell  in  the Football  League  but  it  is  not  commonly  known  that they were once a rugby union team. Starting life as an athletic  club  in  the mid‐1870s,  they  formed  a  rugby club and were very good. There were several clubs  in 

the town including one called Kidderminster, but the two sides never met and the latter eventually folded.  The “Harriers” had six seasons playing rugby football but to the surprise of many opted  for  soccer  in  the  late 1880s. This was about  the  time of Association's real rise, and the other rugby clubs in the area also gave up.  It was not until 1923 that Kidderminster re‐formed as a rugby club; then, in 1937, another club emerged, namely Old Carolians. They were the old boy’s  team  from King Charles 1st Grammar School  that had been  in  the town for some four hundred years. The 1939‐45 war saw the Carols cease playing,  but  Kidderminster  played  on  throughout  the  period.  Carols started up again in 1948, and for many years the annual derby game was eagerly  awaited.  There  had  always  been  talk  of  an  amalgamation,  and although there were opponents  in both camps,  it eventually came about in 1969. The new club became Kidderminster Carolians RFC and  it has had  its ups and  downs.  But  the major  happenings  have  been  in  the  National  Cup competitions when  twice  they were  losing  semi‐finalists, one  step  from Twickenham. That was a heavy cross to bear, but it has done wonders for the club’s standing. KCs  have  held  their  own  in  this  league  since moving  across  from  the Northern division of Midlands 2 West in 2007/08. We have a good record against them, having won 7 of the 8 games played over that period and this season enjoyed a comfortable win at Marlpool Lane in early October on a day more reminiscent of mid‐summer than autumn! Last  weekend  they  went  down  at  home  to  Newbold  in  what  was obviously  a  competitive  match  with  a  final  score  line  of  17‐25,  a significant  improvement  on  the  45‐13  loss  they  suffered when  visiting ‘Bold  in September.  It’s  their  form away  from  their Marlpool Lane base that has let KCs down this season, losing all five games played. We are pleased to welcome KCs to Fenley Field today and look forward to an entertaining game.

1st XV Match Report Midlands 2 West (South) – Saturday 7th January 

Leamington 25 ‐ Old Laurentians 20 OLs travelled to Leamington’s Moorefields ground to meet another of the league’s form sides but with hopes high of continuing their own excellent run of results. As well as the league points on offer,  this was  the  inaugural match  between  the  clubs  for  the Brian White Memorial  Trophy. Brian died suddenly last year and had been a long time stalwart of the Leamington club as well as a  close  friend of OLs, and  the  teams  served up a match  full of drama and excitement  that he would have enjoyed. 

OLs didn’t turn up for the first forty minutes as Leamington, inspired by half backs Northover and Carroll, completely dominated the game. With the home back row tearing  into anyone wearing green, OLs barely ventured out of their own half and appeared to have no idea on how to break the stranglehold.  Just eight minutes had passed when Carroll put a  teasing kick deep  into OL’s territory  and Northover  sniped  over  for  the  opening  try  from  the  lineout  that  Leam  pressure forced the visitors to concede. 

Then  Northover  put  over  two  penalties  in  quick  succession  to  lift  the  score  to  11‐0  as  OLs continued to fumble their way through the game, uncertainty compounded by basic errors.  

Then  on  the  half  hour  mark,  Carroll  latched  on  to  an  over  ambitious  OL’s  pass  and  ran unhindered for 50 metres to touch down, Northover converting for 18‐0. With no further scoring before the break, OLs turned round slightly fortunate that their hosts weren’t completely out of sight. 

It was now OL’s turn to enjoy the slight slope towards the clubhouse at Moorefields and for the next 35 minutes  they were a  team  transformed.  Just as Leamington had done  for  the  first 40, they were relentless in their pressure and dominance, scoring three excellent tries to come back from 0‐18 to lead 20‐18. 

First fly half Jon Bean opened OL’s account with a penalty just three minutes into the half. Then on ten minutes, and following quick lineout possession, centre Iain Wallis broke back inside and found Ollie Cowley on his  shoulder,  the prop going over  for a  try  that Bean converted well  to reduce the deficit to 10‐18. 

OLs were  now  completely  in  charge  and  Bean was  planting  some well‐judged  kicks  into  the corners to keep the pressure on. From one, Leam were harried into conceding a lineout and OLs took a quick throw but a defender intercepted it. His clearance kick was fielded by Ben Wiles and the  full  back  threw  a  long  pass  infield  to  Simon Bayliss, OL’s wing  arced  outside  the  defence before straightening to score a fine try and the margin was reduced to 15‐20. 

Five minutes  later another  strong drive by OL’s pack gave Bean  the  chance  to explore a wide blind side before sending Bayliss on his way  for his second  try, giving OLs  the  lead  for  the  first time at 20‐18 with just ten minutes to go. 

With just six minutes remaining Leamington reached OLs 22 for the first time in the half and were awarded  two penalties  in quick  succession. OLs held  firm as Leam attacked  from  the  first, but they opted to take a scrum from the second.  

This phase of play had been even throughout, but on this occasion the Leam pack put in a mighty heave,  OLs  appeared  to  lose  concentration  and  were  trundled  back  towards  their  line.  OLs attempted to snaffle the ball illegally, leaving the referee with no option but to award a penalty try, Northover converted it and Leamington had snatched the lead back. They stayed cool as OLs attempted to hit back over the remaining minutes and held their advantage to the final whistle to claim the win.

Sundry Stuff Identity Crisis Our new half back pairing of Luke Harris and Jon  Bean  have  settled  into  the  team  very well since  they  first came  together as a duo for  the match against Bugbrooke at  the end of  November  and  solved  what  could  have been a  real problem  for us,  following Denzil Evans’  retirement  from  1st  team  rugby  and Richard  Parker’s  injury.  However  the similarities in build and appearance between the two have led to confusion about which is which,  particularly  off  the  field  when  they don’t  have  those  convenient  numbers  on their  backs!  An  added  bonus  has  been  the enrolment  of  their  respective  fathers,  Guy and Rob,  into our band of  loyal supporters  ‐ and  Rob  has  become  a  paid  up  VP.  At  our party on New Year’s Day it was a pleasure to meet Mrs Bean for the first time, Jon’s mum. She and Rob were at the event with a party of friends  and  in  conversation  with  Mrs  B  it became  clear  that  she also  shares  the  identity problem, admitting that she too got the pair 

of  them muddled up when  looking  at  the action  shots  of  matches  on  our  website. What chance is there for the rest of us! 

Willis Re‐Named After  a  rather  high‐brow  New  Year's  Eve Dinner  Dance,  spoilt  only  by  a  lack  of bitter, Alan Willis acquired a new nickname ‐  Dyson  ‐  after  he  was  found  wandering around the coffee lounge.  On enquiring of his  obvious  problem  he  told  us  that  he was bag‐less,  hence  Olivia  Blair's  quick reaction  to  call  him Dyson.  Apparently he had  lost his man‐bag  the night before and was still looking for it.  When asked what it looked  like,  he  replied  that  it  has a Tesco logo on  it and had come free from the  supermarket!   He  then  pointed out, somewhat indignantly, that it was NOT a plastic bag but one of the  'for  life' bags.  The bag was,  sadly, never  found.  Anyone finding a lonely Tesco bag, please deliver it to Alan. Thanks  to Mike  Lewis  (and Olivia  Blair!)  for this contribution

New Year’s Day Party  If  you  couldn’t make  it,  you missed  a  great  party  at  the  club  on  Sunday  1st  January when upwards of 100 people welcomed the New Year in style. Topping the bill was that very popular local band, Dukes Jetty, who played two great sessions and really got the old place rocking to its foundations! 

But equally well received, and putting on a terrific show as well, was the Chris Tew/Cat Pawsey combo, who gave us a great hour of entertainment before the main event. Chris was joined for a couple of numbers by our very own Ricky Reed; and the two of them welcomed 10 year old Toby Corrigan (Bev’s son) to the microphone for a fantastic rendition of Wonder Wall. 

But  they weren’t  the only OL’s  talent on show, as  later Luke Harris  joined Dukes  Jetty  to sing another Oasis number – so we have got the makings of a great home‐made show for the future! 

Many thanks to the others who worked hard to make it a memorable day, from midday ‘til late. Paul Willis slaved away in the kitchen for a couple of hours preparing bacon and egg rolls; and Butch Reeve took charge of the door (and the ‘champagne’) and with James Melvin  in support made sure that the day realised a small profit for the club. Finally to Keith Baxter, who booked the band and stayed in touch to make sure they turned up! And they are booked for next year as well! 

And where would we be on days like this without the hard work and unstinting good humour of Chris and his fabulous bar team!

The Midlands Two Scene After  losing their 100% record at Fenley Field, Barkers Butts have continued serenely as  before,  disposing  of  Upton  on  Severn,  Silhillians  and  Banbury  since  to  retain leadership of the league, now with a comfortable seven point cushion over Newbold in second place. Bold  lost  to Berkswell & Balsall  the week before we toppled  that club, but have since chalked up wins over Droitwich and Kidderminster, albeit quite close in both cases. Leamington’s win over OLs  last weekend pushed  them up  into 3rd place, one point ahead of us in 4th. Silhillians challenge has stumbled of late as they have lost their  last three games,  including a surprising 10‐21 reversal at home against Banbury just before Christmas, their first home defeat. Berkswell got back to winning ways last week and are still a threat despite their massive points deduction, as they will certainly win  far more  than  they  lose over  the  rest of  the  season. Droitwich  shaded  Sils  last weekend with a narrow 9‐8 win and have only lost once at home – against OLs in the first game of the season. Banbury and Droitwich are maintaining contact with the top half of the table and nothing can be taken for granted by us or the other leading clubs as the margin is still quite narrow, Barkers apart. But looking increasingly in trouble are the bottom three of Upton on Severn, Pershore and Cheltenham North. It’s difficult to see where they will pick up the wins that get them out of danger. 

Local Club News Rugby  Lions  entered  the  second half of  the  season with  a  crushing  100‐6 win over hapless Manchester.  They  now  have  a  twelve  point  lead  over  2nd  placed  Dudley Kingswinford  in  National  3 Midlands  and  there  is  a massive  thirty  three  point  gap between them and 4th placed Mansfield. So, barring accidents (financial or otherwise) promotion back to National League rugby proper is virtually guaranteed.  Newly promoted Bedworth and Dunlop are rooted to the bottom of Midlands 1 West – Dunlop  are  2nd  bottom  and  seven  points  behind  Kenilworth  above  them.  Stratford Upon Avon are  somewhat precariously placed with  just  four  clubs beneath  them  in that  league but they did hammer Dunlop by 76‐0  last week. Having pulled out of the 2nd team league, Warwickshire 1, and losing their entire Colts set up to Wellesbourne, Stratford are not  in a good place right now! Undisputed  leaders are Sutton Coldfield, still with a 100% record, six points ahead of Bournville in 2nd and eleven points clear of Old Halesonians in 3rd place. Lutterworth’s outstanding season continues and they hold 2nd place in Midlands 2 East (South), five points behind leaders Peterborough Lions and ten ahead of Bugbrooke in 3rd. And they will be contesting the  Intermediate Cup semi‐final against Stafford next month with an excellent chance of making the final. Long Buckby still bring up the rear in the same division, with just one win and seven points to their name. After an  impressive  sequence of eight wins on  the bounce, Rugby St Andrews were beaten 15‐10 by  local  rivals Daventry  last Saturday. Daventry have been docked  five league points and would now be ahead of Saints in 3rd place in Midlands 3 East (South) but  for  that. The  impressive Northampton BBOB side  that we met  (and  lost  to!)  in a pre‐season friendly are clear leaders of that league. In Midlands 4 West (South), Rugby Welsh suffered their ninth  loss  in eleven games  last Saturday and are now bottom of that league.
