Founded in 1296 by King Mengrai, Prince of Chiangsaen, Chiangmai is the second largest city in the country. Originally a walled city surrounded by a moat, it is a treasure trove of ancient temples, has a unique architectural style known as “Lanna Thai”, a gentle culture and traditional handicrafts. Complementing this are the various exotic hilltribes who dwell in the high lands and add allure to the countryside, promising a great adventure holiday. Chiangrai, 394 meters above sea level, is the northernmost province in the country. Founded in 1262 by King Mengrai and located on the banks of the Mae Kok river, it borders Myanmar in the West and Laos in the East. The apex of the Golden Triangle is where the boundaries of the three countries converge to connect. Mae Sai, a bustling border town, is the northernmost point in the province while Chiangsaen was the first capital of the Lanna Kingdom. Several different hilltribes live in the province Mae Hong Sorn, city of the mists, lies in a pristine valley. Virtually covered in mist all year round, it contains boundless attractions such as Fish Cave, waterfalls, Myanmar style temples and hilltribes, in particular the “Padong Longneck Tribe”. Local culture is evident in the unique architecture while the friendly local people display a rich mixture of Lanna Thai, Karen and Myanmar traditions. Tour Description : The trip entails a pleasant 15 km.winding drive up 3,500 feet above sea level to visit Wat Prathat Doi Suthep, the most sacred temple in the city. You then exercise your heart, lungs and limbs ( perfect for couch potatoes and those with beer belly ) by ascending the steps to the temple, guarded by two magnificent nagas (naks). Constructed in 1383, this symbol of Chiangmai contains the holy relic of the Lord Buddha which is enshrined in the magnificent, glowing golden pagoda. A bird’s eye view of the entire city and the surrounding areas can be seen from the temple grounds. Continue by truck along a bumpy mountain road to visit the White Meo hilltribe village. It’s a scenic route. Migrants from China, they prefer to live in simple, isolated and self-sustaining villages while preserving their primitive culture, ancient customs and gorgeous embroidered costumes. Return back to town.

Tour Description : Situated 26 kms. south of Chiangmai is the ancient city of Lampoon, known in historic times as the Kingdom of Hariphunchai. An ancient Mon kingdom, it was founded in 660 and is the oldest existing city in the kingdom. As you enter the city, the remnants of the old fortified city walls and the surrounding moat, constructed in the 16th century, are still evident. See the ancient temple Wat Prathat Hariphunchai with its golden stupa. The temple grounds contain two impressive chedis, the taller of which, Ahtit Dayalat, stands a majestic 51 meters high. Take time to explore the teak-wood library which houses many ancient Pali scripts. There is an old Lanna style pagoda and a huge call-to-prayer gong. Visit Wat Jammathevee, named after Queen Jammathevee, the first ruler of Lampoon. The style of the pagoda is unique with niches containing Buddha images. It’s quite different when compared to other temples that you normally come across. Proceed on to Pasang village to feel and sense the atmosphere of a small northern community. Pasang is well known for its cotton weaving industry and its lovely, demure ladies. Return back to Chiangmai

Tour Description : Lying south of Chiangmai, the granite mass of Doi Inthanon, at 8,500 feet above sea level, is the highest mountain in the country. Designated as a national park, the moist natural environment is habitat to a large species of birds, animals, flowers and fauna. After a final steep climb, the summit is surprisingly flat though misty, cold and windy. Visit the pagodas built in honor of their Majesties the King and Queen. A visitors’ center contains information in Thai and English. A small chedi above the visitors’ center contains the remains of Chao Inthawichayanon who died in 1897, the last independent ruler of Chiangmai, before the Kingdom of Lanna was incorporated into Siam. Enjoy the cool cascading waters of Mae Klang and Vachiratharn waterfalls. Visit a Meo hilltribe village which is a Royal sponsored project, and a poor Karen hilltribe village. Lunch is included. ( The drive up to the top of the mountain is exhilarating. Sweaters or warm jackets should be taken along as it can be extremely cold at the top. )

Tour Description : Visit and explore 4 revered temples in Chiangmai. All constructed during the Lanna period, each reflects the glory, splendors and nobility of a rich historical era. In the West of the city lies Wat Suan Dok. Built by King Kuna, the large white chedi towers above the numerous small ones and contains the ashes of the Lanna King and the remains of many generations of the old Chiangmai Royal family. A short distance from Suan Dok Gate ( Western Gate ) is Wat Phra Singh. First built during the reign of Phra Chao Kham Fu ( 1328-1335 ) the temple compound includes the Lai Kam Chapel and the abbot of this important temple is the head of the local religious administration. Lying smack in the heart of the city ( almost right in the middle of the square-walled city ) is Wat Chedi Luang. The large chedi ( the biggest in the city ) behind the viharn was constructed by King Saen Muang Ma around 1401. Originally 90 meters high, it is now a mere 40 meters as the result of an earthquake in 1545. A small building near the main entrance encloses the “Sao Intakin” ( spirit of the city ). Last but not least is Wat Chiang Mun. Lying in the Northern part of the old walled city, it is the oldest temple within the city walls. Constructed by King Mengrai ( 1296-1311 ) the founder of Chiangmai, it is said that the king spent his last years at this temple. After all this heavy stuff, how about something light. Drive around the old city to see the moat surrounding it and the ruins of the city gates. Then visit the largest central market, Worarot Market, alive with its daily hustle and bustle. Exotic fresh fruits, preserved food, local delicacies, clothes galore, flowers and other nick nacks, all at reasonable prices.
