Intellian v-Series Maritime Ku-band VSAT Antenna System

1. General Description

1.1. Description The Intellian v240K is a 2.4 meter Ku-band marine VSAT communication antenna system. With its 3-axis stabilized platform and enhanced vibration and shock damping design, the v240K can perform extremely well on all types of ships that require “always on” and “high speed” broadband communications no matter how rough the weather and sea conditions are. The v240K requires minimal involvement to commission, is easy to operate, and is simple to upgrade and manage. Each unit comes preloaded with a ready-to-use, client-customized library that can be conveniently tailored further via PC software (also included with the unit), and firmware updates can be done entirely through the Wi-Fi ACU. Wi-Fi router enables easy connection and control of ACU, allowing operators to check the status of the VSAT. The all new Antenna Control Unit (ACU) supports Wi-Fi connectivity for a simple remote PC connection. If the ACU is installed at a great distance from the antenna, then the built-in Bluetooth connection module can enable a PC connection right alongside the dome. Robust and versatile, the v240K marks an new era for VSAT connectivity on the open water for deep sea vessels that require global coverage.

1.2. Scope This specification sheet describes Intellian v240K Ku-band marine VSAT satellite communication antenna system, antenna control unit and major components’ key specifications and features. In order to complete the system installation, the user is required to configure the Ship’s Gyro Compass and other BDE such as LAN and VoIP equipment for the desired application purpose.

2. Key Features

2.1. DVB/DVB-S2 and NBD Detection Capability The v240K is capable of detecting DVB-S/DVB-S2 signal, SCPC, and Narrow-Band signal. Thanks to its integrated digital tuner and the narrow band detector (NBD).

2.2. Wireless Communication with ACU The ACU of the Intellian v240K offers upgraded functions. The built-in Wi-Fi wireless network card enables the ACU to be wirelessly connected, and it can be either turned on and off by a switch. After connecting with Wi-Fi wireless network or setting up a network with ACU, it will be easy to monitor, control, and change the settings of Intellian antenna system wirelessly using laptops, smartphones, or any kind of wireless devices.

2.3. Antenna Log Data and Firmware Upgrade through USB The ACU of v240K now automatically stores all action data of Intellian antennas onto a built-in 256MB memory. With 256MB memory, about one month of data can be stored, and all existing logs are available to be transferred onto USB drivers. Also just by plugging in the USB with firmware update files stored, the firmware can be automatically updated and upgraded onto the ACU.

2.4. Bluetooth Module Support When the Intellian supplied Bluetooth module is equipped on a main control unit of Intellian antenna, users can access and control the antenna with a laptop that has Bluetooth capability. This will lead to easier and more effective ways to setup and maintain the system.

2.5. Maximized RF Performance The main reflector, Feed-horn and other RF parts are newly designed to maximize the antenna performance for maritime application. Not only the gain and Maximum Allowed EIRP Density are the highest level amongst the similar-sized VSAT antenna, Intellian v240K conforms to various ESV (Earth-Station-on Vessels) standards and FCC requirements. The main advantages of in-house developed components are removal of limitations by using ready-made products and optimization of performance during the roughest sea conditions.

2.6. Easy Installation and Minimal Maintenance The installation of v240K is a simple process compared to the existing antenna. Once a satellite’s signal peak position is acquired during the first-time setup, the antenna system will re-adjust all the parameters (bow adjust, home sensor offset, azimuth and elevation position) automatically even after it reboots, saving tremendous amount of time and efforts from users. Also the antenna is shipped to customers with embedded target satellites information. Therefore, customers can easily track satellites right after installation. The v240K is designed to offer easy replacements and repairs so that users only need minimum attention to maintain the system.

2.7. Various Modem Interface Intellian v240K provides various types of modem interface including iDirect INFINIT5000, iDirect X5, Hughes HX200, Comtech CDM-570/L and SatLink 1910. Also the v240K provides an OpenAMIP protocol of iDirect. Intellian v240K‘s ACU is connected to modems through a console port, D-SUB port, and Ethernet port. Most of

2.8. New Antenna Control Software Intellian’s newly developed Antenna Control Software – “Aptus” is a next-generation antenna control program which was developed based on the self-developed “Antenna Remote Management System (ARMS) Software Development Kit (SDK)”. The graphic-based program is designed on a MS.NET infrastructure in order to remotely monitor and control Intellian antennas through an IP network for bring friendlier, easier, and a more convenient operating environment for the user. This software provides Serial Connection and TCP/IP Connection with optional SSL encryption.

2.9. Web M&C Interface Intellian v240K features embedded webserver to provide web user interface (Web M&C) to manage and control the antenna system. Connection interface is provided by dedicated Management Port on the ACU front. Users can simply use web browser to access same functionality of PC software without additional software installation. The connection between user’s web browser and webserver is secured using SSL encryption. Administrator can edit and manage user-based access control list, providing control of permissions and levels of each user..

2.10. Support Customized Satellite Library The satellite library is easily created and uploaded to an antenna using our advanced PC program. The customized satellite library is provided to each customer and is loaded onto every antenna before the shipping. The antenna can directly search and track a target satellite without any additional satellite information setting.

2.11. All Parameters Backup & Restore Functionality All parameters can be stored on the internal memory of ACU. If you use the PC program which is provided with the antenna, all parameters can be backed-up onto external file. After the final set-up, all parameters can be saved and backed-up into a file using a PC program, and this file can be called to restore the previous parameters.

2.12. Auto Diagnosis Function The antenna self-diagnosis on the below list parts can be achieved by using ACU or PC program.

2.13. Brakes for EL/ AZ BLDC Motors The antenna has built-in motor brakes, which will prevent damages to a dish during the power-off mode. The motor brakes can be released for a weight balance adjustment purpose. Even if the antenna is in power-on status, once the “idle mode” is active, the two motor brakes will be released, and the torque value of the 3 BLDC motors will be set to “0”. Then the pedestal of the antenna can move freely for weight balance adjustment purpose.

2.14. Unlimited Azimuth Motion Range The unique slip-ring and rotary joint design eliminate cable wrap issues and offers unlimited azimuth capability to ensure clear and interruption-free data transmission. The durability of a rotary joint can be decreased if it transfers high BUC power. Therefore, instead of using a rotary joint to transfer BUC power and RF signal at the

same time, the v240K has adopted the high quality and durable slip-ring to transfer BUC power separately.

2.15. Improved Hardware Reliability Against Rough Sea Condition The hardware of the v240K was designed considering the Environmental Test Standards from the initial design phase. After several verification tests, the hardware was sustained the roughest vibration and shock conditions. Only the products that have passed through Intellian’s rigid ET standards can be launched to the market, and all Intellian products have been proven by the market to be very reliable as a result of this effort.

2.16. Easy and Reliable Firmware Upgrade All firmware upgrade can be made through the ACU without any hardware replacement. Intellian’s own uploading program is designed to serve as an easy and reliable remote firmware update. All MPUs on board have boot-loaders and always do check-sum to prevent wrong upgrade and damage of memory. Even when power gets turned off during an upgrade procedure, the process can be continued once power is restored.

3. Configuration

3.1. Overall Configuration The v240K Ku-band marine satellite VSAT communication antenna system is comprised of two major equipment groups; an above decks equipment (ADE) group and a below decks equipment (BDE) group. Each group is comprised of the items listed below. The ADE is comprised solely of the antenna radome assembly mounted on a ship’s upper deck or a location which has the most unobstructed line-of-sight view of a satellite. It is important to minimize blockages by any mast structure or funnel and interference with ship’s navigation and communication systems such as marine radars, radio and magnet compass etc. The BDE and all other ancillary equipment can be mounted on various locations of a ship. 3.2. Antenna Unit The antenna unit consists of a stabilized antenna pedestal, an antenna reflector, a feed assembly with a linear Noise Block Converter (LNB) and a polarization motor mounted on a stabilized antenna pedestal, Ku-band Block-Up Converter (BUC), and radome assembly. The radome provides an environmental enclosure for the antenna pedestal assembly inside it. This keeps wind, water condensation and salt-water spray off the antenna pedestal assembly. This prevents damage and corrosion which will shorten the expected life span of equipment. Two coaxial cables are connected between the Antenna Unit and the Antenna Control Unit (ACU). The Data/ RF/ Power RF cable is connected from the Antenna’s RF connector to the ACU ANT connector. It directly carries intermediate frequency (950-2150MHz) signals from the antenna assembly to the ACU and provides a tone switching function to the LNB mounted on the antenna.

3.3. Antenna Control Unit (ACU) The ACU allows users to control and monitor the antenna pedestal through dedicated function buttons and 2 lines Graphic VFD (Vacuum Fluorescent Display). The ACU dimension is fit for standard 19-inch rack. The ACU should be mounted on the front of an equipment rack where it is easily accessible. It is recommended that the antenna

control unit be mounted near where you can check the data communication status while controlling the antenna. The ACU is connected to the two coaxial cables, one LAN cable to satellite modem, and one cable to the ships Gyro Compass. The ACU communicates with the control board located inside of the antenna. The data signal is sent through the control RF coaxial cable. The antenna control board consists of two parts; pedestal stabilizer and antenna controller which stabilize the antenna against the ship's roll, pitch, and turning motions and process the antenna control signals from and to the ACU. The ACU interfaces with the antenna unit, satellite modem, Ship’s Gyro and provides the user-friendly design for user to operate the system easily.

3.4. PC Control Program Intellian v240K provides the advanced PC control program(APTUS) as a default package. The operator can install the pc program on his laptop and connect to the ACU through both the PC interface port (RS-232) or the TCP/IP port. The PC control program
