Description:
Vairāgya Mārtaṇḍa is a Dharma śāstra similar to Manu-saṁhitā and Viṣṇu Smṛti. The book is generally ascribed to the sage Bhartrihari, who is said to have been the elder brother of the famous king Vikramiditya. Bhartrihari got a bad taste from material life and wrote several texts glorifying renunciation. It should be noted that although the principles of dharma and vairāgya that he espouses can in some cases be favorable for bhakti; bhakti is in no way dependent upon them. As the Bhāgavatam 11.3.31 states, bhaktyā sañjātayā bhaktyā — bhakti comes from bhakti. Bhakti is independent and is the cause of both dharma and vairāgya. On the other hand neither dharma nor vairāgya alone will grant bhakti. This small excerpt of the book lacks proper diacritics. I didn't even try to fix it up. However, it looks like it has many mistakes. I hope that it is useful for the sādhakas.

An ideal person attains this knowlege from the acarya (spiritual master). It is true that a materially detached person can attain this knowlege. YADA SARVE PRAMUCYANTE KAMA YASYA HRDI-STHITAH TADA MARTYO' MRTO'TRAIVA PARAM BRAHMA SAMASNUTE (Vairagya Martanda 4/65) When all kinds of desires for material sense gratification are irradicated from the heart of a person, he becomes liberated, even while alive, and he realizes the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the source of brahman. VISAYASI VISASANGA PARI JARJARA CETASAM APRAUDHA ATMA VIVEKANAM AYUR AYASA KARANAM (Vairagya Martanda 5/2) The life of a person whose mind is always bitten by the snake of material sense gratification, and who is bereft of pure self realization, is always miserable. TARAVO'PI HI JIVANTI JIVANTI MRGA PAKSINAH SA JIVATI MANO YASYA MANANENA NA JIVATI (VAIRAGYA MARTYANDA 5/8) Unlike the trees, deer (other animals) and birds who are all living, the life of a human being is successful only if he uses it to realize the Absolute Truth.. JATASYA EVA JAGATI JANTAVAH SADHU JIVITAH YE PUNARNAHA JAYANTE SESA JARATHA GARDABHAH (Vairagya Martanda 5/9) The only people who are glorified (by learned persons) as successful in this world are those who will not have to take another birth. The lives of everyone else are condemned like that of a donkey. BARO' VIVEKINAH SASTRAM BHARO JNANAM CARAGINAH ASANTASYA MANO BHARO BHARO'NATMA VIDO VADUH (Vairagya Martanda 5/10))

To those unintelligent people who consider the body to be the self, the study of Vedic scriptural knowlege is a burden. For people who are engaged in and attached to sense gratification, true knowledge becomes a burden. Those who are not at peace with themselves, their mind is a burden. Those who have transcended the mental platform, their body becomes a burden. SARVA JATIR EKA VIDHA CA ADAU SRSTA CA BRAHMANA TA SARVAH PRAKRTER ANSA PAVITRAH PANDITADHIKAH (Vairagya Martanda 5/13) In the beginning of creation, Lord Brahma created only one catagory of woman. They were all very high quality, intelligent, pure women who appeared naturally from him who were as ???????of nature. KEDARA KANYA SAPENA SA HI DHARMAH KSAYAM GATAH TADA KOPENA DHATRA CA KRTYA STRI CA VINIRMITA (Vairagya Martanda 5/14) When the daughter of Kedara, Sri Vrndadevi cursed, at that time the real, natural occupation was destroyed, then the angry Brahma created a kind of woman named krtya. KRTYA STRI TRIVIDHA JATIR BRAHMANA NIRMITA PURA UTTAMA PRATHAMA SA CA MADHYAMA CA ADHAMA VRAJA (Vairagya Martanda 5/15) That krtya woman was previously divided into three catagories by Brahma --the topmost quality, the medium quality and the lowest quality. UTTAMA PATI BHAKTA SA KINCIT DHARMA SAMANVITA PRANANTE'PI NA KURUTE TAM JARAM AYASAH KARAM (Vairagya Martanda 5/16) The highest quality woman is minutely religious (spiritually inclined) and devoted to her husband. Even at the cost of her life, she does not accept a paramore and the defamation it would bring. GURUNA RAKSITA YATNAD JARAM CA NA BHAJED BHAYAT SA KRTRIMA MADHYAMA CA YATHA KINCIT PATIM BHAJET

(Vairagya Martanda 5/18) Any woman, due to being carefully protected by her elders (husband, father, etc.), and who, due to fear, does not accept a paramore and somehow respects her husband is said to be a middle class woman. ADHAMA PARAMA DUSTA ATYANTA'SAD VAMSAJA TATHA ADHARMA SILA DUHSILA DURMUKHA KALAHAN VITA (Vairagya Martanda 5/20) A low born woman who possesses bad character and is irreligious, hard natured, hard speaking, and quarrelsome, is said to be of the lowest quality. PATIM BHATSARYATE NITYAM JARAM CA SEVATE SADA DUHKHAM DADATI KANTAYA VISA TULYAM CA PASYATI (Vairagya Martanda 5/21) She always serves her paramore but criticizes and chastises her own husband. She considers him (her husband) to be like poison, and thus causes him to suffer various kinds of miseries. UKTA PRATI UTTARAM DADYAD YA NARI KRODHA TATPARA SARAMA JAYATE GRAME SRGALI NIRJANE VANE (Vairagya Martanda 5/35) Any woman who angerly counter-argues with her husband, becomes a bitch in a village, or a female jackle in a lonely forest in her next life. YA BHARTARAM PARITYAJYA RAHASCARATI DURMATIH ULUKI JAYATE KRURA VRKSA KOTARA SAYANI (Vairagya Martanda 5/36) Any woman, with dirty intelligence, who, unknown to her husband, enjoys a paramore, she becomes an owl in her next life and lives in the hole of a tree. (Vairagya Martanda 5/41) Any woman, while hiding from her husband, looks toward other men, or enjoys them, she is taken to the hellish planets by the messengers of Yamaraja and a burning red hot iron club is place on her genital. ANRTAM SAHASAM MAYA MURKHATVAM ATI LOBHATA ASAUCATVAM NIRDAYATVAM STRINAM DOSA SVABHAVAJA (Vairagya Martanda 6/19) Canakya Pandit says: Lying, daringness, illusion, foolishness, extrordinary greediness, uncleanliness and cruelty are the original nature of a woman, therefore, a wise person should not trust them. STRINAM NAIVA TU VISVASAM DUSTANAM KARAYED BUDHAH VISVASE YAH STHITO MUDHAH SA DUHKHAIH PARIBHUYATE (Vairagya Martanda 6/20) A foolish person who trusts a woman, suffers various miseries throughout his life, therefore a wise person should not trust a cruel woman. PITA RAKSATI KAUMARE BHARTA RAKSATI YAUVANE PUTRAS CA STHAVIRE BHAVE NA STRI SVATANTRYAM ARHATI (Vairagya Martanda 6/40) (This is spoken by Uma, the wife of Lord Siva, to Narada Muni). Women should be protected in her childhood by her father, in her youth by her husband and in her old age by her grown up sons because women are unqualified to live independently. STRINAM NIRIKSANAM SPARSA BHASANAM KRIDANADI CA VARJAYET SARVATHA VARNI STRIYAS CA'PI AVALEKHANAM (Vairagya Martanda 6/71)

(This is spoken by Lord Narayana) Looking at women, touching them, speaking with them, and playing with them should always be given up. One should not even look at the painting or picture of a woman. JALUKEVA SADA NARI RUDHIRAM PIVATITI VAI MURKHAS TU NA VIJANATI MOHITO BHAVA CESTITAIH (Vairagya Martanda 6/94) "Certainly a woman is like a leech because she always sucks the blood of man, but a foolish man, due to illusion, cannot understand that her thoughts and activities are dirty. BHOGAI VIRYAM DHANAM PURNAM MANAH KUTILA BHASANAIH KANTA HARATI SARVASVAM KAH TENAS TADRSO'PARAH Vairagya Martanda 6/95 ) A woman, by physical enjoyment with a man, sucks all his seman and usurps all of his wealth. And by cheating words (lying), she attracts his complete mind. Thus who can be worst than her? VIHAYA SVA KALATRAN CA YO GRHNATI PARA STRIYAM LOBHAT KAMA SUKHAD VAPI SO'DHAMO NA ATREA SAMSAYAH (Vairagya Martanda 6/101) (Lord Narayana says) Any man who leaves his own wife due to greed or lust, and thus enjoys or accepts another's wife, is undoubtedly degraded. PATAYITVA SA CA PATED DASA PURVAN DASA PARAN TYAKTVA SVA SVAMINAM YA CA PARAM GACCHATI KAMATAH (Vairagya Martanda 6/102) Along with his previous ten and future ten generations of family members, he goes to hell. Similarly, if a woman, due to lust, accepts another man after giving up her own husband, she also achieves this same result.

PARASTRISU KRTAH SANGA PRITAYE DUHKHADO HI SAH MUHURTA VISAYASVADO JATO'NEKAVDA DUHKHADAH (Vairagya Martanda 6/103) (This is spoken by the messengers of Dharmaraja) For sense gratification, the association with anothers wife may seem pleasurable for a moment, but this moment of sense pleasure will cause misery for many many years. PATIVRATANAM GAMANE VALAT KARENA NISCITAM MATRGAMI BHAVET SADYO BRAHMA HATYA SATAM BHAVET (Vairagya Martanda 6/106) (This is spoken by Vrndadevi) Anyone who forcibly breaks the chastity of a chaste woman, is called the enjoyer of his own mother. He becomes as sinful as the killer of one hundred brahmanas. KO DHARMAH KIM YASAS TESAM KA PRATISTHA CA KIM TAPAH KIM BUDDHIR VIDYA DANAM CA PARASTRISU YAN MANAH PARASTRISU MANO YESAM SARVAM CA NISPHALAM (Vairagya Martanda 6/110-111) (Spoken by Ahilya, the wife of Gautama Rsi) If a person's mind becomes attached to another's wife, his religiousity, fame, respect, austerity, intelligence, education, and charitable nature, all become useless. NA HI DRSAM ANAYUSYAM LOKE KINCANA VIDYATE YADRSA PURUSASYEHA PARA DARA ABHI MARSANAM (Vairagya Martanda 6/112) For a man there is nothing that will destroy his duration of life more quickly than the physical association of another's wife (illicit sex). If a man engages in illicit sex with some woman, he must go to a ferocious hell and suffer for as many thousands of years as that woman has skin holes on her body. NA SAMBHASET STRIYAM KAMCITPURVA DRSTAM CA NA SMARET KATHAM CA VARJAYET TASAM NA PASYET LIKHITAM API ETAC CATUSTAYAM MOHAT STRINAM ACARATO YATEH CITTAM VIKRIYATE'VASYAM TAD VIKARAT PRANASYATI (Vairagya Martanda 11/65,66) (Lord Brahma said) Any man who desires to attain the ultimate benefit of life (liberation) should never speak to a woman; he should never remember a woman who he had previously known; he should never look at the picture of a woman; and he should never talk about women to others, because any of these activities can disturb his mind and cause him to fall down from the pure yogic platform. URO MUKHAM STANAM STRINAM KATAKSAM HASYAM EVA CA VINASA BIJAM RUPAM CA VIPADAM KARANAM SADA (Vairagya Martanda 12/37) (Lord Sri Krsna said) One should not look at the waist, face, breasts, eyes and smile of a woman because they are all seeds of ones ruination. The very form is always the cause of miseries. ANGARA SADRSI NARI GHRTA KUMBHA SAMAH PUMAN ASPARSAD DRDHATAMETI TAT SAMPARKAD VILIYATE (Vairagya Martanda 12/42) The woman is like fire, and the man is like a pot of ghee (butter). Due to the absence of fire, ghee remains hard, and in its presence, ghee becomes liquified. Similarly, a man who does not associate with women remains fit (for self realization), but in her association becomes disturbed with lust. JALPANTI SARDHAM ANYENA PASYANTI ANYAM SAVIBHRAMAH

HRDAYE CINTAYANTI ANYAM PRIYAH KO NAMA YOSITAH (Vairagya Martanda 12/107) A woman talks to one person, looks at someone else with lusty eyes, and in her mind, she thinks lustfully of even another person. Who can actually be very dear to a woman? KANTA KATAKSA VISIKHA NA LUNANTI YASYA CITTAM NA NIRDAHATI KOPA KRSANUTAPAH KARSANTI BHURI VISAYAS CA NALOBHA PASAIR LOKATRAYA JAYATI KRTSNAM IDAM SA DHIRAH (Vairagya Martanda 12/114) Anyone whose mind is not disturbed by the beautiful eyebrows and eyes of a woman; whoever's heart does not burn by the heat of anger; whoever is not tied with the rope of greed; whoever does not feel misery when sense gratification enters within the mind; such a sober and steady personality wins over the three worlds. MAITHUNASYA PARITYAGO BRAHMACARYAM TAD ASTADHA SMARANAM KIRTANAM KELI PREKSANAM GUHYA BHASANAM SANKALPO'DHYA VASAYAS CA KRIYA NIVRTTIR EVA CA ETAD MAITHUNAM ASTANGAM PRAVDANTI MANISINAH (Vairagya Martanda 12/144-145) To be celibate, one should give up eight kinds of sex indulgence. Remembering the woman, talking about her, playing with her, looking at her again and again, engaging in secret talks to others about women, making plans to be with her, being determined to get her, and engaging in physical enjoyment. These are the eight limbs of sexlife explained by the learned personalities. NARI MAMA GRHAM DEVA SADA TATRA VASAMY AHAM ATRASTHAH PURUSAN SARVAN MARYAMI NA SAMSAYAH (Vairagya Martanda 12/151) (Cupid said) The body of a woman is my house. I always live in it. Living there, I destroy the consciousness of every man. Of this there is no doubt. SA YENA VIJITO LOKE HARI BHAKTAH SA UCYATE MADYANTI MUNAYO'PI ATRA NARI CARITA LOLUPAH

(Vairagya Martanda 12/159) Whosoever has overcome her (a woman) within this world, is claimed to be a devotee of Lord Visnu. Because even the great sages become attracted and maddened by the character of a woman. PASYED GOVINDA PADABJE MANO VAI RAMAYED BUDHAH IHA MUTRA SUKHAM TADDHI GOVINDA PADA SEVANAM VIHAYA KO MAHA MUDHO NARI PADAM HI SEVATE JANARDANANGHRI SEVA HI HY APUNARBHAVA DAYINI (Vairagya Martanda 12/180-181) A wise man should engage his mind at the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Govinda, because they are the solace for everyone in this world and in the next (the spiritual world). Who is that foolish person who will give up the service to the lotus feet of Govinda, to serve the feet of a woman? By the worship of the lotus feet of Lord Janardana, one becomes free from the cycle of repeated birth and death. TASYA MATA MAHABHAGA PITA TASYA MAHA KRTI JANARDANA PADA DVANDVAM HRDAYE YENA DHARYATE (Vairagya Martanda 12/192) His mother is greatly fortunate; his father is a great spiritualist who has kept the two lotus feet of Lord Janardana in his heart. UNCLEAR RAKSA RAKSA HARE MAM CA NIMAGNAM KAMA SAGARE DUSKIRTI JALA PURNAM CA DUSPARE BAHU SANKARE (Vairagya Martanda 12/200) Oh Lord Hari, I'm drowning in the ocean of lust. Please save me, O Lord from this dangerous struggle This ocean is full of infamy and is very difficult to cross. PRATHAM AMRTARUPE CA PARINAMA VISALAYE YAMNALAYA PRADESAYA MUKTI DVARATI VISMRTE (Vairagya Martanda 12/203)

It [lust] is nectarean in the beginning but in the end is like poison and takes one to the house of Yamaraja (hellish planets) and it makes one forget the gate of liberation. BUDHYA TARANYA VIJNANAIR UDDHARAD'SMAKA MANATAH SVAYAM CA TVAM KARNADHARAH PRASIDA MADHUSUDANAH (Vairagya Martanda 12/204) Oh Madhusudana, please be pleased upon me. Oh Lord, as the boatman of my intelligence, give me realized knowledge, and deliver me from this world. HE NATHA KARUNASINDHO DINABANDHO KRPAM KURU TVAM MAHESA MAHAJNATA DUHSVAPNAM MAM NA DARSAYA (Vairagya Martanda 12/205) Oh Lord, Oh ocean of mercy, Oh friend of the grief stricken, Oh Lord of lords, Oh omniscient one, please be merciful upon me and please do not show me dirty dreams. YASO YASASVINAM SUDDHAM SLAGHYA YE GUNIMAM GUNA LOBHAH SVALPO'PI TAN HANTI SVITRO RUPAM IVEPSITAM (Vairagya Martanda 13/20) As a little spot of leprocy contaminates a beautiful body, similarly, a small amount of greed destroys a famous person's fame and a qualified person's good qualities. KINCID EVA MAMATVENA YADA BHAVATI KALPITAM TADEVA PARITAPAYA NASO SAMPADYATE PUNAH (Vairagya Martanda 13/34) It does not matter what it is. When somebody obtains something and becomes attached to it, if it is taken away from him, it becomes the cause of great distress. This human form of life is a gateway to liberation to heaven. Even after receiving such a form, who is that wise man who will spend this uselessly in collecting wealth? TRSNA VISUCIKA MANTRAS CINTA TYAGO HI KATHYATE STOKENA ANANDAM AYATI STOKENAYATI KHEDATAM (Vairagya Martanda 14/13) Giving up thinking about sense gratification is the mantra to remove the cholora of hankering. Giving up this thought is the root of happiness and thinking of this (visaya) is the root of unhappiness. ASANIRGUNA SASYANAM PHALITA SARADAPADAM HIMAM SAMVIT SAROJANAM TAMASAM DIRGHA YAMINI VYAVAHARABDHI LAHARI MOHA MATANGA SRNKHALA SARGANYA GRODHA SULATA DUHKHA KAIRAVA CANDRIKA (Vairagya Martanda 14/19-20) Material hankering is like a thunderbolt to the green vegetation like good qualities of a person. It is just like a winter season which increases the miseries of a person and destroys the fields of vegetation. This hankering is also like hail which falls on the lotus flower and destroys it. It is just like great ignorance of the long night of the winter season. It is a shackle to tie a maddened elephant of illusion. It is a vine climbing on the banyan tree of this creation. It is like the moon of a blossoming lily flower of distress. UNCLEAR JARA MARANA DUHKHANAM EKA RATNA SAMUDGIKA ADHI VYADHI VILASANAM NITYAM MATTAVILASINI (Vairagya Martanda 14/21) Not only this, it (hankering) is just like a box which accumulates the ornaments of wealth of old age, death and distress. It is the enjoyment of a maddened female elephant of distress and anxiety. TATHA SNANAM PRAKURVANTAM SAMIT PUSPA HARAM TATHA UDAPATRA DHARANCAIVA BHUNJANTAM NA ABHIVADAYET (BRHANNRADIYA PURANA-Good character chapter) At the time a Vaisnava is engaged in the following activities, one should not offer him his respectful obeisances: taking bath, collecting wood for sacrifice, picking flowers, carrying a

water pot, and eating. NR-DEHAM ADYAM SU-LABHAM SU-DURLABHAM PLAVAM SU-KALPAM GURU-KARNADHARAM MAYANUKULENA NABHASVATERITAM PUMAN BHAVABDHIM NA TARET SA ATMA-HA (SRIMAD BHAGAVATAM 11:20:17) The human body, which can award all benefit in life, is automatically obtained by the laws of nature, although it is a very rare achievement. This human body can be compared to a perfectly constructed boat having the spiritual master as the captain and the instructions of the Personality of Godhead as favorable winds impelling it on its course. Considering all these advantages, a human being who does not utilize his human life to cross the ocean of material existence must be considered the killer of his own soul.
