Mosquitoes Ticks Black fliesIn Poland we have 47 species of mosquitoes and some of them are potential carriers of dangerous diseases including malaria and yellow fever. The territory of their occurrence is so rapidly increasing that only few regions of the world remain free from unwanted pests. Female mosquitoes feed on mammals and other warm-blooded species causing bites, males are not dangerous. Blood serves to supply the eggs with ingredients necessary for hatching. Most people are allergic to the substances released to the wound by a female mosquito. It can be observed by red blisters in the area of bites.

In Poland they have ideal conditions for growth in northern and eastern provinces. They are parasites on a large number of animals and people. In the world there are a few hundred species of ticks that are divided into three families: soft ticks, hard and less examined African mixed species. Soft ticks are the only ones without carapace on the back. Tick bite may cause lyme disease, menin-gitis and may be the cause of severe allergic reactions.

Black flies are small flies whose females are fed with blood and males nectar. They reproduce in clean, flowing water and their adult form lives approximately 3 weeks. They prey and cause bites in the middle of the day. When bit-ing, the female releases enzymes to the wound, being the reason for the allergies and irritation which lead to scratching the bitten places.

Ants are one of the most common species of insects present in the world. The number of species of ants in the world reaches twelve thousand, in Poland alone we can encounter about one hundred. Presence of people is not disturbing for ants and even creates a better environment for them than in nature. In the environment of ants there is division into males, females (queens) and worker ants. In most species, as opposed to worker ants, males and females are winged ants. Queens (females) lay eggs. The role of males is insemination of the queen.

German cockroaches and cock-roaches are insects present in flats and are omnivorous (they eat, among others, food products, human epidermis, hair).Cockroaches are characterized by red, black and brown colour and long antennas. German cockroaches are ginger. Lighter hue of this colour characterizes antennae and limbs. They prefer room temperature and are mainly active at night. They multiply rapidly. They live in corners, gaps in walls, wet places (e. g. space under sinks). They are disease-carriers, i.e. they spread dysentery, gastritis, tuberculosis and they cause allergies.

After insemination the males die. Worker ants are the most numerous and the most important group. They build nests, gather food, take care of the offspring. Ants eat plants and animals. Their food may also be material found dur-ing their walks on trees and shrubs. Ants are useful species. For humans they are bothersome insects. To protect rooms against their pres-ence, we should eliminate any leaks (at drain, doors, windows, floors). The floors and furniture should be regularly cleaned with cleaning agents and all leftovers should be removed.

They live in kitchens, warehouses and utility rooms. Their presence can be detected by a characteristic odorous scent.

Kitchen moths Clothes moths(food) Food moths are among the most trou-blesome vermin living in the kitchen. They can be encountered all year round. They are brown and grey, while the colour of their larvae depends on the source of their food (white, pink). Larvae of these insects are most often brought home with shopping products. It is them rather than adult individu-als that cause the most damage. They contaminate food, mainly feeding on dry products, i.e. groats, flour, dried fruit (raisins, plums), sweets, animal food. Adult individuals can come to our kitchen from the neighbours.

Clothes moths appear in flats, attics. Preferably they stay in places where the access to light is limited. Females lay eggs in materials which later constitute food for larvae.Larvae destroy the material in which they hatch, i.e. animal-origin fabrics (e.g. wool) and carpets, felt hats, furniture covers, furs, cotton products, etc. They leave small holes. They are visible at the turn of seasons (e.g. winter/spring).To protect our things against moths, we should air them often, beat dust out of them and not store them in too narrow wardrobes.

We wont be protected against them by placing food in plasticcontainers, as larvae make small holes in them and go inside.

Wasps Wasps are characterized by yellow and black colour and have stings which is their natural defence tool. They usually have nests in peaceful places (under roofs, in attics, in the ground). Inside the nest there are eggs laid by the queen.Wasps are most active in the second half of summer when they are at-tracted by fruit, sweet cakes. They are a plague for food manufactur-ers, shopkeepers selling sweet goods. Wasps carry bacteria to food products. Their venom is harmless, although bites are painful. The excep-tion is allergic persons whose heart may stop beating. Bites in pharyngo-nasal cavity and respiration system are most hazardous.

The trap should be emptied and luring liquid should be refilled after 4 weeks and in the case when the trap in 2/3 of its volume is filled with insects. Prior to emptying the trap make sure that all insects are dead. The trap should be placed at night or early in the morning, because at that time wasps show the lowest activity. The trap should preferably be placed on the way between the wasp nest and the place where insects look for food.
