Madras and now Chennai enters the 375thyear- A Chronicle!
If we trace the ancient history of Chennai, it is heart rendering andwe all should feel proud of its glory. It is one of the very importanttrade centres of the British India and got into prominence under Robert
Clive, then Governor General of Indiawho set foot here and thenexpanded the British Empire through his sheer diplomacy other thanthe trade for which they ventured in. Madras became the first in allfields right from civic administration, education etc. Chennaipattinamwas a small fishermen hamlet which was under the direct control ofVijayanagar rulers under whom Raja of Chandragiri, a place nearChennai, ruled this place well before 119 years back of the birth of EastIndia Company in India.
VenkatagiriNaicker was the local chieftain of Poonamallee andChennaipattnam with a 5 km periphery was bought by the East IndiaCompany after a long search upto Pondicherry.Francis Deyand AndrewHogam made it as their headquarters for the trade dealings. FrancisDey and Andrew Hogam, the company officials hit the deal with thekey assistance of PeriThimmappa, the notable local businessman. Theplace was called as Madras by the British and it was a barren landwithout any notable habitation. Francis Dey, Andrew Hogam andPeriThimmappa were the founders of great Madras which has 375
years of history to cherish. In 1947, Madras had become the capital of compositeMadrasstate comprising parts of Andhra and Kerala and Karnataka. In 1923,the periphery of Madras was barely 80 square k.ms. and it wasexpanded to129 square k.ms. In 2011, the Chennai City was expandedto a periphery of 426 square K.ms. comprising of 8 Municipalities, 8major panchayats and 25 panchayats and merged with ChennaiCorporation. Madras state was rechristened as Tamilnadu state and in1996, Madras was made as Chennai.
The first English Hospital was formed in 1664 which was insideFort St.George. Then in 1842, it was transferred to the present sitewhich was called as Government General Hospital where treatmentwas offered equally to Indians also. The first Madras Corporation wasformed in 1668 in Ripon Buildings which has the distinction of thefirst in the country. It was the first Local Body in the whole of Asia.Madras also was the battleground for wars with Bijapur Sultan,Aurangazeb and British got Madras with a treaty with Aurangazeb. The Fort St. George was constructed between 1756 and 1783 at a costof 77 lakhs which had a mint, a hospital, armoury, a stone house and achurch.Madras was once captured by the French and the Englishregained it in 1748 by a treaty with them in exchange of an island inNorth America.

Prime MinisterN a r e n d r a M o d i s 6 8 th
Independence dayaddress from the ramparts of RedFort, New Delhi is something
different, something special andinvigorating. It evokes a sense ofnew thinking, belonging andresponsibility for achieving afaster and sustainable growthpath and empowering the poorand needy to be better citizens.
He is the first one to addressin the open arena without usingbullet proof protection whichshows his courage and nearnessto the people. Normally,Independence Day speeches byPrime Minister fall into thecategory of mandatory preparedtexts and take over events but hisspeech was extempore. It was
more like a running commentarythan a cricket match.
The speech was mostlywatched, mostly tweeted andmostly talked about listsdragging the crowd with raptattention. The common man wasallowed to participate in the greatnational event. He was attired ina Bandhini Kutch origin, a purelySwadeshi dress. He enteredexuding confidence. He verilyemphasized and said I am notPrime Minister, I am first servantreminding the true state of electedrepresentatives as servants of thepeople who have chosen them to
act on their behalf which showshis modesty that drew hugeapplause from the crowd.
Gandhiji was the first toproclaim that the President is thechief servant. He began with asalute to those who sacrificedeverything for the nation. Hesuggested that a nation is notmade by great men but built byits people, built by its soldiers, farmers, youth, workers, teachers, scientists and martyrs. Politiciansand government do not build anation but they merely rule it. Agood speech is judged by its styleand substance but above all itsimpact. His message was
abundantly clear without anyhype back to the basic.
Modi said that leaders aremeant to take responsibilitiesseriously which come frompopular mandate or nomination. The keyword is Service in ademocracy just or seva or servicefor a true spiritual seeker to reachsalvation. He added that I am nothere to rule, I am here to servethe masses.
He said loud that small stepstaken quickly taken across thecountry can have a greater impactthan big schemes implementedslowly with tardy progress. Just
imagine that 125 crore peopletake a step forward, the countrywill move 125 crore steps forwardand he offered to work harder asIndias Prime Minister. He laidemphasis on a dirt free India ason a digital India. He promised

changes in governance, a swiftergovernment in the place ofbureaucratic establishment,
pulling in different directions fora red tapism, corruption andmalfeasance putting the peopleall sorts of sufferings anddifficulties.
He started with the basicsthat he intended to ensureseparate toilets for girls and boysin all schools in the country. Hecalled for corporate houses toobserve total socialresponsibility of serving thesocietyand assistance in thisnoble and onerous task ratherthan being always in profitmotives. He spoke at length to ashared national character by
speaking to shared shame likerapes.
He cautioned that rapists arealso somebodys sons. He alsohas parents if restrictions areplaced on sons like daughters, there will be no rapists. With goodgovernance and development ashis buzzwords for progress, heannounced PradhanMantri JanDhanYojana scheme aimed atfinancial inclusion that would linkthe poor with the bank accountand provide them a debit cardand insurance cover worth Rs 1lakh.
He announced the big
reform of dismantling thePlanning Commission which is invogue for the past 50 years whichis adopted to Socialist Russiasstyle will be soon carved into anew institution will have newbody and outlook for a greaterrole to states for which hewelcomed suggestions from thepublic. Despite his big push forchange, he lustily paidencomiums to his predecessorsthe great works done by them forattaining development sinceindependence which shows hispolitical maturity and acumen. Hevoiced his concern for movingforward on the basics ofconsensus rather than on thebasis of majority mark in parties. He vehemently attacked casteismand communism as poison whichacts as a great hindrance toprogress which should be totallyrooted out from the society.
He attacked communalismthat there should be a 10 yearmoratorium on violence. Onterrorism, it is done by misguidedyouth who should renounceviolence and should strive to taketo the path of peace. What isneeded is an initiative of creativethinking for an optimumutilization of youth capability.
He exhorted themanufacturers of products andgave a slogan of No defect, Noeffect. A product should be ofhigh quality and should beenvironmentally sensitive. Hecalled for Made in India slogan
for achieving global excellenceand new dream of Swadeshi. There should be more impetus inexport oriented manufacturingunits like China, Taiwan and Korea
since the country is spendingbillions and billions of dollars onoil imports, electronic goods andiron and steel implements. Hecalled for manufacturingrevolution for financial inclusionand digital makeover. He thenexamines the inwards of societyViz. agricultural suicides which isa scar and could not be a decentsociety.
The tenor of his speech wasabout sanitation, dirt, toilets andcleanliness attempting to evokeeveryday civics. He laid emphasisfor model villages to drag ruralIndia for attaining all sorts of
developments and urged everyM.P for the cause. Overall he wasvery cautious of addressing allIndians as directly as possible.
He sent a stern messageacross the border too. If ourancestors could throw thecolonizer out, together cannot we
just get along now? Instead ofinternally fighting each other, letus fight poverty altogether. HowIndia renew itself and face thechallenges can be seen in his trueimplementation for building astrong India.
