THE SYSTEMATIC PHYSICAL EXAMINATION OFINDUSTRIAL WORKERS.

THE importance of systematic physical examination ofworkers is well emphasised in a paper read before theSession on Industrial Hygiene at the Third AnnualCongress of the National Council for Industrial Safety,Chicago, last October, by Surgeon J. W. Sehereschewsky,of the United States Public Health Serviced Valuable assuch a procedure is for safeguarding the health of theindividual worker in industrial concerns, Dr. Scheres-chewsky emphasises its great importance to the progressof the science of industrial hygiene. The general intro-duction of systems of medical supervision, he says, withperiodic physical examinations in various industries willresult in the collection of a body of data similar to thosealready obtained in New York by the careful physicalexamination of several thousand garment workers, whichwhen studied will form a logical basis for practical recom-mendations to make all such industries safe from a healthstandpoint. Each industry thus treated will be enabled tosee to its own sanitation, with the result that the enormouseconomic loss caused in industries by preventible diseasesand disabilities will disappear.

OFFICIAL MANNERS.

To the Editor of THE LANCET.SIR,-The note in your issue of Dec. 12th under the above

title interested me much. I was recently a candidate for apost under the H - County Council-applications to besent in by Oct. 6th-but up to date I have not received evena printed postcard acknowledging my candidature ! In fact, had my chief not told me that he had received a "con-fidential " letter from the medical officer of health concerned, inquiring as to my credentials, I should have been in doubtas to whether my application had not gone astray in the post.I enclose my card. I am, Sir, yours faithfully,
