There is nothing else on planet earth like a local church-body of believers in Jesus Christ when they are truly bonded together. Nothing! Listen to these passionate words about the church from Bill Hybels: “Its beauty is indescribable. Its power is breathtaking. Its potenti al is unlimited. It comforts the grieving and heals the broken in the context of community. It builds bridges to seekers and off ers truth to the confused. It provides resources to those in need and opens its arms to the forgott en, the downtrodden, the disillusioned. It breaks the chains of addicti ons, frees the oppressed, and off ers belonging to the marginalized of this world. Whatever the capacity for human suff ering, the church has a greater capacity for healing and wholeness” (Courageous Leadership, p. 23).

Where else in the world can we fi nd any insti tuti on, any organizati on, any civic group or government agency that has this kind of world-changing potenti al? We could look far and wide, and we’d sti ll be searching. THE CHURCH IS IT! Look no further! The church is where people’s desti nies are changed, and the only place that has access to the power that will truly change a human heart. The church absolutely is “where no one stands alone.”

Inside this issue of Connecti ons you will discover a host of ways that God is using the Christi an Church of Clarendon Hills to be this kind of church. As you read, be encouraged, and maybe even give some prayerful considerati on to your next step of involvement!

In Christ,

“The church is where people’s destinies

are changed.”

The search for a new Student Minister has been concluded and we will be making an introducti on to the congregati on in late May and early June. In this process we have been in contact with over twenty prospects including several face-to-face meeti ngs with individuals known to be leaders in the student ministry fi eld. Out of these contacts and interviews a leading candidate emerged and we have now completed the fi nal due diligence steps with him. This individual will join the staff on July 1 in order to have ti me to prepare for a renewal of our student ministry going into this fall. We seek your conti nued prayers as we fi nalize this hiring and the move that will follow it. We are very excited about the prospects for this transiti on.

As you know, Chris Nelson has fi nished his service with CCCH as Associate Student Minister. Chris fi lled this positi on since the summer of 2011 and has contributed much to our students and the overall ministry during the interim. We congratulate Chris as he moves to the Compass Christi an Church in Texas to complete his formal internship training in conjuncti on with his educati onal program at Lincoln Christi an University.

CCCH MISSION PARTNER UPDATESit down with William Decena, a Haiti an pastor and G.O. Ministries partner living and serving in the bateyes (pronounced ba-tays), and you will learn a lot about the life of a sugar cane worker, which for him began at age nine. Today he ministers to sugar cane workers and their families. As a husband, father, grandfather, pastor, and leader, he dedicates his life to meeti ng the needs of those living in Batey Nueve and beyond.

Sugar cane workers head to the fi elds each morning equipped with a machete and a hat to protect them from the intense sun, but they do their work barehanded. At noon, a company truck brings lunch, however the small porti ons rarely sati sfy so workers spend money buying extra food or chew on sugar cane to stave off hunger. They clock out for the day around 6:00 p.m. and, in general, go home to a house that off ers litt le comfort. The men (all workers must now be at least 18 years old) wake up early the next morning to repeat their grueling routi ne. On average, a sugar cane worker earns between 63 and 80 pesos a day aft er thirteen hours of work(as of this writi ng, the exchange rate is about 38 pesos to the dollar).

Today, through William’s dedicati on, G.O.’s involvement, and God’s provision, you will fi nd roads, houses, sidewalks, an aqueduct, a school, and a church in Batey Nueve. In partnership with CCCH, William’s church off ers a nutriti on program to about 100 children daily. Last year clean drinking water became available through the ministry of the church. G.O. has purchased land in Batey Nueve as the fi rst step towards developing a sustainable agricultural project that will one day benefi t the community. But even with these improvements in place, the poverty that remains is brutal and the task before the church there is daunti ng.

Prayer Requests• for sugar cane workers, asking God how He may want you to bless them

• for the church that is acti vely serving workers and their families • for multi plied leaders in the church, and for perseverance in their service• for William and his family, that God would protect and sustain them and conti nue to use them mighti ly

Find out more about GO at www.go-ministries.org

If you worked in the sugar cane ields you would:

• report to work by 5:00 a.m.• end work at 6:00 p.m.

• labor in an average temperature of 86°

• be threatened constantly by mosquitoes

• earn about $1.88 a day
