LITERARY REVIEW
¡ryavaidyan, Vol XXXI, No. 3, February - April 2018, Pages 05 - 12
Introduction
Since 19th century the number of children in everyfamily is restricted by two. Our country wasconsidered as a developing nation earlier till 19th
century. One of the main strategies for thisdevelopment was the control over the population byimplementing family planning programs. Of course, our country has achieved much in the field ofeducation and economy and is now considered as adeveloped country.
Every couple wish for having a girl and a boy in thefamily. But the number of couple approaching for achild of desired gender is now increasing day by day.It is in this scenario that 'pumsavanakarmam'mentioned in °yurvedic classics, not being practicednow, has to be thought of and to be practicedscientifically.
Pumsavanam is a special regime or procedure carriedout in couples for achievement of offspring of desiredgender. It aims at maintenance of pregnancy to fullterm with achievement of child of desired sex. Theyshould undergo the procedure prior to conceptionand should repeat just after conception and maintainspecific regimen till full term.
Every woman after marriage wish to have her firstson like her husband. The definition of 'pumsavanam'is 'Pumsthvak°rakam karmam pumsavanam' whichmeans the procedure or ritual conducted for theachievement of a male child is termed pumsavanam.'Pums' means to grind, move, 'a' denotes a humanbeing, a soul or spirit and 'vana' means ceremony, rite, oblation, festival, etc.; pumsavana meaningmoving a human being, a soul or a man; bringingforth a male baby in early stage of life.
