August 4, 2012Hello Again,

While writing for this issue of Hello Again, I read a sentence to a member of our editorialstaff and asked, “Is the correct word effect or affect?” He quickly replied, “Impact.”

Isn’t this an example of how we each have the right to our own opinion? What an impact, effect, or affect we could have in this greatest of all countries if we actually stood up for whatwe believe to be right?

A few years ago if all of the American people spoke up and acted for what they believed in—do you think the privilege of prayer and religion would have been taken away from our childrenand driven out of our government offices and schools? In fact, we were not even allowed tovote. Who said so—was it you or a very small minority along with a few very powerfulgovernment officials who jammed it down our throats? Now some who were not even alive haveaccepted it as being American. It’s not, it’s anti-American. One more right we have lost.

The divorce lawyer said to her female client, “I’m sorry but I haven’t succeeded in reachinga settlement with your husband that would be fair to him.”

“Fair to him?” the client screamed. “I could have done that myself. What do you think I hireda lawyer for?”

I received a copy of an e-mail, which I felt was worth sharing with our readers:

To President Obama and all 535 voting members of the Legislature…

a. The U.S. Postal Service was established in 1775. You have had 237 years to get it rightand it is broke.

b. Social Security was established in 1935. You have had 77 years to get it right and it isbroke.

c. Fannie Mae was established in 1938. You have had 74 years to get it right and it is broke.d. War on Poverty started in 1964. You have had 48 years to get it right; $1 trillion of our

money is confiscated each year and transferred to “the poor” and they only want more.e. Medicare and Medicaid were established in 1965. You have had 47 years to get it right

and they are broke.f. Freddie Mac was established in 1970. You have had 42 years to get it right and it is

broke.g. The Department of Energy was created in 1977 to lessen our dependence on foreign oil.

It has ballooned to 16,000 employees with a budget of $24 billion a year and we import moreoil than ever before. You have had 35 years to get it right and it is an abysmal failure.

You have FAILED in every “government service” you have attempted to oversee while increas-ing the cost every year.

AND YOU WANT AMERICANS TO BELIEVE YOU CAN BE TRUSTED WITH A GOVERNMENT-RUN HEALTH CARE SYSTEM?

End of E-mail.

I do not have the time or resources to accurately substantiate allcontained in this e-mail. Yet! I have no reason to doubt either.

My question is—What can big government be trusted with?

Many of our seniors or retired friends have sold their homes and movedto other states to be free of the New York school tax. Our schools arebasically controlled by a huge state Department of Education, and not by

Page 7: Valley Pennysaver 8.4.12

Original Valley PENNYSAVER • August 4, 2012 Page 7

local school boards. I truly believe if a local school board with its local teaching staff, withinput from the community, were allowed to operate the school property and teach subjectswhich they felt best suited their area, the education program would then be in the correcthands. With school and property tax so high, some cannot find a buyer for their property. Oneprospective buyer said with my wife and I both working we could get the mortgage paidwithin 15 to 20 years, but those strangling taxes go on forever. I believe the local school staffand school board members should be praised considering the state mandates wrappedaround their necks.

The following is a true story. Friends of ours, in planning their financial needs for retirement, sold their home in upstate New York which was smothered with taxes—school tax being theheaviest—uprooted their way of life and purchased a near-equal in value house in Virginia.Their total property tax is now in the $600 annual range (this includes 100% of all realproperty taxes) and not in the many thousands as their former New York State home.

“And now, my friends,” said the campaigning U.S. Senator, “I wish to tax your memory.”“Good heavens,” muttered his colleague, “why didn’t we think of that before?”

The famous lady comedian, Phyllis Diller, offered this advice to married couples. “Never goto bed mad. Stay up and fight.”

“Mommy, I can’t marry him!” the bride-to-be cried to her mother. “He’s an atheist anddoesn’t even believe in hell.” “Marry him,” her mother said, “and between the two of us, we’llconvince him.”

A little blarney lightens the soul. Last Saturday at an auction, I bought a parrot for mywife, paying a substantially higher price than I could have bid. After the auction I asked Timif the parrot could actually talk. He said, “Who do you think was bidding against you and ranthe price so high?” J.R. merely said he would talk, not what he could say.

I ordered a beautiful diamond ring for my wife from a so-called old-time respectablemail-order jeweler and paid for it in advance. When it arrived by U.S. mail the package wasstamped with “Handle With Care—Glass Contents.”

Prior to marriage I insisted on a short courtship. I realized it would not be smart to give myfuture bride too much time to look around and compare.

Before our marriage, my wife’s sister said, “Honey, I just don’t know. He is a publisher andmay be a little bit cracked.” I know my future wife replied, “I understand, but he’s not broke.”

From this, I feel confident you will agree with, “The Good Lord must enjoy humor. Why elsewould he have created the Irish?”

You know the old saying, “Practice makes perfect.” If you search the scriptures, you mightfind in written proof that our creator practiced with the Garden of Eden and then the weeisland of Ireland. Remembering all he had learned, he then built upstate New York.

The Holy Bible says that God created man in his own image, which to me is proof that heknew he would be proud and would love us.

Accepting this, why do so many show such disrespect towards him? Face it, he did not haveto give them life but he did and is willing to forgive. Life in his created world is a finer, happierplace to be when we accept him and live by his rules.

I hope some pastor will see you in church soon. If you do, someday your children will speakproudly of their Mom and Dad.

The title could bring nostal-

gic memories, however in this

case it is not about taking a

short trip to see Grandma and

Grandpa. Around about us is

a beautiful valley - the

Mohawk Valley.

Do many of today’s resi-

dents ever consider how the

valley got its name? Do you

ever wonder if today’s Mohawk

people live within driving dis-

tance of their ancient

Homeland?

We know that in recent

years some native people have

established themselves within

our area and they teach about

their traditions and culture

and the area is better for those

teachings.

However, there are those

who still come to visit a land

that once was their people’s

ancient homeland. Every year

it has become the habit for

three members of the Six

Nations to make a pilgrimage

to the Mohawk Valley. They

come quietly and peacefully to

visit not only their ancient val-

ley but present day friends.

Early in June one of these pil-

grimages took place. Two twin

brothers, Don and Ron

Monture and a cousin, John

Anderson, made the trip from

the Six Nation Reserve across

the border from Niagra Falls.

Ron and Don are the Bear

Clan of the Mohawk Nations.

John is a Tuscarora. This year

the travelers found their way

to meet Fred Lee at the office

of “The Original Valley

Pennysaver.” It was most fit-

ting that decendants of the

original Mohawk

people could meet

the originator of a

present day original

Valley paper. The

meeting was a joy

for every one

involved. Our Native

American friends have now

returned to their homes along

the beautiful Grand River in

Canada. Their friends in the

Valley of the Mohawk await

their next visit to their ancient

homeland.

Going home for a visit

This piece of hand clay (Left) was discovered atWagner’s Hollow Indian Site by Canajoharie collectorEdward Brown. The tool, typically used circa 1600s,was used to form pots similar to the one pictured here.

This clay vessel, crafted by Ron Monture, isdesigned to replicate North-EasternWoodland cultures of the 1300-1600 AD era.Monture’s Native American pottery is typi-cally fashioned after the Iroquois, Huronand Susquehannock cultures.

by Elizabeth A. TomlinBeen missing the good ole’

days when service for your

vehicle was just around the

corner?

Well, look no further than

the newly established Skinner

Service Station located just

west of Little Falls at 5637 St.

Rt. 5, in East Herkimer.

Roger Skinner is a name well

known throughout the

Mohawk Valley for expertise in

automotive knowledge and

good relationships with cus-

tomers. Now, in this new loca-

tion, the business’ motto is to

provide customers with a

renewed confidence in the old-

fashioned values and service

they offer.

“We have a ‘50’s attitude and

offer old time service,” Skinner

says, adding that the business

is looking for an old time hose

with a service bell to install at

the facility.

Modern features such as

four up-to-date service bays

and a spacious waiting area

complete with a large flat

screen television and a variety

of recent publications, ensures

speedy service — and a com-

fortable wait.

“We are also catering to

towed customers,” Skinner

remarks. “We are offering a 24-

hour towing service and we are

AAA approved. It’s unique to

be AAA approved. We have a

tremendous amount of letters

from customers who really

appreciate the service we’ve

provided to them.”

Skinner says their towing

service includes the NYS

Thruway and two tow trucks

and drivers are available at all

times.

In addition to being a NYS

registered repair shop, Skinner

Service Station is also a NYS

registered motor vehicle retail

dealer and is registered to

inspect both automobiles and

motorcycles. Four mechanics

are on duty.

“We are already looking to

expand,” Skinner says, “and

we are willing to work overtime

to accommodate our

customers.”

Roger is proud of his

27 year involvement

with the local Rotary

Club and the Red Cross

— and that Skinner

Service Station’s grand

opening corresponds

with his and Mary’s

44th wedding anniver-

sary. “We’ve been

together since kinder-

garten!” Skinner says

proudly.

Now those are old-

fashioned values!

These two items have simi-

lar shapes, but their purposes

are about as different as two

things can possibly be. The

first is used to help nourish

the body and the second is

designed to separate body

from soul.

Both items are from Willis

“Skip” Barshied Jr.’s collec-

tion of antiques.

The item on the left is a

maple sap spike used to tap

maple trees so the sap could

be collected and boiled down

into syrup. It is one of many

different designs that have

been used over the years.

The one on the right is a

cartridge for a Civil War-era

Burnside Carbine. The

weapon was invented in 1856

by Ambrose Burnside. During

the Civil War, 55,000 of the

breech-loading carbines were

purchased by the Union

Army, making it the third

most widely used behind the

Sharps and Spencer carbines.

Although his carbine was a

success at war, Burnside was

not. He was a general in, and

onetime commander of the

Union Army of the Potomac

and is widely regarded as one

of the most incompetent to

serve during the Civil War.

Burnside is remembered

today, in a way, on a daily

basis. His flamboyant style of

facial hair gave us the term

‘sideburns.’

by Katie RannoOn July 30, concert-

goers came down to

the St. Johnsville

Marina for the weekly

Monday night Concert

at the Marina Series to

hear the Second Time

Around Big Band. The

concert was spon-

sored by the St.

Johnsville Chamber of

Commerce. As put by

Chamber president

Maragaret DiGiacomo,

“Each week, a differ-

ent non-profit holds a

concert [at the mari-

na].” The Chamber

held a raffle and had

their own refreshment

stand, which included

brownies, ice cream,

and a topping of

cubed oranges. All

proceeds from the

Chamber’s raffle and

refreshment stand will

be going to help with

town projects and

events. When asked

why people come out

to the concerts at the

Marina, DiGiacomo

says, “They’re free.”

She also went on to

say that it’s also a

time for people to

socialize and enjoy

good entertainment.

And indeed they did.

The Second Time

Around Big Band gave

the crowd a variety of

vocal and instrumen-

tal big band classics,

including “Fever,” “It’s

the Talk of the Town,”

and “It’s Only a Paper

Moon.” They also took

the time to share in

conversation with the

audience and give

some history about

big band music.

Many came out to

just enjoy the concert,

but others came out to

support some of the

performers in the

band that they knew.

There are two more

weeks left in the con-

cert series. On Aug. 6,

the Karg Brothers will

perform. Aug. 13 will

be the last concert in

the series with a per-

formance from Linda

Lee and the Fox Creek

Band. Concerts are

held every Monday

night from 6:30 to

8:30 p.m. down at the

St. Johnsville Marina.

by Elizabeth A. TomlinMaybe you have

noticed a strange

flower appearing in

your garden lately.

Not the kind that

grew there, but one

that was “planted”

there by a member of

the Canajoharie-Fort

Plain Garden Club,

recognizing your

efforts to beautify the

community in which

you live.

According to Club

President, Linda

Klump, “We drive

around and notice spe-

cial gardens in the

area and then we place

these flowers in those

gardens.”

Klump and Club

Secretary Marge

DeBlock showed an

example of the flowers

the members have

been distributing in

surrounding commu-

nities. “We cover an

area of about a 30

mile radius, including

St. Johnsville, Fort

Plain, Canajoharie,

Nelliston, and Palatine

Bridge,” Klump said.

The officers of the

Club credit Program

Director Carol Gould

with coming up with

the idea. “We buy the

flowers and write our

message on them, and

place them in gardens

to show our apprecia-

tion of other garden-

ers,” Gould said.

“We want to

acknowledge, recog-

nize and encourage

other gardeners,”

remarked Reverend

Plank.

“It’s the Garden

Club’s way of saying

thank you!” Gould

affirmed.

The Club has

recently been recog-

nized for their contri-

bution to the World

Gardening project.

“For the past two

years we have support-

ed the project ‘Water

for Sudan’,” reported

Reverend Plank. “The

money goes to help

build wells in the vil-

lages in southern

Sudan.”

According to Klump,

the Canajoharie-Fort

Plain Garden Club has

made the highest

donation in their dis-

trict for the project.

The Canajoharie-

Fort Plain Garden Club

was established in

1934 and is a regis-

tered member of

National Garden

Clubs’ Federated

Garden Clubs of NYS,

Inc., Fifth District.

Twenty-two registered

clubs make up district

5, with Agnes Rodd as

Director.

The Canajoharie-

Fort Plain Club has

about 25 active mem-

bers. “We’re small, but

we’re active!” Klump

reported.

They will be joining

with the Kingsboro

Garden Club, of

Amsterdam, to spon-

sor the district’s

‘Second Standard

Flower Show’ at the

County Fair in Fonda,

Aug. 27- Sept. 2.

The Garden Club is

always looking for new

members. Interested?

Scientific evidencewould have you believethat only human beingsare capable of complexfeelings that includelove and hate. However, talk to any dog or catowner and chances arethey’ll say that they lovetheir pets and receiveequal love in return.

Distinctive areas of thebrain light up on MRIswhen humans areshown someone theylove. Researchers at Al-bert Einstein College ofMedicine saw the cau-date area of the brain —which is involved incravings — become veryactive when study par-ticipants were shown animage of their significantother. Another area thatlit up was the ventraltegmental, which pro-duces dopamine, a pow-erful neurotransmitterthat affects pleasure andmotivation. Whether thesame occurs in pets isdebatable.

Although dogs andcats rely on their humanowners to provide muchof their necessities, fromfood to water to a safeplace to live, their moti-vation toward affectiondoes not seem linked tosecurity alone. Catshave been known totravel hundreds of milesto find a prior ownerwho moved. Or if the cathas run off, he can gen-erally find his way back.Dogs, similarly, havebeen shown to mournthe loss of a loved oneafter he or she has died, sitting outside of theroom whimpering. Bothdogs and cats have beendocumented as takingthe proverbial bullet fortheir owners, attemptingto save them when own-ers are injured or at-tacked. Cats have evenbeen known to lick awaytears.

However, experts stilldebate whether or notpets can feel love. Re-searchers at Penn Statehave offered that dogsand cats probably don’tfeel love in the same waythat humans do. Howev-er, they’ve learned thatby putting out cues thatseem like love and affec-tion to people, theystand to gain more —treats, food, pats on theback. Dogs and catsmay “love" us based onthe reward of their be-haviors. If people no

longer supplied re-wards, the love wouldwane. One could saythat it’s ironic thatPavlov was able to trainhis dog to salivate as aconditioned reflex to abell. For it seems peoplehave been conditionedto reward dogs and cats

for the supposed “love”they are showing theirowners.

Still, others have saidthere may be some basisto the concept that petsfeel deep emotions. JaneGoodall’s research intoprimates gives evidencethat animals actually do

have emotions. “From abehavioral perspective,it only makes sense thatanimals would experi-ence emotions,” she hasnoted. Goodall’s re-search suggests that so-cial animals must beable to read other ani-mals in their society and

must be able to main-tain social bonds, muchin the way pets form asocial bond with theirhumans.

The jury may continueto be out regardingwhether puppy dog eyesor purring symbolizeslove or our pet compan-

ions are just looking tosecure their place in acomfortable environ-ment. However, there isno harm done when petowners lavish affectionon their pets, especiallyif that companionshipbrings everyone involvedjoy.

Pets are an important part of our lives. Let our Pet Owners know what products or services youoffer. Take advantage of the coverage area of our regional and local papers.
