Hats off ISROAfter conducting the first ever GSLV D5

orbit raising maneuver on Monday, the IndianSpace Research Organization (ISRO)successfully completed the second round ofmaneuver on Tuesday. It is the second greatlaudable effort after its first success atplanetary exploration and the Mars OrbitorMission. The Geosynchronous SatelliteLaunch Vehicle (GSLV) equipped with an indigenous built liquidcryogenic engine fired the 1982Kg GSAT14 last Sunday foralmost 44minutes which is a communication Satellite into orbit with effortlessfeat. This triggered great emotional moments for the scientists andengineers at ISRO, Sriharikota, 80 kms off Chennai. What a fantasticexhibition of technological exuberance?

The cryogenic engine’s upperstage precision was that it put theGSAT14 into orbit with a perigee of 179kms and apogee at 35950kmswas a neat flawless perfection. This gives a roaring success for thecountry which joins the elite cryclub, a select club of spacefaringnations like United States, Russia, France, Japan & China. The healthof the Satellite was normal and that Satellite was well-oriented towardsthe Sun. GSAT14 is part of GSAT series of Satellites earmarked forcommunication purposes, constructed by ISRO. It is based aroundthe 1-2kg satellite bus and has a dry mass of 851kgs (1880lb). GSLVD5will launch 1982kgs GSAT14 satellite which will use its air propulsionsystem to reach its geo-stationary in space in sync with rotation ofthe earth. The scientists underwent two decades of long struggle asUS enforced technical embargo on Soviet Union who was our supplierin 1993. This indeed culminated the way for the mastery of cryogenicengine technology which involves liquid hydrogen at -253 degCelsius and oxygen at -183deg Celsius which is a tricky and complexfeat.

ISRO ChairmanK.Radhakrishnan said that he is proud to say TeamISRO has done it and is a great proud moment for the country. Headded that there would be a service of GSLV flights with our owncryoengines that put into orbit, communication satellites likeGSAT6,7Aand 9, G1SAT, Chandrayaan2 for Moon Mission and a fewmore communication satellites of 210 category. Then proceed to thedevelopment of GSLV-Mars3 which will put 4000kg satellite into orbit.He further added that there is definite niche market for commercialexploitation which has vast business potential along with alreadyexisting PSLV which has a ready global market. As a prelude, India hasbeen invited to take part in experimental projects on-board theInternational Space Station. ISRO and NASA would jointly build asatellite for earth observation. He said in the last 3 years, ISRO hasdone 45 different tests to ensure that cryo is a flawless mission. Thesecond Moon Mission will use a GSLV after a second success of thecryoengine shortly. Mission Director K. Sivan rightly said that behind1000seconds of flight is the effort of 1000 days of hard work anddedication thereby sacrificing their own personal interest.

It is a proud moment for India and ISRO scientists team should becommended for their pioneering efforts for achieving this feat. Thesuccess of the GSLV D5 signals the beginning of a new era of commercialviability for Indian Space Mission. At the level of technologicaldemonstration and outerspace exploration, GSLV has come as a shotin the arm for ISRO. This success will indeed speed up big projects fora Manned Mission for which a developmental flight of the full rocketin 2-3 years time. A lot more of hard work and dedication lies ahead ofISRO’s scientists and engineers to reach the ambitious target.
